Bali Airport to Uluwatu, villa gate to villa gate

A private Bali Airport to Uluwatu transfer takes you 23 km south from Bali Airport, up onto the limestone Bukit peninsula to the surf beaches, cliff-top villas and the sea temple at its south-western tip. On a clear road it takes about 45 minutes. Around sunset, when surfers, beach-club guests and temple visitors are all heading the same way, it can take an hour and a half.

Uluwatu is not a town but a spread of villages, clifftops and lanes, and that is where a pre-booked driver earns their keep. Many villas sit down narrow, steep lanes off the main road, gates are often unsigned, and a place that looks close on the map can be a long way round by road.

The real choice on arrival is between a taxi from the counter, a ride-hailing car or a driver already waiting with your name. A transfer is one fixed price for the whole vehicle, agreed before you fly, with the drive to your villa gate included. Staying on the calmer east side of the Bukit instead? The drive from DPS to Uluwatu

From the airport your driver joins the Ngurah Rai bypass heading south, skirting the edge of Jimbaran, then turns inland and climbs onto the Bukit peninsula, a raised plateau of dry limestone, on Jalan Raya Uluwatu. The road passes the turning for the Garuda Wisnu Kencana cultural park and runs on south-west towards Pecatu, past villa walls, warungs, surf shops and building sites. There are no tolls on this route.

Near Pecatu the road divides. Jalan Labuansait heads north-west through the village, past the lanes down to Bingin, Padang Padang and Suluban, the beaches where most surfers and villa guests stay. The main road carries on to Uluwatu Temple, on its 70-metre cliff at the end of the peninsula.

The roads get narrower and slower the further south you go. They are busy with scooters, and many roads on the Bukit do not connect directly, so a villa that looks close on a map can mean a detour of 20 minutes inland. The lanes to cliff-top villas are often steep and single-track, and some are too tight for a minibus. Tell us your villa and group size, and we will send a vehicle that fits the access road.

Allow about 45 minutes in normal traffic, and 40 or less late at night. From mid-afternoon to sunset, with the surf crowd, the beach clubs and visitors to the temple's 6pm Kecak dance all on the road, the same drive can take an hour and a half. Landing in the morning or after dark gives the easiest run. Indonesia drives on the left.

Meeting your driver at Bali Airport

International flights arrive at the international terminal. After immigration (with your visa on arrival or e-VOA), baggage reclaim and customs, you walk out into a covered arrivals area lined with drivers holding signs. Your driver is among them with your name; we send the exact meeting point and their WhatsApp number before you fly.

You will be offered taxis and porters on the way out. A polite "no, thank you" is enough.

International flights arrive at the international terminal, and flights from Jakarta and other Indonesian cities at the domestic terminal next door. We track your flight, so your driver waits at the right one. After immigration and customs you walk out past the taxi counters into the arrivals area, where drivers wait with name signs; your driver's name, WhatsApp number and the exact meeting point reach you before you fly.

Your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land, and delays move the pickup at no extra cost.

For the return, your driver collects you at your villa gate or hotel entrance and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Leave Uluwatu about three and a half hours before an international flight.

Where we drop off around Uluwatu

Uluwatu is spread across the south-western Bukit, and the last few hundred metres are often the trickiest: narrow lanes, steep drives and gates without numbers. Send us your villa name, a map pin and your group size, and we will send a vehicle that fits the access road. Where a car cannot reach the door, your driver stops at the closest point to it.

Bingin

Guesthouses and villas stacked on the cliff above a reef beach. The car stops at the top and the last part is on foot down steep steps, so ask your host about help with bags.

Padang Padang and Suluban

Villas and boutique hotels along and behind Jalan Labuansait, close to the Padang Padang and Uluwatu surf breaks. Lanes are narrow and some gates sit on unlit bends.

Uluwatu Temple and the southern cliffs

Cliff-top resorts and private villas near the temple and along the coast to the south. Larger resorts have their own drives; villas need a map pin.

Ungasan and the south coast

Large cliff-top resorts east of Uluwatu, with private roads down to the beaches below. Allow 40 to 70 minutes from the airport, depending on the time of day.

When to book your Uluwatu transfer

Uluwatu's busiest months are the dry season, from about April to October, which is also the main surf season on the Bukit's west-facing reefs. Villas fill fastest in July, August and the Christmas–New Year weeks. From November to March the wet season brings short, heavy afternoon downpours and fewer visitors.

Nyepi falls on 9 March 2027. From 6am that day to 6am on 10 March, the airport is closed, road travel stops and guests stay inside their villas, so no transfers run. Many local roads also close for parades on the evening of 8 March, so land by late morning that day or wait until the 10th.

