For Saint-Tropez, Marseille Airport offers a western approach that avoids the congested eastern Riviera roads during peak summer.

Airport Layout and Terminals

Marseille Provence Airport operates two terminals. Terminal MP1 handles the majority of flights, including Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, and most full-service carriers. Terminal MP2 serves primarily low-cost carriers including easyJet and Ryanair. The terminals are separate buildings connected by a shuttle bus. Confirm your terminal when booking to ensure your driver is at the correct location.

Marseille Airport for Provence Destinations

Marseille Airport's greatest strength is its proximity to Provence's most celebrated destinations. Aix-en-Provence, the elegant city of fountains and Cézanne, is just 30 kilometers away (30 minutes). The transfer is one of the shortest from any major French airport to a significant destination, making MRS the obvious choice for Aix visitors.

Cassis, the stunning calanques village east of Marseille, is 45 kilometers from the airport (40 minutes). The Calanques National Park, with its dramatic limestone cliffs and turquoise coves, is one of France's most spectacular natural areas and is best accessed from Cassis. Toulon, the major naval port and gateway to the Var coast, is 65 kilometers (50 minutes).

Marseille city center itself is 25 kilometers from the airport (25-30 minutes). The Vieux-Port, the MuCEM museum, the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, and the vibrant Noailles market are all within easy reach. Marseille is France's second-largest city and one of its most culturally diverse and dynamic — a destination in its own right rather than merely a transit point.

Marseille Airport for the French Riviera

For western Riviera destinations, Marseille Airport offers a viable alternative to Nice. Saint-Tropez is 130 kilometers from MRS (1h 30min off-peak), approaching from the west via the A8 and D98. This western approach avoids the congested eastern Riviera roads and can be faster than the Nice approach during peak summer, particularly on Saturday changeover days.

Cannes is 165 kilometers from Marseille Airport (1h 45min), Nice is 200 kilometers (2h 10min), and Monaco is 230 kilometers (2h 30min). For these eastern Riviera destinations, Nice Airport is generally more convenient. However, if your flight options are better from Marseille, or if you're combining a Provence visit with Riviera time, MRS provides perfectly adequate access.

Seasonal Patterns and Peak Times

Marseille Airport experiences peak demand during summer (July-August) when Provence and the Riviera attract maximum visitors. The airport also sees elevated traffic during school holidays (February, April, October) and major events. Unlike Nice Airport, which is dominated by ski season traffic in winter, Marseille has a more balanced year-round pattern reflecting Provence's appeal across all seasons.

Saturday transfers during summer can be affected by the same changeover traffic that affects all Riviera airports. For Saint-Tropez transfers in particular, morning arrivals (before 10 AM) are strongly recommended during July and August to avoid peninsula congestion.

Ground Transportation and Connections

The airport shuttle bus (Navette Aéroport) connects Marseille Airport to Marseille Saint-Charles train station in 25 minutes, running every 15-20 minutes. From Saint-Charles, TGV trains connect to Paris (3 hours), Lyon (1h 40min), and other major French cities. The train is excellent for travelers heading to Marseille or connecting to the national rail network.

For Riviera destinations, private transfers are the most practical option. The train network from Marseille to Riviera destinations requires changes and is slow compared to direct road transfers. Car rental is available at the airport but involves driving unfamiliar roads in potentially heavy summer traffic.
