Pearson Airport to downtown Toronto by car: what to expect
Toronto Pearson is in Mississauga, north-west of the city, and the drive from Pearson Airport to downtown Toronto is about 27 km to Union Station and the Financial District. Your driver meets you at Toronto Pearson, loads the bags and takes Highway 427 and the Gardiner Expressway along the lakeshore to your door, in about 30 minutes when the roads are clear.
Toronto has a fast airport train, and it deserves a fair hearing. The UP Express leaves Terminal 1 every 15 minutes and reaches Union Station in 28 minutes, whatever the traffic. If your hotel is close to Union and you are travelling light, it is hard to beat.
A private car is the easier choice with heavy bags, children or a snowy evening, for a hotel in Yorkville, King West or the Distillery District, or after the last train, which leaves just before 1am. The price is for the whole vehicle, so a family or a group shares it. See all our transfers in Canada.

The drive from YYZ to Downtown Toronto
From Terminal 1, your driver follows the airport roads to Dixon Road and Highway 27, then joins Highway 427 southbound through Etobicoke; Terminal 3 adds a few minutes. The 427 has express and collector lanes, and drivers use whichever is moving. At the lake it meets the Gardiner Expressway, which runs east along the shore past Humber Bay, the mouth of the Humber River and Exhibition Place into downtown, with the CN Tower ahead. That is the line on the diagram: about 27 km to Front Street.
For Yorkville and the Annex, your driver may take Highway 409 and Highway 401 instead and come down through the city streets, about 25 km.
There are no tolls on either route. Highway 407, the electronic toll road north of the city, only comes into play for some trips to the outer suburbs or Niagara, and its tolls are then included.
The City of Toronto is rebuilding the Gardiner in stages. The section from Dufferin Street to Strachan Avenue was completed in 2026, and work on the stretch from Highway 427 to the Humber River, starting with bridge repairs, is now under way, so expect lane restrictions there. When the Gardiner backs up, Lake Shore Boulevard and the Queensway are the alternatives.
Weekday morning and late-afternoon rush hours are the slowest times, when the trip can take an hour. Late evenings and weekend mornings are quickest, often under 30 minutes. In winter, heavy snow slows every road; the highways are ploughed early, and your driver allows extra time.

Meeting your driver at Toronto Pearson
Pearson has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, linked by the free Terminal Link train, which runs around the clock. International passengers, including those from the US, clear Canadian border control and collect their bags before reaching the arrivals hall. Your driver waits there with a sign showing your name and walks you to the car. Only airport-licensed and pre-arranged vehicles may collect passengers, so ignore anyone offering rides.
Pearson has two terminals. Terminal 1 is used by Air Canada and its Star Alliance partners, plus airlines such as Emirates and Etihad; Terminal 3 by WestJet, Porter, Air Transat, Flair and most Oneworld and SkyTeam airlines. International passengers, including those from the US, clear Canadian border control and collect their bags before the arrivals hall. A free Terminal Link train runs around the clock between the two terminals.

Where we drop off in downtown Toronto
We drive to any address in the city. Downtown hotels usually have a lay-by or a short driveway, condo towers often have a separate visitor entrance, and some streets have streetcar tracks or bike lanes where a car cannot stop. Give us the building name and the entrance you want, and your driver uses the nearest legal spot.
Financial District and Union Station
Hotels and offices around Front, Bay and King streets, linked underground by the PATH walkway. The Fairmont Royal York and Union Station are about 27 km from Pearson.
Entertainment District and King West
Theatres, the CN Tower, Rogers Centre and the restaurants of King Street West. Streetcars have priority on King, so drop-offs are often on a side street.
Yorkville and the Annex
Luxury hotels and boutiques around Bloor Street, north of the core. Often quicker via Highway 401 than the Gardiner, about 25 km from the airport.
Harbourfront and Queens Quay
Lakefront hotels and condos, the ferry docks for the Toronto Islands, and the mainland terminal for Billy Bishop Airport at the foot of Bathurst Street.
Distillery District and St. Lawrence
The cobbled lanes of the old distillery, St. Lawrence Market and the east end of downtown, about 29 km from Pearson along the Gardiner.

When to book your Downtown Toronto transfer
Toronto is busy all year, with a few dates worth planning around. The 122nd Santa Claus Parade runs through the city on Sunday 22 November 2026 and closes downtown streets for much of the day. December brings holiday markets, shows and shopping, and downtown traffic stays heavy into the evenings until Christmas.
Winter is the season to allow extra time. Pearson typically gets more than a metre of snow over a winter, flights can wait for de-icing, and a storm can slow the highways. We track your flight, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost.
Summer is festival season, with the Toronto Caribbean Carnival and the Canadian National Exhibition at Exhibition Place in August, then the Toronto International Film Festival in September, when Entertainment District hotels fill and parts of King Street can close for events.
Weekday rush hours on the 427 and the Gardiner are slow in every season. If you can choose your flight, a mid-morning, early-afternoon or evening landing gives the quickest drive.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Downtown Toronto
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 30 min – 1h | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| UP Express train | 28 minutes to Union + onward trip | Every 15 minutes from the station at Terminal 1, from 5:27 on weekdays until 00:54; Terminal 3 passengers take the free Terminal Link train first. Fast and traffic-proof, then a walk or taxi from Union. |
| TTC 900 Airport Express bus + subway | 1 hour or more | Bus from the airport to Kipling station, then Line 2 of the subway east into the city. The lowest fare, but two vehicles, a change and subway stairs with your luggage. |
| Airport taxi or limo | 30–60 minutes | Airport-licensed cabs and limos from the stands outside both terminals, charging airport-authorised flat rates. You queue at the stand rather than being met inside the terminal. |
| Ride apps | 30–60 minutes | Marked pickup zones at both terminals: ground level at Terminal 1 and the arrivals level at Terminal 3. Prices rise with demand, often when several long-haul flights land together. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Downtown Toronto transfer suits
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup, and no train platform or subway stairs with strollers and suitcases. A minivan takes up to seven people and their bags, for one price.
Business travellers
Straight to an office in the Financial District or a conference at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, with your driver’s name and number in hand before you land.
Winter arrivals
A warm car at the arrivals door instead of a cold walk from the train in January. Your driver tracks de-icing delays and adjusts the pickup at no extra cost.
Late-night flights
The last UP Express leaves Pearson just before 1am. A booked car meets flights at any hour and takes you straight to the door, with no taxi queue.
Plan the rest of your Toronto trip
- Check your entry documents before you fly. Most visa-exempt visitors arriving by air need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for Canada; US citizens do not.
- Tell us your airline and terminal. Air Canada and WestJet use different terminals at Pearson, a train ride apart, so the terminal decides where your driver waits.
- Staying in a condo rental? Add the building’s visitor entrance and any concierge instructions to your booking notes, as many towers have separate residential and hotel doors.
- For your flight home from Pearson, leave downtown about three hours before an international or US flight and two and a half before a domestic one. US flights clear US preclearance at Pearson, which takes extra time.
- Visiting Niagara Falls? It is about 124 km from Pearson, roughly 1½ to 2 hours by car. We quote day trips and direct transfers from the airport or your hotel.
- Heading west after Toronto for the mountains? Our Vancouver Airport to Whistler transfer runs on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, with room for skis and boards.
- Going on to New York? See our Newark to Manhattan car service, with the tunnel toll and congestion charge already in the price.
