Dubrovnik airport to Old Town: how the transfer works
A private Dubrovnik airport to Old Town transfer covers the 21 km from Čilipi to the city walls in about 35 minutes. Your driver meets you as you come out of arrivals at Dubrovnik Airport, loads the bags once and follows the coast road north-west to Pile Gate, Ploče Gate or your hotel in Lapad, Babin Kuk or Gruž.
The airport shuttle bus is a sound choice if you travel light and are staying near Ploče Gate or the bus station at Gruž. A car makes more sense when your address is somewhere else, when you land late with children, or when three or four of you are travelling: the price is fixed for the whole vehicle, not per seat.
The Old Town itself is car-free, and from March to November the streets around it are a permit-only traffic zone, so we confirm the closest legal drop-off for your address before you fly. Planning more of the coast? Our Croatia transfers page covers Split and the islands too.

The drive from DBV to Dubrovnik Old Town
From the terminal your driver joins the D8, the Adriatic coast road (Jadranska magistrala), and stays on it almost all the way. There is no motorway and no toll on this stretch, just a two-lane road along the hillside above the sea.
A few minutes from the airport comes the turn for Cavtat, the small harbour town south of the runway. The D8 then runs high above the bay of Župa dubrovačka, with the beach villages of Mlini, Srebreno and Kupari below the road. Shortly before the city it rounds the hillside and the Old Town comes into view below, with the island of Lokrum just offshore.
The road drops into the city above Ploče. For Pile Gate, on the far side, it follows the streets above the northern walls; for Lapad, Babin Kuk and the port at Gruž it carries on west through the newer districts.
In normal traffic the trip takes about 35 minutes. The D8 is the only main road in, and the airport itself advises allowing up to an hour in summer, when several flights land close together and the city is at its busiest. Early-morning and late-evening arrivals are usually the quickest of the day.
The traffic zone: from 1 March to 30 November, the streets around the Old Town, including Pile, Ploče and the roads above the walls, form a camera-controlled zone that only vehicles with a city permit may enter. Licensed taxis with access rights and some vehicles registered by hotels inside the zone can drive in; other cars stop at its edge. We tell you the exact drop-off point, and how far it is from your door, when we send your quote. Outside that period the zone is switched on only for big events and very busy days.

Meeting your driver at Dubrovnik Airport
Arrivals at Dubrovnik use Terminal B and departures use Terminal C. After baggage reclaim and customs, walk out into the Terminal B arrivals area, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. Taxis and the airport shuttle bus wait in front of the same building, so look for your name rather than the offers. Your driver then walks you the short distance to the car.
Arrivals at Dubrovnik use Terminal B; departures use Terminal C. After baggage reclaim and customs, walk out into the arrivals area, where your driver waits with a sign showing your name. Taxis and the shuttle bus wait outside the same exit, so look for your name rather than the offers.
Add your flight number when you book and we track it: the pickup moves with delays at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. Your driver’s name and phone number reach you before the trip, and WhatsApp support runs 24/7.
For the return, your driver collects you from your hotel, or from the agreed point at the edge of the traffic zone, and waits up to 15 minutes. Choose a time that allows for summer traffic on the D8.

Where we drop off in Dubrovnik
Inside the walls every street is pedestrian. Most visitors are dropped at one of the two main gates: Pile on the west side, by the bus stops and Onofrio’s Fountain, or Ploče on the east side, near the cable car. From March to November both gates sit inside the permit-only zone, so send us your exact address and we will confirm the nearest legal stop.
Pile Gate and the western Old Town
The main entrance at the western end of the Stradun, close to the Franciscan monastery. Many apartments in the western lanes are reached by long flights of stone steps.
Ploče Gate and the Ploče seafront
The eastern entrance, by the Old Port and near the lower station of the Srđ cable car. Hotels along the Ploče seafront lie a short way further east.
Lapad and Babin Kuk
The peninsula west of the centre, home to most of Dubrovnik’s large resort hotels and beaches. Door-to-door drop-offs, a few kilometres beyond the Old Town.
Gruž port and bus station
The cruise terminal, the ferry and catamaran piers and the main bus station line Gruž harbour, 2 to 3 km from the Old Town. We drop you at the right pier.
Cavtat
Staying south of the airport instead? Cavtat is about 5 km from the terminal, roughly 15 minutes, with door-to-door drop-offs at hotels and villas.

When to book your Dubrovnik Old Town transfer
Dubrovnik’s season runs from about May to October, with the busiest weeks in July and August. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival, held each year from 10 July to 25 August, stages theatre and concerts in squares and forts across the Old Town, and hotels inside and near the walls fill early.
Cruise ships add to the crowds. Most berth at Gruž, and the city limits calls to two ships a day. Passengers usually come ashore in the morning and return by late afternoon, so arriving in the early evening often means a calmer first walk through the walls.
Winter is quieter, and the traffic zone normally rests from December to February. On 3 February the Feast of St Blaise, the city’s patron, fills the Stradun with processions, a tradition kept since 972 and recognised by UNESCO.
From May to October, allow extra time on the D8 on afternoons when several flights land together.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Dubrovnik Old Town
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 35 min – 1h | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Platanus airport shuttle | 30–35 minutes + walk | Leaves about 30 minutes after each arrival, stopping at Ploče Gate and then Gruž bus station. One suitcase per ticket is included. Good value solo, but you walk on from the stop with your bags. |
| Libertas city buses | Check the timetable | Local lines 11, 27 and 38 also serve the airport. They run to a published timetable rather than to flights, so check times before relying on them, especially for an evening landing. |
| Taxi from the rank | 35–60 minutes | Taxis wait in front of Terminal B during airport hours. Ask for the fare to your address before you set off, and expect a queue when several flights land together. |
| Rental car | 35–60 minutes plus parking | Rental cars cannot enter the Old Town traffic zone from March to November, and parking near the walls is scarce. Useful for touring Konavle or Montenegro later, not for your first night. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Dubrovnik Old Town transfer suits
Cruise passengers
Embarking or leaving a ship at Gruž? We drive straight between the cruise terminal and the airport, or via your hotel, with room for the luggage of a two-week trip.
Families
Child seats fitted before you land and one price for the whole car. A minivan takes up to seven with luggage, so nobody waits at the rank for a second taxi.
Late arrivals
Landing in the evening with tired children? Your driver tracks the flight, waits 60 minutes from touchdown and takes you to the closest legal stop to your door.
Travellers going on to Montenegro
Staying in Herceg Novi, Kotor or Budva? We quote the cross-border ride from Dubrovnik Airport door to door, with the passport check at Karasovići on the way.
Plan the rest of your Dubrovnik stay
- Walk the city walls early or late in the day. In July and August the midday sun on the ramparts is fierce, and the walkway is busiest when cruise passengers are ashore.
- Many Old Town apartments sit up long stone stairways off the Stradun. Ask your host which gate is closer and how many steps there are before you pack.
- The cable car from above Ploče to Srđ hill gives the classic view over the walls and Lokrum. Sunset is popular, so expect a queue in summer.
- Ferries and catamarans to the nearby islands leave from Gruž harbour. We can drop you at the pier on the way in from the airport if you are sailing the same day.
- Flying home from Montenegro instead? Tivat is the airport for the Bay of Kotor and Budva; see Tivat Airport to Budva for that end of the trip.
- Moving on to Split? We drive the coast via the Pelješac Bridge, which since July 2022 avoids the border crossings at Neum. See our Split airport transfers too.
- For the flight home, leave the Old Town about two and a half hours before a European departure in summer, and a little less from November to March.
