Dubai Airport to Downtown Dubai: what to expect
The run from Dubai Airport to Downtown Dubai is short: about 14 km from the terminal to the foot of the Burj Khalifa. Your driver meets you in arrivals at Dubai International, crosses Dubai Creek and drops you at your hotel on the Boulevard, at The Dubai Mall or at your apartment tower, usually about 20 minutes later.
The Dubai Metro Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3 to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station without a change, and for one person with a cabin bag it works well. It allows only two pieces of luggage each, though, and the station sits at the far end of a long link bridge from the mall. Families, groups and anyone with real suitcases usually find a car simpler, and the price is per vehicle, with Salik tolls included.
Downtown also makes a good base for the rest of the city. Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina are a short drive further down Sheikh Zayed Road, and we quote rides between hotels as well as from the airport.

The drive from DXB to Downtown Dubai
The route depends on your terminal and the traffic. From Terminal 3, used by Emirates, the usual line follows Airport Road past Al Garhoud, crosses Dubai Creek on Al Maktoum Bridge and runs down Umm Hurair Road and Za'abeel to join Sheikh Zayed Road (E11). From there it is a few minutes past the World Trade Centre, Emirates Towers and DIFC to the Financial Centre Road exit for Downtown.
From Terminal 1, drivers usually cross on Al Garhoud Bridge and come down Sheikh Rashid Road to the same stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road. When both bridges are slow, the Business Bay Crossing and Al Khail Road are the alternative, arriving at Downtown from the south.
All three creek crossings have Salik toll gates. Salik charges the vehicle automatically as it passes, and on this transfer the toll is included in your price, whichever crossing the driver chooses.
The drive is about 14 km and takes around 20 minutes on clear roads: late morning, mid-afternoon or late in the evening. Salik charges its peak rate from 06:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 on weekdays, and those hours are a fair guide to when the bridges and Sheikh Zayed Road are slowest; allow up to 40 minutes then. Flights landing after midnight usually get the quickest run of the day.
Inside Downtown, the last kilometre is often the slowest part. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, the loop road around the Burj Khalifa, is busy in the evening, when crowds gather for the Dubai Fountain. Your driver knows which side of the loop your hotel or tower entrance faces, which saves more time than any choice of bridge.

Meeting your driver at Dubai Airport
Emirates flights arrive at Terminal 3, most other international airlines at Terminal 1, and flydubai and some regional carriers at Terminal 2. After immigration and baggage reclaim, go through customs into the arrivals hall. Your driver waits there holding a sign with your name and walks you to the car park, a short walk from the arrivals exit.
Emirates flights use Terminal 3; most other airlines use Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. Your flight number tells us which. After immigration, baggage reclaim and customs, your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name and walks you to the car, parked two or three minutes from the terminal.
At Terminal 3, pre-booked drivers can also meet guests through DXB Greet & Go, the airport's meeting point in arrivals: if yours uses it, you scan a QR code at the kiosk and staff walk you to the car.
We track your flight, so the pickup moves with delays at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. For the return, your driver collects you from your hotel lobby and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Downtown Dubai
Downtown Dubai is a planned district built around the Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall and the lake where the Dubai Fountain plays, with hotels, apartment towers and offices along Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard. Every building has its own driveway or drop-off bay, so you go door to door. Tell us the hotel or tower name, and the building number for apartments, as several towers have similar names.
The Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa
The mall has several entrances, including Fashion Avenue on the Boulevard, where valet parking runs, and the Grand, Cinema and Zabeel parking areas. Tell us which one suits you.
Boulevard hotels and residences
Hotels and apartment towers along Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, the loop around the Burj Khalifa. Each has its own driveway, so the car stops at the lobby door.
Souk Al Bahar and the Old Town
The low-rise, Arabian-style streets across the lake from the mall, with hotels, fountain-view restaurants and the Souk Al Bahar shops.
DIFC
The financial centre on the other side of Sheikh Zayed Road, with Gate Village, offices and hotels. A few minutes from Downtown, so easy to add as a first stop.
Business Bay
Hotels, offices and apartments along the Dubai Water Canal, just south of Downtown. About the same time from the airport, via Al Khail Road or Financial Centre Road.

When to book your Downtown Dubai transfer
Dubai's season runs from October to April. January's average daytime high is about 24°C, ideal for walking the Boulevard. From June to September it averages 39 to 41°C, and even the walk from the metro to the mall becomes hard work, so a car that waits at the kerb counts most then.
New Year's Eve is the biggest night of the year in Downtown. The Burj Khalifa fireworks draw huge crowds, and roads around the district close for hours beforehand. If you land on 31 December, arrive as early in the day as you can and give us your hotel when you book, so we can plan the closest drop-off allowed that day.
Ramadan in 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February and end with Eid al-Fitr around 9 March, with exact dates set by moon sighting. During the fast, avoid eating or drinking in public in daylight, including in the car, and expect heavy traffic in the hour before sunset as people head home. Transfers run as normal throughout.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Downtown Dubai
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 20–40 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Dubai Metro Red Line | 45–60 minutes door to door | Direct from Terminals 1 and 3 to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, no change. Two pieces of luggage each, including hand luggage, then a long walk over the link bridge. Trains start at 08:00 on Sundays. |
| Dubai Taxi | 20–40 minutes | Cream-coloured metered taxis wait at a rank at every terminal around the clock, and pink-roofed taxis have women drivers. You queue at the rank rather than being met inside, and the fare is not fixed. |
| Ride-hailing apps | 20–40 minutes | Uber, Careem and Bolt all operate at DXB, from signed pickup points outside arrivals. Prices change with demand, and at busy times you may wait for a car with enough boot space. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Downtown Dubai transfer suits
Long-haul arrivals
Terminal 3 is a long walk from gate to kerb after a night flight. A driver waiting in arrivals gets you to your Downtown hotel in about 20 minutes, with no taxi queue.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup, and one price for the vehicle. A minivan takes up to seven people and six or seven suitcases, well beyond the metro’s two-bag limit.
Business travellers
DIFC, Business Bay and Emirates Towers are minutes from Downtown. Add an office stop on the way to the hotel, and take calls in a quiet car rather than a taxi.
Shoppers and event-goers

Plan the rest of your Downtown Dubai stay
- At the Top tickets for the Burj Khalifa are sold by time slot. If you want to be up there at sunset, book before you fly rather than hoping for a slot on the day.
- The Dubai Fountain plays every evening on the lake between the mall and Souk Al Bahar. Terrace tables facing it go quickly, so reserve dinner for your first night before you land.
- Bringing prescription medicines? The UAE requires advance approval for some medications, applied for online through the Ministry of Health. Medicines without approval can be confiscated on arrival.
- UK government advice is to dress modestly in public places such as malls, covering shoulders and knees, and to keep swimwear for beaches and pools.
- Combining Dubai with the capital? We quote hotel-to-hotel rides down Sheikh Zayed Road to Abu Dhabi, and from Abu Dhabi’s own airport to Saadiyat Island if you fly in there.
- For the flight home, leave Downtown about three hours before departure from DXB, and add half an hour if your pickup falls between 16:00 and 20:00 on a weekday.
