Vienna Airport to city centre: car, CAT or train?
Vienna Airport sits at Schwechat, 20 km south-east of the centre by road, and the trip from Vienna Airport to city centre hotels is normally one of the easiest in Europe: the City Airport Train (CAT) reaches Wien Mitte non-stop in 16 minutes. Until the end of October 2027, though, the S-Bahn line through the city is closed for rebuilding. The CAT runs as a bus to Wien Mitte, the S7 stops short at St. Marx, and only the long-distance trains still run direct, to the Hauptbahnhof.
That makes a private car a closer call than usual. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Vienna Airport and takes about 25 minutes to a hotel on the Ring or inside it, door to door, for one fixed price for the car however many of you there are.
For a solo traveller staying near Wien Mitte or the Hauptbahnhof, the CAT bus or the Railjet is still simple. For families, groups, heavy luggage and hotels in the lanes of the 1st district, the car saves a change at the station. Planning more of the country? See our Austria transfers.

The drive from VIE to Vienna centre
From the airport, your driver joins the A4 Ost Autobahn and heads west past the refinery at Schwechat and the outskirts of Simmering. Close to the city the A4 crosses the A23 Südosttangente, the busiest stretch of road in Austria, and ends at Erdberg in the 3rd district.
From Erdberg the driver comes in along Schlachthausgasse and Rennweg, past the gardens of the Belvedere, to Schwarzenbergplatz and the Ringstrasse, the boulevard of palaces, museums, the Parliament and the State Opera that circles the old city. For hotels in Leopoldstadt or along the Danube Canal, the driver leaves the motorway near the Prater instead. Austrian motorways need a vignette, which is part of your fixed price.
In normal traffic the drive takes about 25 minutes. Weekday mornings from about 07:00 to 09:00, when commuters from the south and east pour onto the Südosttangente, and late afternoons can stretch it to 40. Late at night, when the airport buses and trains thin out, the road is usually clear.
Inside the Ring, the 1st district (Innere Stadt) mixes one-way lanes with pedestrian streets, including Kärntner Straße, the Graben and Kohlmarkt. Most hotels there are door to door through the side streets; for the few that face a pedestrian street, the car stops on the nearest street open to traffic, usually a minute's walk away. For the trip back, we suggest a pickup time that allows for the Südosttangente at rush hour.

Meeting your driver at Vienna Airport
Vienna Airport has three terminals, 1, 1A and 3, but all arriving passengers come out into the same arrivals hall on level 0, through the sliding doors from baggage reclaim. Your driver waits there holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the car in the short-stay car park beside the hall.

We track your flight, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. Flights from outside Schengen, including the UK and North America, take longer to clear passport control; the waiting time covers that.
For the return, your driver collects you from your hotel and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. If your hotel faces a pedestrian street, we agree the pickup point in advance.

Where we drop off in Vienna
Every Vienna address is door to door. Inside the Ring, a few hotels sit on pedestrian streets such as Kärntner Straße or the Graben, and there the car stops on the nearest side street. Tell us your hotel when you book and the driver plans the approach through the one-way lanes of the 1st district.
Innere Stadt (1st district)
The old city inside the Ring, around St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg and the Opera. Most hotels are door to door; those on pedestrian streets are a few steps from the car.
The Ringstrasse
Grand hotels on the boulevard itself, from the Opera to Schwarzenbergplatz and the Stubenring. The easiest drop-offs in the city, about 25 minutes from the airport.
Leopoldstadt and the Prater
Hotels across the Danube Canal in the 2nd district, near the Prater park, the giant Ferris wheel and the Messe Wien exhibition centre.
MuseumsQuartier, Naschmarkt and Mariahilf
The districts just west of the Ring, with the MuseumsQuartier, the Naschmarkt and Mariahilfer Straße. Boutique hotels on quieter streets, about 30 minutes away.
Schönbrunn and the Hauptbahnhof
Hotels near Schönbrunn Palace, 30 to 45 minutes from the airport, and around the main station, 20 to 35 minutes, for onward trains to Salzburg, Budapest or Prague.

When to book your Vienna centre transfer
Vienna is a year-round city with two high seasons: summer, and the run-up to Christmas. The Christmas market on Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, with smaller markets at Schönbrunn, the Belvedere and Spittelberg. January and February are ball season, which peaks with the Opera Ball at the State Opera on 4 February 2027, when the streets around the Opera are busy all evening.
The Vienna City Marathon on Sunday 18 April 2027 closes roads across the centre for most of the day, so arrive the day before if you can.
Rail works: from 7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027, the S-Bahn trunk line through Vienna is closed. The CAT runs as a bus, the S7 ends at St. Marx, and new airport bus lines run to Karlsplatz and Praterstern. Expect fuller buses at busy times. We track your flight, so your pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Vienna centre
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 25–40 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| CAT by bus (until October 2027) | 20–40 minutes + onward trip | While the line is closed, the City Airport Train runs as a non-stop bus to Wien Mitte, every 12 to 15 minutes in the daytime. Frequent, but it uses the same roads as a car. |
| Railjet to Wien Hauptbahnhof | 15 minutes + onward trip | Long-distance trains still run direct from the airport station to the Hauptbahnhof, about twice an hour. Fast, but the station is south of the centre, so most hotels need the U-Bahn, a tram or a taxi after. |
| Vienna Airport Bus | 25–45 minutes + walk | Coaches from outside the arrivals hall to Schwedenplatz, Westbahnhof and Donauzentrum, plus new lines to Karlsplatz and Praterstern during the rail works. Simple for light travellers near those stops. |
| S7 + tram (until October 2027) | 40 minutes or more | During the works the S7 runs only as far as Wien St. Marx, where you change to tram 18 or 71. Fine for light travellers, but the slowest route into the centre with luggage. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Vienna centre transfer suits
Families and groups
With the rail line closed until autumn 2027, a car avoids changes and busy replacement buses. Child seats are fitted in advance, and one price covers the whole vehicle.
Business and congress travellers
Straight to the Austria Center, the Messe Wien or an office in the 1st district, in a quiet car with a driver who knows the one-way streets.
Ball and opera guests
Gowns, tailcoats and garment bags travel in the boot, not on your lap on a bus. Book early for Opera Ball week in February.
Travellers going on to Bratislava or Budapest
Bratislava is about an hour from Vienna Airport by road and Budapest about 2½ to 3 hours. We quote the onward leg from the airport or your Vienna hotel.
Plan the rest of your Vienna stay
- Book Schönbrunn Palace tours and Spanish Riding School performances ahead, especially from April to October and in December. Both sell timed tickets online.
- If your hotel is inside the Ring, check whether it is on a pedestrian street. If so, the car stops a few steps away; ask the hotel whether someone can meet you at the car.
- A slow first afternoon suits Vienna. The classic coffee houses, such as Café Central and Café Landtmann, are a short walk from most hotels in the centre.
- Continuing to the Alps? We also drive from Salzburg to Zell am See and from Innsbruck to the Tyrolean resorts, and can quote Vienna to the mountains as one trip.
- Heading to another capital next? See Prague Airport to the Old Town and our Budapest Airport transfer for the other end of your trip.
- For your flight home, leave the centre about two and a half hours before a European departure and three hours before a long-haul one, adding time on weekday mornings.
