Newark to Manhattan by private car: what to expect
Newark Liberty is in New Jersey, but for the West Side and Lower Manhattan it is often a shorter drive than JFK. The drive from Newark to Manhattan is about 26 km (16 miles) to Times Square. Your driver meets you at Newark Airport, loads the bags once and takes you through the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel to the door of your hotel, office or apartment, in about 40 minutes when the roads are clear.
The train is a genuine alternative, and we will say so. AirTrain and NJ Transit reach New York Penn Station in about half an hour from the airport station, and for one person with a carry-on staying near Penn Station it is hard to beat.
A private car makes more sense with suitcases, children or a late landing, or when your address is far from Penn Station: Tribeca, the Financial District, the Upper East Side. The price is for the whole vehicle, so three or four people share it. Landing at JFK instead? See JFK to Manhattan.

The drive from EWR to Manhattan
Leaving the terminal loop, your driver heads north on Routes 1&9 or the New Jersey Turnpike, and the tunnel depends on where you are staying.
For Midtown and the Upper West and East Sides, the usual line runs over the Pulaski Skyway into Jersey City, north through Union City and down the long helix in Weehawken to the Lincoln Tunnel, with the Midtown skyline straight ahead across the Hudson. You come up on the West Side near 42nd Street. That is the route on the diagram: about 26 km to Times Square.
For Tribeca, SoHo, the West Village and the Financial District, the Holland Tunnel is more direct. It comes out near Canal Street, about 22 km from the airport, and is often the quickest drive from Newark to any part of Manhattan.
Both tunnels charge a toll only on the way into New York, and tolling is cashless. Both also lead straight into Manhattan's Congestion Relief Zone, which covers everything south of and including 60th Street. The tunnel toll, Turnpike tolls and the congestion charge are all included in your fixed price.
Traffic decides the time, not distance. Late at night or early on a weekend morning, Midtown is 35 to 40 minutes away. On weekday mornings, and from mid-afternoon into the evening, queues build on the approaches to both tunnels and the trip can stretch to 75 or 80 minutes. Your driver checks traffic as you land and chooses the tunnel and approach that are moving.

Meeting your driver at Newark Airport
Newark has three terminals, A, B and C, linked by the AirTrain; Terminal A is a short walk or shuttle ride from its AirTrain station. International passengers clear US customs before the arrivals hall. The Port Authority directs passengers with a pre-booked car to the ground transportation pickup area in each terminal, and your driver meets you there or at baggage claim with a name sign. We send the exact spot and your driver's phone number before you land.
Newark has three terminals. Terminal C is United's main terminal, Terminal B handles most international airlines, and the newer Terminal A serves Air Canada, American, Delta, JetBlue and United domestic flights. International passengers clear US customs before reaching the arrivals hall.
The Port Authority sends passengers with a pre-booked car to the ground transportation pickup area in each terminal. Your driver meets you there or at baggage claim with a name sign, and we send the exact spot and the driver's phone number before you land. Ignore anyone in the hall offering rides: the airport warns against unofficial drivers.
We track your flight and give you 60 minutes of free waiting from the actual landing time. For the trip back to Newark, your driver waits up to 15 minutes at your address.

Where we drop off in Manhattan
We drive to any Manhattan address, plus Brooklyn, Queens and the cruise terminals. Give us the full address, the cross street and the building entrance. Many Midtown streets have no stopping space at busy times, so your driver stops at the nearest legal kerb, a few steps from the door, if the front of the building is blocked.
Midtown West, Times Square and Hudson Yards
Closest to the Lincoln Tunnel exit, so usually the quickest drop-offs from Newark. Theatre District hotels, Penn Station and the Javits Center are a few blocks away.
Midtown East and Grand Central
Across town from the tunnel, so allow 10 to 20 extra minutes at busy times. In September, UN General Assembly week closes streets near the UN.
Upper West Side and Upper East Side
Above 60th Street, outside the congestion zone. The West Side is a straight run north; the East Side means crossing Central Park on one of the transverse roads.
Tribeca, SoHo, the Village and the Financial District
Reached through the Holland Tunnel, which surfaces near Canal Street. At about 22 km, this is often the quickest part of Manhattan to reach from Newark.
Manhattan Cruise Terminal
The Hudson River piers on 12th Avenue in the West 40s and 50s, a few minutes north of the Lincoln Tunnel exit. Tell us your ship and sailing time.

When to book your Manhattan transfer
New York is busy all year, but some dates slow the roads more than others. The TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday 1 November 2026 closes First Avenue, Fifth Avenue and the Central Park drives for much of the day. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday 26 November 2026 closes Central Park West and Sixth Avenue in the morning, and the Rockefeller Center tree is lit on Wednesday 2 December 2026, when the streets around 50th Street fill in the evening.
From then until New Year, Midtown traffic is at its slowest, so allow extra time for departures. On 31 December, expect closures around Times Square from the afternoon. In September, UN General Assembly week brings closures to Midtown East.
In summer, afternoon thunderstorms often hold up flights into the New York airports. We track your flight, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your free waiting time starts when you actually land.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Manhattan
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 40 min – 1h 20min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| AirTrain + NJ Transit train | About 1 hour to Penn Station | AirTrain to the airport station (Terminal A needs a walk or shuttle bus first), then NJ Transit to New York Penn Station in about 30 minutes. One change, then a taxi or subway with your bags. |
| Newark Airport Express bus | About 50 minutes + onward trip | A coach from every terminal to Grand Central, Bryant Park and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Bags go underneath, and you continue from the stop by taxi or subway. |
| Taxi from the rank | 40–80 minutes | Zone-based fares to Manhattan from the dispatcher at each terminal, but tolls, the congestion charge, a per-bag fee and a rush-hour surcharge are added on top. Four passengers at most. |
| Ride apps | 40–80 minutes | Pickup zones across the road at Terminal A, on the frontage at Terminal B and on floor 3 of the Terminal C garage. Prices rise with demand, which peaks when flights land together. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Manhattan transfer suits
Families with luggage
Child seats fitted before pickup, and no AirTrain, train platform or subway stairs with suitcases. A minivan takes up to seven people and their bags, for one price.
Evening and late arrivals
Landing after dark, tired, with a customs queue still ahead? Your driver tracks the flight and waits, and late at night the run to Midtown can take as little as 35 minutes.
Business travellers
A quiet car straight to an office in the Financial District or Midtown, with the tunnel toll and congestion charge already settled, so nothing is added at the end.
Cruise passengers
Sailing from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal on the Hudson, or from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, about 15 km from the airport? Tell us the ship and we time the drop-off.
Plan the rest of your New York trip
- Check your terminal before you fly. United uses all three terminals at Newark, so the terminal on your booking, not just the airline, tells your driver where to wait.
- Staying in a building with a doorman, a separate residents’ entrance or a loading bay? Add it to your booking notes with the cross street, and your driver stops at the right door.
- Book timed tickets before you land for the sights that sell out on busy days, such as the Statue of Liberty ferries and the observation decks in Midtown and Lower Manhattan.
- Taking the train instead? Make sure you ride to New York Penn Station, not Newark Penn Station, which is one stop from the airport and still in New Jersey.
- For your flight home from Newark, leave Midtown about three hours before an international departure and two and a half before a domestic one. Add time on weekday afternoons, when the tunnels queue in both directions.
- Spending summer weekends on Long Island? We also run JFK to the Hamptons, and can quote the same trip from your Manhattan hotel.
- Heading south after New York? Our Miami Airport to Miami Beach transfer works the same way: one fixed price and a driver waiting when you land.
