Heraklion to Elounda by car: what to expect
Elounda sits on a sheltered lagoon between Mirabello Bay and the island of Spinalonga, in the north-east of Crete. A private Heraklion to Elounda transfer covers the 64 km from Nikos Kazantzakis Airport in about 70 minutes: your driver meets you in arrivals at Heraklion Airport, takes the north coast highway east and drops you at your resort, villa or harbour hotel.
There is no direct bus. Public transport means a city bus into Heraklion, a KTEL coach to Agios Nikolaos and a local bus on to Elounda, which ran every two hours in the October 2026 timetable. Many of Elounda's large resorts are spread along the shore outside the village, some way from any bus stop, so for most guests a car is simply the practical choice.
The price is fixed for the whole vehicle, so a family or a group of friends pays the same as a couple. We quote any other address on Crete as well, and run airport transfers across Greece.

The drive from HER to Elounda
Heraklion Airport is on the coast just east of the city, and within a couple of kilometres of the terminal your driver joins the VOAK, Crete's northern highway, which carries the E75 east along the island. The first half-hour runs inland of the resort strip of Gouves, Hersonissos and Malia. Beyond Malia the road leaves the coast and climbs through the Selinari gorge into the hills of Lasithi.
At Neapoli there are two ways to Elounda, and your driver picks one on the day. The shorter crosses the hills from Neapoli through the village of Pines and drops down to Elounda from above, with the first view over the lagoon and Spinalonga: about 64 km in all, and the line on the diagram below. The other stays on the highway to Agios Nikolaos and follows the coast road north for the last 12 km, past many of the big resorts. It adds about 6 km and suits hotels on the Agios Nikolaos side of Elounda.
Allow about 70 minutes in normal traffic and up to an hour and a half on summer afternoons, when the highway is busy with hire cars and coaches around Hersonissos and Malia and traffic slows through Agios Nikolaos. Evening and night arrivals are usually quicker, with the highway much quieter. The hill road via Pines is narrow and winding, which is one reason a local driver is worth having on your first evening on the island.
Fuel, waiting time and the drive itself are all in the fixed price. If you want a stop on the way, such as a supermarket in Agios Nikolaos for a villa stay, add it to your quote.

Meeting your driver at Heraklion Airport
After baggage reclaim, and passport control if you are flying in from outside the Schengen area, walk out into the arrivals hall. Your driver waits there with a sign showing your name and walks you to the car, parked a short distance from the terminal. Non-EU travellers now register in the EU Entry/Exit System at the border, so the queue can be slow at busy times; your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you land.
Heraklion is Crete's main airport and one of the busiest in Greece. After baggage reclaim, and passport control if you are flying in from outside the Schengen area, walk out into the arrivals hall: your driver waits there with a sign showing your name and walks you to the car. Add your flight number when you book and we track it, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. Your driver's name and phone number reach you before the trip.
For the flight home, your driver collects you from your resort reception or villa gate and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Give us your flight time and we will suggest a pickup that allows for summer traffic on the highway.

Where we drop off in Elounda and Plaka
Most of Elounda’s resorts have their own drive and a reception the car can pull up to, and villas are reached by road, though sometimes a steep or narrow one. Tell us the hotel name, or send a map pin for a villa, especially in the hill villages. If your resort is on the Agios Nikolaos side of the bay, your driver will usually come in along the coast road.
Elounda village and harbour
The fishing harbour and square, with tavernas, small hotels and the boats to Spinalonga. Drop-off at your hotel or by the harbour.
Resort shore towards Agios Nikolaos
The coast south of the village holds many of the large five-star resorts, often with private beaches and long drives down to reception. Door-to-door drop-off.
Plaka
A small fishing village about 5 km north of Elounda, directly opposite Spinalonga, with boutique hotels and resorts nearby. Boats cross to the island from here too.
Salt pans and Kolokytha
The old salt pans and the causeway to the Kolokytha peninsula, a few minutes from the harbour, with quiet villas and apartments around them.
Hill villages and villas
Pines, Mavrikiano and the slopes above the bay have villas reached by narrow lanes. A map pin helps the driver find your gate first time.

When to book your Elounda transfer
Elounda's season runs from about May to October, and July and August are the hottest and busiest months, both on the beaches and on the highway east of Heraklion. Heraklion Airport handled more than 10 million passengers in 2025, so the arrivals hall is crowded at peak times, and travellers on flights from outside the Schengen area, such as the UK, also queue for passport control, where non-EU citizens now register in the EU's Entry/Exit System.
Two dates are especially busy on Crete's roads: 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption and a public holiday across Greece, and Greek Orthodox Easter, which falls on 2 May 2027. Late spring and early autumn bring quieter roads and shorter waits at the airport, and in September and October the sea is still warm.
Looking ahead, a new airport for Heraklion is being built at Kastelli, about 40 km south-east of the city. In January 2026 the Greek government said it expects operations to start in 2028. Until it opens, every flight still uses Nikos Kazantzakis, and nothing changes for your transfer.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Elounda
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 1h 10min – 1h 30min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| City bus + KTEL coach + local bus | 2½–3½ hours | City bus into Heraklion, a KTEL coach to Agios Nikolaos, then the local bus to Elounda, which ran every two hours from 09:00 to 19:00 in October 2026. Two changes with all your luggage. |
| Taxi from the rank | 70–90 minutes | Taxis wait at the rank outside arrivals and run on the meter. Standard taxis take four passengers, so larger families and groups need two cars or a pre-booked minivan. |
| Resort transfer | 70–90 minutes | Some Elounda resorts arrange their own airport cars, usually priced per trip. Worth comparing if you are staying at one, particularly for a couple travelling light. |
| Rental car | 70–90 minutes | Sensible if you plan to tour eastern Crete. You collect the car after the flight and drive an unfamiliar highway, and the hill road via Pines is narrow and winding. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Elounda transfer suits
Families at the big resorts
Child seats fitted for the ages you give us, and a minivan for up to seven with luggage. Drop-off at reception, with no bus changes in Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos.
Couples and honeymooners
Go straight from the plane to a suite on the bay instead of changing buses twice. Spinalonga and the tavernas of Plaka are a short drive from most hotels.
Weddings and groups
Minibuses for 8 to 16 guests, and separate cars for guests landing on different flights. One fixed price per vehicle, so the cost per head falls as the group grows.
Late arrivals
The last local bus to Elounda left Agios Nikolaos at 19:00 in October 2026. A pre-booked car meets late flights at the same fixed price, on a much quieter highway.
Plan the rest of your Elounda stay
- Visit Spinalonga in the morning. Boats leave from Elounda harbour and from Plaka, and the fortress island has little shade by midday in July and August.
- Knossos is only about 7 km from Heraklion Airport. On the way home, add a stop to your quote and your luggage stays locked in the car while you visit.
- Staying in a villa? Ask us to stop at a supermarket in Agios Nikolaos on the way in. It is on the coast-road route and saves a second trip on day one.
- Heading on to the islands? Ferries sail from Heraklion port to Santorini. For the other end, our Santorini Airport to Fira page also covers pickups at Athinios port.
- Flying on to Rhodes? Direct flights link Heraklion and Rhodes, and we cover the drive from Rhodes Airport to Lindos as well.
- For the flight home, leave Elounda about three and a half hours before a summer departure from Heraklion: up to 90 minutes on the road and two hours at a busy airport.
