Gatwick to London by car: when it beats the train
Gatwick is London's second airport, 45 km south of the city in West Sussex. Getting from Gatwick to London by private car takes about 1 hour 5 minutes outside the rush hours, and up to 1 hour 45 minutes on weekday mornings and evenings. Your driver meets you in arrivals at Gatwick Airport, helps with the bags and drives you to the door.
The train is the fastest way into the city: the Gatwick Express reaches Victoria in about half an hour. The car wins when your final address is not next to a station, when you have more luggage than you want to carry through Victoria at rush hour, when there are three or four of you sharing one price, or when you land after the trains have thinned out.

The drive from LGW to Central London
Gatwick connects directly to junction 9 of the M23 motorway. Your driver heads north on the M23, which becomes the A23 near Hooley, and follows the old London to Brighton road through Coulsdon, Purley, Streatham and Brixton to Vauxhall and across the Thames into Westminster or the City. For Kensington, Chelsea and Mayfair, the driver may take the M25 and A3 instead, which is longer but often quicker.
The M23 is the easy part; the A23 through south London is where time goes. Expect about 1 hour 5 minutes outside peak times and up to 1 hour 45 minutes between 7am and 9am or 4pm and 6pm on weekdays. Roadworks on the A23 at Streatham Hill continue into late November 2026.
There are no tolls on the main route. If your address is inside the central London Congestion Charge zone, the charge is included in your fixed price, as are Gatwick's pickup charges. Canary Wharf and Docklands are reached through the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnels, which charge a toll between 6am and 10pm.

Meeting your driver at Gatwick
Gatwick has two terminals, North and South, linked by a free shuttle that takes about two minutes. After baggage reclaim and customs, go into the arrivals hall of your terminal, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. Gatwick asks private hire cars to collect passengers from the short-stay car parks, so the driver then walks you a few minutes to the car.
Gatwick has two terminals: easyJet, Emirates and Qatar Airways use the North Terminal, while British Airways, Ryanair, Jet2 and many others use the South. A free shuttle links them in about two minutes. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal with a sign showing your name, then walks you to the car in the short-stay car park, where Gatwick asks private hire cars to collect passengers.
We track your flight and move the pickup to match any delay at no extra cost, with 60 minutes of free waiting from the actual landing. For the trip back to Gatwick, your driver collects you from your door and waits up to 15 minutes.

Where we drop off in London
Every London address is door to door. Hotels on busy streets often have a lay-by or a doorman; for houses and apartments, the driver stops as close to the door as the street allows while your bags come out.
Westminster and Victoria
The closest part of central London to Gatwick by road, straight up the A23 and over the river.
Mayfair, Marylebone and Knightsbridge
West End hotels and residences, via Park Lane or the A3 depending on traffic.
Kensington and Chelsea
Hotels and houses in South Kensington, Chelsea and Notting Hill, often via the M25 and A3.
The City and Shoreditch
Offices and hotels around Bank, St Paul’s and Liverpool Street, across London Bridge or Blackfriars.
King's Cross and St Pancras
For Eurostar and trains to the north and Scotland, timed to your departure.

When to book your Central London transfer
London traffic is heavy all year, so the time of day matters more than the season. Weekday mornings and late afternoons are the slowest; Sundays and the middle of the day are the quickest.
Some events add their own delays. The London Marathon in April closes roads across the centre; in 2027 it runs over two days, on 24 and 25 April. The Chelsea Flower Show (18 to 22 May 2027) and Wimbledon (28 June to 11 July 2027) fill hotels in west and south-west London.
Gatwick's busiest weeks are the school holidays, especially late July and August, when arrivals halls are crowded and passport queues can be long. Your 60 minutes of free waiting start from the moment you land, not when you clear passport control.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Central London
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 1h 5min – 1h 45min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Gatwick Express | About 30 minutes to Victoria | Non-stop to London Victoria, twice an hour. The quickest way into the centre, but you continue by Tube or taxi from Victoria with your bags. |
| Thameslink and Southern | 30–45 minutes to a London station | Frequent trains to London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon and St Pancras, or to Victoria. Good if your hotel is near one of those stations. |
| National Express coach | 1 hour 5 minutes or more | Up to 21 coaches a day to Victoria Coach Station, from both terminals. Cheap, slow in traffic. |
| Rental car | 1–1¾ hours plus parking | The A23 is busy, central London parking is scarce and costly, and driving into the centre in charging hours means paying the Congestion Charge. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Central London transfer suits
Families with luggage
No carrying cases through Victoria or onto the Tube. Child seats fitted before pickup, and a minivan seats up to seven.
Business travellers
A driver waiting at arrivals and a quiet car to take calls, with drop-off at the office or hotel door rather than a station.
Hotels away from the railway
For Kensington, Chelsea, Marylebone or Notting Hill, the car saves a train and a taxi or Tube ride.
Late and early flights
Trains thin out late at night. A booked car is waiting however late you land, and collects you for dawn departures.
Plan the rest of your London trip
- If you land early, most London hotels will hold your bags until check-in, usually from 2pm or 3pm. Ask to be dropped there first.
- An Oyster card or contactless bank card works on the Tube, buses and trains. Use the same card each time to benefit from daily fare capping.
- Booking the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey or a West End show? Buy tickets online in advance; walk-up queues are long in summer.
- Catching a cruise from Southampton after London? We run Heathrow to Southampton transfers and quote from London hotels too.
- Continuing to Scotland? We meet flights at Edinburgh for transfers such as Edinburgh to St Andrews.
- For your flight home from Gatwick, leave central London about three hours before a European departure, and allow more on weekday afternoons.