Every evening the Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple starts at 6pm, and the roads to the temple and the clifftop beach clubs are busiest from about 4pm. That is the slowest time to arrive. Landing in the morning or after dark makes for a quicker drive at any time of year.

Private transfer45 min – 1h 30minStraight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals.
Airport taxi45–90 minutesBook at the official counter near the arrivals exit and you are walked to a car at a quoted fare. Fine for a hotel on the main road; drivers may not know the lane to a private villa.
Ride-hailing app45–90 minutesBook at the Grab booth or in the app and meet the car in the pickup area. Convenient, but villa pins can be hard to find after dark, and larger cars are scarce.
Villa pickup45–90 minutesMany villas can arrange a driver who knows the lane. Convenient; compare the price, check whether it is per person or per car, and ask how long they wait if your flight is late.

Vehicles, prices and what's included

You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.

Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.

Who the Uluwatu transfer suits

Surfers

Board bags travel inside a van, not strapped to a scooter. Tell us how many boards you have and their length, and we will send a vehicle with room for them.

Villa groups

Friends sharing a cliff-top villa travel together in a minivan for up to seven or a minibus for up to 16, with one fixed price for the vehicle.

Wedding guests

Uluwatu’s clifftops host many weddings. We coordinate cars for guests on different flights, and can quote the run to the venue on the day.

Late-afternoon arrivals

Landing just before sunset means the slowest roads of the day. Your driver knows the quicker lines across the Bukit and the right lane in the dark.

Plan the rest of your Uluwatu stay

  • Pay the Bali tourist levy, IDR 150,000 per person once per trip, through the official Love Bali website or app before you fly, and keep the QR voucher on your phone.
  • The 6pm Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple is popular, so arrive early, and keep sunglasses, hats and phones out of reach: the temple’s macaques are notorious for snatching them.
  • Check your villa’s access before you fly. Ask whether a minivan can reach the gate and how many steps lead down to the rooms, especially at Bingin.
  • Uluwatu pairs well with a slower week inland. We drive villa to villa to Ubud, about two hours away, or to the beach clubs of Seminyak.
  • Surf breaks change with the tide. Ask your villa which beaches suit your level before you plan your first morning, and allow for the steps down at Bingin and Padang Padang.
  • For your flight home, leave Uluwatu about three and a half hours before an international departure, and four hours if you are leaving between mid-afternoon and sunset.

Bali Airport to Uluwatu: your questions

How long does it take from Bali Airport to Uluwatu?

About 45 minutes for the 23 km to the Labuansait road and Suluban beach in normal traffic. From mid-afternoon to sunset, when surfers and temple visitors fill the roads, allow up to an hour and a half; late at night, 40 minutes or less. Bingin and Padang Padang are a few minutes closer, and the cliffs near the temple about the same.

How much is a private transfer from Bali Airport to Uluwatu?

You pay one fixed price for the whole vehicle, not per person, so it is shared by everyone in the car. It depends on the vehicle size, the time you land and any stops you add. Fuel, flight tracking and waiting time are included. Enter your trip above and we email your price within 24 hours; nothing is charged until you accept it.

Can the car reach our cliff-top villa?

Usually to the gate. Many Uluwatu villas sit on narrow, steep lanes, and some are too tight for a minibus, so send us the villa name, a map pin and your group size and we will choose a vehicle that fits. Clifftop guesthouses at Bingin are reached on foot by steps, so the car stops at the top.

Can you carry surfboards from Bali Airport?

Yes. Tell us how many board bags you have and their length when you request a quote, and we will send a vehicle with room for them inside, usually a minivan. Several boards plus suitcases for a group may need a minibus.

What happens if my flight to Bali is late?

We track your flight number, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. If a delay runs past three hours or your flight is diverted, message us on WhatsApp: under our policy that can need a new booking, and we will help you rearrange it.

Can we land in Bali during Nyepi 2027?

No. On Nyepi, 9 March 2027, the airport is closed from 6am until 6am on 10 March, traffic is banned and everyone stays indoors, so transfers cannot run. Roads also close for parades on the evening of 8 March. Book your arrival before or after; our guide to Bali transfers has more on the Day of Silence.

Is a taxi or Grab from Bali Airport to Uluwatu just as good?

For a hotel on the main road they take the same time as a private car. The difference is at the end: drivers who do not know the Bukit can struggle with unsigned villa lanes after dark, and ride-hailing cars are often small. A pre-booked transfer has a fixed price per vehicle, a named driver and your map pin in advance.
