Budapest Airport to city centre: bus, taxi or private car
Budapest's Ferenc Liszt International Airport has no rail link, so the trip from Budapest Airport to city centre hotels is by road whichever way you go. The 100E airport bus is the public option: it runs around the clock to Kálvin tér and Deák Ferenc tér in about 40 minutes, and for a solo traveller staying near those stops it is a sensible choice.
A private car covers the 20 km to central Pest in about 30 minutes. Your driver meets you in arrivals at Budapest Airport, loads your bags and drives to your hotel door, including hotels across the river in Buda, which the bus does not reach. The price is fixed for the whole vehicle, so families and groups share one fare.
The car is also the easier choice for the Castle District, where vehicle access is restricted, for late arrivals, and for anyone travelling on to Lake Balaton or Vienna. For more of the country, see our Hungary transfers.

The drive from BUD to Budapest centre
From the terminal, your driver joins the airport expressway, which runs north-west through the outer districts of Pest. Near the Kőbánya-Kispest transport hub it becomes Üllői út, one of the city's great radial avenues, and runs straight into the centre: past the Népliget park, the Semmelweis University clinics and the Corvin quarter, to Kálvin tér and the Hungarian National Museum on the Kiskörút, the inner ring road. From there it is a few minutes to Deák Ferenc tér and the Danube.
The drive takes about 30 minutes in normal traffic. Üllői út is busy on weekday mornings and late afternoons, when the trip can take 50 minutes, and the Kiskörút and Danube embankments are slow in the evening rush. Early mornings, late evenings and Sundays are quickest. Any motorway or expressway tolls are included in your fixed price.
For Buda, the driver crosses on the Elisabeth, Liberty or Margaret Bridge. The Chain Bridge has been closed to private cars since its 2023 renovation and now carries buses, taxis, bicycles and pedestrians, so it is rarely the way in.
The walled Castle District on the hill above the river is closed to general traffic, and vehicles need a permit to enter. In Pest, Váci utca and several streets around it are pedestrian. If you are staying in either, tell us the hotel when you book and we will plan the closest legal stop.

Meeting your driver at Budapest Airport
Budapest Airport's Terminal 2 has two halves with separate arrivals halls: 2A for flights from Schengen countries and 2B for flights from outside Schengen. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the car in the pick-up area outside.
Budapest Airport has one terminal building in two halves: Terminal 2A for flights from Schengen countries and Terminal 2B for flights from outside Schengen, including the UK, Ireland, Turkey and North America. Each has its own arrivals hall and exit. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal with a sign showing your name, then walks you to the car in the pick-up area outside.
We track your flight, so your pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. Arrivals at 2B pass passport control first, and the waiting time covers that.
For the return, your driver collects you from your hotel and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. For the Castle District, we agree the pickup point in advance.

Where we drop off in Budapest
Every address in Budapest is door to door, on both sides of the Danube. Váci utca and parts of the inner Pest centre are pedestrian, and the Castle District needs a permit, so for hotels there the driver uses the nearest permitted stop. Tell us your hotel or apartment and we will plan the approach.
Belváros and the Danube Promenade
Hotels around Vörösmarty tér, Váci utca and the riverside facing the Castle. Váci utca is pedestrian, so some hotels are a short walk from the car.
Parliament and Lipótváros
Hotels near the Parliament, St Stephen’s Basilica and the Pest end of the Chain Bridge, about 30 minutes from the airport in normal traffic.
Andrássy út and the Jewish Quarter
Boutique hotels and apartments along Andrássy út, around the Opera House and in the lanes of the old Jewish Quarter in districts VI and VII.
Buda Castle District
Hotels inside the castle walls, up the hill from the Danube. Entry is by permit only, so tell us the hotel and we plan the stop around the access rules.
Buda riverside and Gellért Hill
Hotels below the Castle and around Gellért Hill, reached over the Elisabeth or Liberty Bridge, about 30 to 40 minutes from the airport.

When to book your Budapest centre transfer
Budapest is busy from spring to autumn and again in December. The Christmas fair on Vörösmarty tér usually opens in mid-November and runs to the end of December, with another market in front of St Stephen's Basilica. St Stephen's Day on 20 August is Hungary's national holiday, with fireworks over the Danube in the evening and road closures along both embankments, so aim to arrive earlier in the day.
The Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring, about 35 minutes from the airport, is usually held in late July; the 2027 date has not been published yet. The Sziget music festival takes over Óbuda Island in mid-August. Both fill the city's hotels, so book your transfer when you book your room.
Summer days are often hot, and winters cold, with fog that can delay flights. We track your flight, so your pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Budapest centre
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 30–50 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| 100E airport bus | About 40 minutes + walk | Runs 24 hours a day from the stop between the two terminals to Kálvin tér and Deák Ferenc tér, every few minutes in the daytime. Needs its own airport ticket; you then walk or take the metro to your hotel. |
| Bus 200E + metro M3 | 50–60 minutes | Bus 200E to Kőbánya-Kispest, then metro line M3 into the centre. The lowest-cost route on a standard ticket, with one change and a long ride with heavy luggage. |
| Airport taxi | 30–50 minutes | The airport’s contracted taxi company has ranks outside Terminals 2A and 2B. You order at the rank on arrival and pay the meter, which rises in traffic. |
| miniBUD shared shuttle | Varies with the other stops | The official shared shuttle drops several passengers in turn, so your journey time depends on the other addresses. It can suit solo travellers with time to spare. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Budapest centre transfer suits
Weekend city breaks
Land on a Friday evening and be at your hotel in Pest within the hour, with no ticket machine or metro change. Useful on a short stay where every hour counts.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup and pushchairs in the boot. One price for the car, and no bus stop to find with tired children after a late flight.
Danube river cruise passengers
Many river cruises start or end in Budapest, moored along the Danube embankments. Tell us the ship and berth, and we drop you as near the gangway as the road allows.
Grand Prix and festival visitors
The Hungaroring is about 35 minutes from the airport. In Grand Prix week and during Sziget the city fills up, so a car booked ahead takes one thing off the list.
Plan the rest of your Budapest stay
- The thermal baths, such as Széchenyi and Rudas, are busiest at weekends and on summer afternoons. Buy tickets online where you can, and go early.
- Hungary uses the forint, not the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, from cafés to the airport bus, so you need little cash on arrival.
- Book a Parliament tour online before you travel. English-language slots fill up in summer and around public holidays, and the building is floodlit after dark.
- Walk up to the Castle District or take bus 16 from Deák Ferenc tér, rather than trying to drive in. Fisherman’s Bastion is quietest early in the morning.
- Travelling on to another capital? Vienna is about three hours away by road. See our Vienna Airport to city centre route and the Prague Old Town transfer.
- For your flight home, leave central Budapest about two and a half hours before a European departure and three hours before a long-haul one, adding time on weekday afternoons for Üllői út.
