Getting from Venice Airport to Venice: what a car can and cannot do
Venice is a city without roads, so the honest answer to "how do I get from Venice Airport to Venice?" starts with where you are staying. A car can drive 15 km from Marco Polo Airport across the lagoon to Piazzale Roma, the square at the end of the causeway, and no further. From there you walk, take a vaporetto or a water taxi to your hotel.
That makes a private transfer the right choice for some trips and not for others. It is the fastest door-to-door option if you are staying near Piazzale Roma or the railway station, boarding a ship at the cruise terminals, or staying in Mestre or elsewhere on the mainland. If your hotel has its own water door on the Grand Canal, a water taxi from the airport dock may suit you better, and we say so below.

The drive from VCE to Venice
Your driver leaves the airport on the SS14 towards Mestre, skirts the edge of the mainland city and joins the Ponte della Libertà, the four-kilometre road bridge built across the lagoon in 1933 alongside the older railway bridge. The causeway ends at Piazzale Roma, the city's bus terminal and car-park hub, on the north-western edge of the historic centre.
The drive takes about 20 minutes in normal traffic, the same as the non-stop airport express bus, and up to 35 minutes when the Mestre ring road and the bridge are busy on summer weekends. The cruise terminals at Marittima are a few minutes beyond Piazzale Roma by road, and Mestre hotels are on the way in.
At Piazzale Roma the car pulls up, the driver unloads your bags at the kerb, and you are a short walk from the vaporetto stops on the Grand Canal and the Ponte della Costituzione footbridge to the railway station.

Meeting your driver at Venice Airport

Venice Marco Polo has a single terminal with arrivals on the ground floor. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name and walks you to the car. Where the car can take you in Venice
Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto are the only places in the island city that cars can reach. Everything else in the historic centre is on foot or by boat. On the mainland side, every address is door to door.
Piazzale Roma
For hotels in Santa Croce and near the station, a short walk away, and for the vaporetto and water taxis on the Grand Canal.
Cruise terminals
Venice Marittima and San Basilio for smaller ships. Larger ships now use Fusina or Porto Marghera on the mainland; tell us your ship and we drive to the right berth.
Mestre and Marghera
Mainland hotels, often better value, with frequent buses and trains over the bridge. Door-to-door drop-off.
Tronchetto
The car-ferry dock for the Lido and the People Mover to Piazzale Roma. Useful for some cruise and Lido connections.

When to book your Venice transfer
Venice is busy from Easter to October and again during Carnival, which runs from 23 January to 9 February in 2027. The Biennale fills hotels for months at a time: the Art Biennale runs until 22 November 2026, and the Architecture Biennale opens on 8 May 2027. The Film Festival takes over the Lido in early September, and the Redentore fireworks fall on the third Saturday of July.
On peak days in spring and summer, Venice charges day visitors an access fee to enter the historic centre. Hotel guests are exempt, but you must request the free exemption online before you arrive. The 2027 dates had not been published when we last checked.
Large cruise ships no longer sail through the Giudecca Canal, so many cruise passengers now board at Fusina, Porto Marghera, Trieste or Ravenna instead of the old Marittima terminal. Check your ship's terminal before you book.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Venice
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 20–35 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport express bus | 20 minutes + transfer at Piazzale Roma | The non-stop ATVO bus runs about every 30 minutes to Piazzale Roma, the same place a car drops you. Good value, with your bags in the hold. |
| Alilaguna boat | 65–75 minutes | Public boats from the airport dock to stops across the city, including Rialto and San Marco. One large bag included, extra bags charged. |
| Water taxi | Depends on your hotel | Private boats from the airport dock to any water door in Venice. The most direct option for Grand Canal hotels, at a much higher price. We do not run water taxis. |
| Airport taxi | 20–35 minutes | Fixed fares from the rank outside arrivals to Piazzale Roma, the cruise terminal and Mestre. You queue at the rank rather than being met in arrivals. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Venice transfer suits
Cruise passengers
Straight from arrivals to your ship, or from the ship to the airport, without taking luggage through the city. Tell us the terminal and sailing time.
Hotels near Piazzale Roma and the station
Santa Croce and western Cannaregio are a short walk from the drop-off, so the car gets you closer than any other land option.
Mainland stays
Mestre and Marghera hotels are door to door, and much cheaper than the island. You reach Venice each day by bus or train over the bridge.
Groups with luggage
A minivan or minibus takes everyone and every bag in one go, at one price for the vehicle. Continue by water taxi from Piazzale Roma if needed.
Plan the rest of your Venice stay
- Pack light if your hotel is in the centre. Venice has more than 400 bridges, most with steps, and wheeled cases make slow work of them.
- Porters work around Piazzale Roma and the station, but they are not an official service. Agree the price before you hand over your bags.
- Request your access-fee exemption on the official Venice portal before you travel if your dates fall on a fee day. It is free for hotel guests.
- Buy a multi-day public transport pass if you plan to use the vaporetto often. Single tickets add up quickly.
- Moving on by road? We run transfers from Venice to the Dolomites, and quote longer trips such as Venice to Milan or Florence.
- Continuing to Tuscany? Take the fast train to Florence and we can meet you there, or see our Pisa to Florence and Florence to Siena transfers for the rest of your trip through Italy.
- For your flight home, leave Piazzale Roma about two and a half hours before a European departure, to allow for the bridge and check-in.
