Athens International Airport is about 30 km east of the city, on the Mesogeia plain. The drive from ATH to Athens City Centre
From the airport, your driver takes the Attiki Odos toll motorway west, then heads into the city along Mesogeion Avenue, or Kifisias and Vasilissis Sofias Avenues, past the embassies and museums to Syntagma Square. From there, the hotels of Plaka, Monastiraki and the Acropolis area are a few minutes away.
The drive takes 35 to 50 minutes. Weekday rush hours and Friday evenings are the slowest times, and some streets in the historic centre are pedestrian or closed to traffic, so your driver stops as close to your door as the streets allow.
Meeting your driver at Athens Airport
Athens Airport has one main terminal building. Passengers from outside the Schengen area pass through passport control, then everyone collects their bags and exits into the same arrivals hall on the ground floor. Your driver waits at the arrivals exit holding a sign with your name.

When to book your Athens City Centre transfer
Athens is a year-round city, busiest from April to October and around Easter. In July and August the heat is intense and many Athenians head for the islands, so the city is quieter. For island hopping, many visitors spend a night or two in Athens and then take a ferry from Piraeus or Rafina.

Local tips for your Athens City Centre transfer
- Landing late? The metro stops around midnight, but your driver will be waiting whatever time you land.
- Staying in Plaka? Some lanes are pedestrian-only; share your address and we'll plan the closest drop-off.
- Visit the Acropolis early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds.
- For your flight home, leave central Athens about two and a half hours before a European departure and three hours before a long-haul one.
