Malpensa to Milan by car: what to expect
Malpensa is Milan's main international airport, but it sits 50 km north-west of the city, near the Ticino river. Getting from Malpensa to Milan by private car takes about 50 minutes in normal traffic: your driver meets you in arrivals, takes the motorway into the city and drops you at the door of your hotel, office or the trade fair.
The Malpensa Express train is quick to Cadorna or Centrale stations, and for a solo traveller with a carry-on it is hard to beat. The private car makes sense when the station is not where you are going: hotels in Brera, Porta Nuova or CityLife, the Fiera at Rho, an early meeting, or three or four people whose train tickets add up to more than one car.
Milan Malpensa is also the gateway to the lakes and the Alps. If Milan is your first stop, we can quote your next leg too, such as Malpensa to Lake Como.

The drive from MXP to Milan
From Terminal 1, your driver takes the SS336 airport expressway east past Busto Arsizio to join the A8 Milano–Laghi motorway, one of the oldest motorways in Europe, which runs south-east to the city boundary at Milano Nord. From there the route follows the city's ring roads to your address. Terminal 2, used by easyJet, adds a few minutes.
The A8 is busiest on weekday mornings from about 07:30 to 09:00 and in the evening from 17:00 to 19:30, when the 50-minute drive can stretch to 80. Arriving in the middle of the day or at weekends is usually quicker.
Central Milan's congestion zone, Area C, covers the old city inside the ring of the Spanish walls, on working days from 07:30 to 19:30. Licensed hire cars with up to nine seats are exempt from the charge, so your driver can take you to hotels around the Duomo, in Brera or the Quadrilatero without stopping at the edge.

For the return to Malpensa, your driver collects you from your hotel or office and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Give us your flight time and terminal, and we will suggest a pickup that allows for the A8 at rush hour.

When to book your Milan transfer
Milan is a year-round business city, but a few weeks fill every hotel and slow every road. The Salone del Mobile design fair takes over Fiera Milano Rho from 13 to 18 April 2027. Fashion weeks run in January and June (men's) and in February and September (women's). The Italian Grand Prix at Monza, north of the city, is on 3 to 5 September 2027.
During those weeks, book your transfer early and allow extra time on the A8 in the morning. August is the opposite: many Milanese leave the city around the 15 August holiday, and the roads are at their emptiest.
Winter fog over the Po plain can delay flights into Malpensa. We track your flight, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Milan
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 50 min – 1h 20min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Malpensa Express train | 37–51 minutes + onward trip | Every 30 minutes from both terminals to Cadorna (37 minutes) or to Centrale via Porta Garibaldi (51 minutes). Fast, but you continue by metro or taxi with your bags. |
| Airport coach | 50–80 minutes + onward trip | Several companies run coaches from Terminal 1 to Milano Centrale, about every 20 to 30 minutes. Slower than the train in weekday traffic. |
| Airport taxi | 50–80 minutes | A regulated fixed fare to any address in Milan, from the rank outside arrivals. You queue at the rank rather than being met inside. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Milan transfer suits
Business travellers
A driver waiting in arrivals, a quiet car to take calls in, and a drop-off at the office door, inside Area C if needed.
Trade fair visitors
Fiera Milano Rho is on the way into the city. Ask for a drop-off at the fair and a hotel transfer in the evening.
Fashion and design weeks
When the city is full, taxis queue for a long time. A booked car avoids the rank and handles garment bags and samples.
Families and small groups
Child seats fitted before pickup, and one price for the car. A minivan takes up to seven people with luggage.
Plan the rest of your Milan trip
- Book The Last Supper well ahead. Tickets for Santa Maria delle Grazie are timed and often sell out weeks in advance.
- The Duomo rooftop terraces are quietest first thing in the morning. Buy a timed ticket that includes them rather than queuing on the day.
- Staying for business but free one evening? The Navigli canal district is the classic place for an aperitivo, a short taxi ride south of the centre.
- Heading to the Alps after Milan? Malpensa has direct transfers to Zermatt and St. Moritz, and you can start from your Milan hotel instead.
- If you fly into Milan again and have the choice, Linate airport is only 7 km from the centre. Malpensa has far more long-haul flights.
- For your flight home from Malpensa, leave central Milan about two and a half hours before a European departure, and three hours before a long-haul one. Add time on weekday mornings.
