Schiphol to Amsterdam: train or private car?
Getting from Schiphol to Amsterdam by train is easy, and we will say so up front: trains leave from the station under Schiphol Plaza several times an hour and reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 17 minutes. If you are travelling light and staying near the station, the train is hard to beat.
A private car earns its place when the station is not where you are going. Many of Amsterdam's hotels sit in the canal ring, the Jordaan, the Museum Quarter or De Pijp, a tram ride or a walk over cobbles and bridges from Centraal. Your driver meets you at Amsterdam Schiphol, loads the cases once and covers the 20 km to the old centre in about 25 minutes, door to door.
The car also suits families with pushchairs, groups of three or more who share one fixed price, anyone landing after the regular trains stop, and travellers heading on to Keukenhof, Haarlem or The Hague. For trips elsewhere in the country, see our Netherlands transfers.

The drive from AMS to Amsterdam centre
Schiphol sits on the drained bed of the old Haarlemmermeer lake, a few metres below sea level. From the terminal, your driver takes the A4 north past Badhoevedorp to the De Nieuwe Meer interchange, where it meets the A10, Amsterdam's ring road. Which way round the ring depends on your hotel.
For the old centre and the hotels around Centraal, the usual line follows the western ring past Sloterdijk and comes into the city along the IJ waterfront, in front of Centraal Station. For the Museum Quarter, the Vondelpark or Leidseplein, the driver leaves the ring earlier at the Cornelis Lelylaan exit and comes in along the Overtoom. For De Pijp, the RAI and the eastern canal ring, the southern ring past the glass towers of the Zuidas is quicker.
There are no tolls on the way. The A4 and A10 are busiest on weekday mornings from about 07:00 to 09:30 and from 16:00 to 18:30, when the 25-minute drive can take 45. Late evenings and weekend mornings are usually clear.
Inside the ring the city moves slowly by design. Since December 2023 the limit on about 80% of Amsterdam's streets is 30 km/h, and the canal streets are narrow, one-way and shared with cyclists, trams and delivery vans. Amsterdam's low emission zone inside the A10 bars only diesel cars of Euro 4 and older, so it does not affect a modern car. Your driver plans the last few hundred metres around the one-way loops and stops at your door, or at the nearest spot where a car may pull in.

Meeting your driver at Schiphol Airport
All arriving passengers come out through Arrivals 1 to 4 into Schiphol Plaza, the hall above the railway station. Your driver waits there holding a sign with your name. Schiphol's Meeting Point is currently a marked pole between the NS ticket counters and La Place, replacing the old red-and-white cube. The car is parked in the P1 pick-up car park, a few minutes' walk away.
Every arrival at Schiphol comes out through Arrivals 1, 2, 3 or 4 into Schiphol Plaza, the arrivals and shopping hall above the railway station. Your driver waits there with a sign showing your name. The old red-and-white Meeting Point cube has been replaced by a smaller marked pole, for now between the NS train ticket counters and La Place. Your driver's name and number reach you before the trip.
The car waits in the P1 pick-up car park, a few minutes' walk from the Plaza. We track your flight, move the pickup with any delay at no extra cost, and give you 60 minutes of free waiting from the time you actually land.
For the trip back to Schiphol, your driver collects you from your hotel and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Amsterdam
Every address in Amsterdam is door to door, but in the old centre the door can be the nearest corner. Many canal-side streets only have room for a car to stop briefly, Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk are pedestrian, and a few lanes are too narrow for a minivan. Tell us your hotel or apartment address and the driver plans the closest legal stop, usually a few steps from the entrance.
Canal ring (Grachtengordel)
Hotels on the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. The car stops on the canal-side street by your door; bridges and one-way loops make the last stretch slow but short.
Jordaan and the Nine Streets
Boutique hotels and apartments west of the Prinsengracht. Some lanes are too tight for a minivan, which then stops on the nearest canal, about a minute’s walk away.
Centraal, Damrak and Dam Square
Large hotels around the station and the medieval centre. Where a hotel faces a pedestrian street, the driver uses the nearest street open to cars.
Museum Quarter and Vondelpark
Hotels near the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw. Wider streets and easy drop-offs, about 20 minutes from Schiphol in normal traffic.
Zuidas and the RAI
The business district and the RAI convention centre on the southern ring, about 15 minutes from the airport. Handy for conferences and early meetings.

When to book your Amsterdam centre transfer
Amsterdam is busy all year, but some weeks fill every hotel and slow the roads into the centre. The TCS Amsterdam Marathon is on Sunday 18 October 2026, with roads along the course closed for much of the day, and the Amsterdam Dance Event runs from 21 to 25 October 2026. The Amsterdam Light Festival lights up the canals from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027.
Spring is tulip season. Keukenhof gardens near Lisse plan to open from 18 March to 9 May 2027, and King's Day on 27 April turns the centre into one long street party, with parts of it closed to traffic. If you land that day, expect your drop-off at the edge of the closures.
June to August brings the longest days and the most visitors. Winter is quieter, but storms and fog can delay flights. We track your flight, so your pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Amsterdam centre
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 25–45 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Train to Amsterdam Centraal | 17 minutes + onward trip | Several trains an hour from the station under Schiphol Plaza, with hourly night trains after the regular service ends. Quickest to Centraal, but you continue by tram, taxi or on foot with your bags. |
| Airport Express bus 397 | 25–40 minutes + walk | Every few minutes in the day from Schiphol Plaza to Museumplein, Leidseplein and Elandsgracht. Good for the Museum Quarter, but it shares the road with rush-hour traffic and does not go to Centraal. |
| Taxi from the rank | 25–45 minutes | Official taxis wait at the rank outside Schiphol Plaza. Quick enough, but you queue on arrival rather than being met inside, and a child seat is not guaranteed. |
| Rental car | 25–45 minutes plus parking | Easy motorway driving, but central Amsterdam has very little parking, high parking charges and 30 km/h streets full of cyclists. Most visitors never need a car in the city. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Amsterdam centre transfer suits
Families with young children
Child seats fitted before pickup and the pushchair in the boot, with no station escalators or tram steps to manage. One fixed price for the car, not per person.
Groups and friends travelling together
Four to seven people with luggage share one minivan, and larger groups a minibus, instead of buying train tickets and squeezing onto a tram with cases.
Business and conference travellers
Straight to the Zuidas, the RAI or an office on the canals, in a quiet car where you can take calls. Useful for early meetings when the A10 is filling up.
Late arrivals
Once the regular trains finish for the night, only hourly night trains run. A booked driver waits in Schiphol Plaza however late your flight lands.
Plan the rest of your Amsterdam stay
- Book timed-entry tickets for the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum before you travel. In spring and summer the popular slots go weeks ahead.
- Watch the cycle lanes. They are often red asphalt beside the pavement, and bikes arrive quickly and quietly. Step out of the car on the pavement side and look twice.
- An evening canal cruise is an easy first outing after a flight. Boats leave from piers near Centraal, the Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein.
- Visiting Keukenhof in spring? The gardens are about 25 minutes from Schiphol, and we can stop there on the way into Amsterdam with your luggage locked in the car.
- Moving on by train? International services to Brussels and Paris leave from Amsterdam Centraal. If you fly into Paris instead, see our Paris CDG transfer.
- Planning a longer city tour? We also run Prague Airport to the Old Town and Vienna Airport to the centre.
- For your flight home, leave central Amsterdam about two and a half hours before a European departure and three and a half hours before a long-haul one, and check Schiphol’s advice for busy days.
