Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet by private car
A private transfer from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet covers about 50 km, from the airport near the Black Sea coast to the historic peninsula, where Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace stand a few minutes' walk apart. Your driver meets you at Istanbul Airport arrivals and takes you to your hotel door in about 50 minutes, longer in the weekday rush.
Check your ticket first. This page is for Istanbul Airport (IST), north of the city on the European side. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is a separate airport on the Asian side, and we quote from there too.
The public options are good value but take effort. The Havaist coach stops on the edge of Sultanahmet, and the metro needs at least one change, then a walk or a tram ride over cobbles and tram tracks. A car makes most sense with luggage, children, a late flight or three or more people, because the price is for the vehicle, not per seat.
Heading for the coast after Istanbul? We also run transfers across Turkey, from the Antalya resorts to the Aegean.

The drive from IST to Sultanahmet
Your driver has two ways into the old city and picks the one that is moving better on the day.
The usual route follows the O-7 Northern Marmara Motorway, a toll road (the toll is included in your price), south past Başakşehir to the Mahmutbey interchange. An urban motorway then runs east past Bayrampaşa and crosses the line of the Theodosian land walls onto Vatan Caddesi, the broad avenue into the historic peninsula. From Aksaray, city streets lead down to Sultanahmet: about 50 km in all.
The alternative is the toll-free D-020, which runs south from the airport through the forest around Göktürk and Kemerburgaz to the Hasdal junction, then drops down to the Golden Horn and crosses the Galata Bridge, arriving by the New Mosque and the Spice Bazaar at Eminönü. It is a few kilometres shorter and sometimes quicker when the motorway is jammed.
Early in the morning, late in the evening and on many weekend mornings, the drive takes about 50 minutes. Weekday mornings and evenings are the slowest times, when it can stretch to 1½ hours. After midnight it is often closer to 45 minutes.
The last kilometre is the slowest part. The T1 tram runs through the middle of Sultanahmet, several streets around the square are closed to cars, and the hotel lanes below the Blue Mosque are steep and cobbled. Your driver knows which side of the square each hotel is reached from, and stops as close to your door as the street allows.

Meeting your driver at Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Airport has one very large terminal, with separate arrivals exits for international and domestic flights. After passport control, baggage reclaim and customs, walk out into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. The car is parked in the airport's multi-storey car park, a short walk away. Havaist coaches leave from the transport floor below arrivals, and the M11 metro station is linked to the terminal.
Istanbul Airport has a single, very large terminal, with separate arrivals exits for international and domestic passengers. Give us your flight number and we know which one you will use. Your driver waits at the arrivals exit with a sign showing your name, then walks you to the car in the airport's multi-storey car park.
Passport queues and baggage halls can be slow at peak times. We track your flight, adjust to delays at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land.
For the trip back, your driver collects you from your hotel door, or the nearest street the car can reach, and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Sultanahmet and the old city
Sultanahmet's streets were laid out long before cars. Several lanes around the square are pedestrian-only, the T1 tram has the middle of the main avenue, and the hotel streets below the Blue Mosque are steep and cobbled. For most hotels the car stops at the door; for a few it stops at the nearest corner. Send us the hotel name and we plan the last turn.
Sultanahmet Square and Hagia Sophia
Hotels on and around the square, along Kabasakal Caddesi and in the lanes towards Topkapı Palace. Some sit on pedestrian streets, so the car stops at the closest open corner.
Cankurtaran and Akbıyık
The quieter streets between the Blue Mosque and the sea walls, full of small hotels with rooftop terraces. Narrow and cobbled, but most are reached by car.
Küçük Ayasofya and Kadırga
South-west of the Hippodrome towards the Sea of Marmara, around the Little Hagia Sophia mosque. Easy to reach from the coast road, Kennedy Caddesi.
Sirkeci and Gülhane
Hotels around Sirkeci station and the Gülhane Park gate below Topkapı Palace, a short walk from the Eminönü ferries and the Spice Bazaar.
Çemberlitaş and the Grand Bazaar
Along the tram line towards Beyazıt and the Grand Bazaar. Drop-offs here are usually made from the side streets rather than the tram avenue itself.

When to book your Sultanahmet transfer
Istanbul has no off season, but it changes character through the year. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months for walking the old city. July and August are hot and busy, with cruise passengers coming ashore at Galataport and long queues at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace. Winter is quieter, with rain and occasional snow.
A few dates affect the drive. The Istanbul Marathon on Sunday 1 November 2026 starts on the 15 July Martyrs Bridge and finishes in Sultanahmet, so roads into the old city close for much of that morning. Ramadan ends with the Ramazan Bayramı holiday on 9–11 March 2027, and Kurban Bayramı runs from 16 to 19 May 2027. Roads out of the city are busiest on the eve of each holiday. During Ramadan, traffic often peaks in the hour before the evening meal that breaks the fast.
Landing mid-morning or late in the evening usually gives the clearest run into the city.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Sultanahmet
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 50 min – 1h 30min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Havaist coach (Sultanahmet line) | 1¼–2 hours | The airport's coach leaves from the transport floor below arrivals and runs via Eminönü to Çatladıkapı, on the southern edge of Sultanahmet. Luggage holds and fixed stops, but it sits in the same traffic. |
| M11 metro + M2 metro or tram | 1½–2 hours | The M11 runs from the airport station to Gayrettepe, where you change to the M2 and then walk or take the T1 tram into Sultanahmet. Traffic-proof, but stairs and crowds with cases. |
| Airport taxi | 50–90 minutes | Metered taxis wait outside arrivals around the clock. Same roads and similar time as a private car, but you queue at the rank and the fare is only known at the end. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Sultanahmet transfer suits
First-time visitors
After a long flight and a long walk through the terminal, a driver at the exit and a car to the hotel door is the easiest start to an Istanbul trip.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup, buggies and cases in the boot, and one price for the vehicle. A minivan takes up to seven people with their luggage.
Late arrivals and early flights
Many long-haul flights land late in the evening or before dawn. The car runs 24/7, and quiet roads at night often bring the drive down to around 45 minutes.
Cruise passengers
Starting or ending a cruise at Galataport? We can drive you from the airport to a Sultanahmet hotel first, then on to the terminal in Karaköy on sailing day.
Plan the rest of your Istanbul stay
- Mosques close to sightseers during prayers, for longest at Friday midday. Plan the Blue Mosque for the morning and carry a scarf: women cover their hair, and everyone covers shoulders and knees.
- Topkapı Palace and Hagia Sophia have their longest queues in the middle of the day. Go at opening time, and buy tickets online where the site offers them.
- Pick up an İstanbulkart for the tram, metro and ferries. The Eminönü piers, a short walk from Sultanahmet, are the starting point for Bosphorus boat trips.
- Spending part of the trip in Karaköy, Galata or Taksim? The move across the Golden Horn is about 8 km, 15 to 40 minutes by car depending on traffic, and we quote hotel-to-hotel rides.
- Flying on to the coast? Domestic flights from Istanbul reach Antalya, Bodrum and Dalaman, and we can meet you there for Side, Yalikavak or Fethiye and Ölüdeniz.
- For the flight home, leave Sultanahmet about 3½ hours before a European departure and 4 hours before a long-haul one. The terminal is vast, and the walk to some gates is long.
