Positano tumbles down a cliff into the Tyrrhenian Sea, a vertical village of pastel houses, lemon terraces and steep staircases. It is also one of the hardest places in Italy to reach with luggage: 62 km from Naples Airport, with the last stretch on the Amalfi Drive, one of the most famous and most demanding coast roads in the world.

The drive from NAP to Positano
From the airport, your driver joins the A3 motorway heading south-east around Vesuvius to Castellammare di Stabia. There the road becomes the SS145, running along the Sorrento coast through Vico Equense and Meta, before climbing across the peninsula at the Colli di San Pietro, where the Amalfi Drive (SS163) begins. The first view of Positano, from the road above the village, is one most people remember.
The Amalfi Drive is narrow, with sharp bends, sheer drops and buses squeezing past in the other direction. Local drivers handle it every day; it isn't a road to learn after a long flight. In normal conditions the transfer takes 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. In July and August, traffic around Sorrento and on the coast road can add 15 to 30 minutes, especially around midday.
Meeting your driver at Naples Airport
Naples Airport has one passenger terminal, with arrivals on the ground floor. After baggage reclaim, walk out into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. The car is parked a short walk from the terminal exit.

Positano's hotels are reached from one one-way road that loops down through the village, Viale Pasitea on the way down and Via Cristoforo Colombo on the way up, and some are only reachable on foot from there. Tell us your hotel and we'll stop at its entrance or the nearest point. Many Positano hotels send a porter for luggage.

When to book your Positano transfer
Positano's season runs from Easter to October, busiest from June to September. In high season the Amalfi Drive can be slow around midday, and many hotels ask for your arrival time in advance. Early-afternoon arrivals face the heaviest traffic; morning and evening arrivals are quicker.
On busy days the coast runs an odd-even number-plate scheme for private cars; licensed chauffeur vehicles like ours are not affected. From November to March many Positano hotels close for the winter, so check your hotel's dates before you book.

Local tips for your Positano transfer
- Pack light, or at least in bags you can carry up steps. Even with a porter, Positano is a village of staircases.
- Tell us your hotel so we can plan the drop-off: some are at the door, others a short walk down.
- Book dinner for your first night before you arrive. Positano restaurants fill up fast in summer.
- For your flight home, leave Positano about three and a half hours before a European departure from Naples, and four hours before a long-haul one. Add time in August.
