Phuket Airport to Khao Lak by private car
A private Phuket Airport to Khao Lak transfer is a 77 km drive north from Phuket International Airport, off the island by bridge and up the Andaman coast of Phang Nga province to your resort. It takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, and up to 1 hour 40 minutes in traffic or roadworks.
There is no direct public transport. Long-distance buses to Takua Pa and Ranong pass through Khao Lak but do not call at the airport, so you would need a taxi to the main road or to Phuket's bus terminal in town first. Shared minibuses leave the airport a few times a day and stop at several hotels on the way.
So most visitors go by car, and the real choice is between a taxi from the counter and a pre-booked driver waiting with your name as you walk out. With a transfer the price is fixed for the whole vehicle, which counts on a long drive for a family or a group of divers with gear bags. Staying on the island instead? See Phuket Airport to Patong.

The drive from HKT to Khao Lak
From the terminal, your driver takes the airport road east to Highway 402, Thepkrasattri Road, the main road down the middle of Phuket, and turns north. After about 15 minutes you reach the narrow channel between the island and the mainland. The original Sarasin Bridge, opened in 1967, is now for people on foot only; cars cross on the newer bridge beside it, and on the far side you are in Phang Nga province.
At Khok Kloi, Highway 402 meets Highway 4, Phetkasem Road, which your driver follows north for the rest of the trip. It runs a little inland, through rubber plantations, small towns and the district centre of Thai Mueang, with the sea on your left and forested hills ahead. Parts of it are a single carriageway shared with motorbikes, pickups and slow lorries, and long stretches between the towns are unlit at night, one reason many visitors would rather not drive it after a long flight.
The last few kilometres climb over the headland of the Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park on a winding stretch above the sea, then drop into Khao Lak itself, where resorts line the road and the beaches for about 25 km to the north. There are no toll roads on the way.
Allow about 1 hour 20 minutes to central Khao Lak, a little more for Bang Niang, Khuk Khak and Pakarang, and up to 1 hour 40 minutes when the island roads are busy or roadworks narrow the highway. Thailand drives on the left.

Meeting your driver at Phuket Airport
International flights arrive at the international terminal. After immigration and customs, you exit into an arrivals area where many drivers wait with signs; yours holds a sign with your name. Phuket Airport gets crowded in high season, so we send your driver's WhatsApp number before you fly.
Phuket's international and domestic terminals stand side by side. If you connect through Bangkok on a domestic flight, you arrive at the domestic side; we track your flight number, so your driver waits at the right exit. The arrivals area is crowded in high season, so you receive your driver's name and phone number before you fly and can message them from the baggage hall.
Delays move the pickup at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land, which allows for long immigration queues in the busy months.
For the trip back, your driver collects you from your resort and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Leave Khao Lak about four hours before an international flight.

Where we drop off in Khao Lak
Khao Lak is not one town but a string of beach villages along Highway 4, with resorts between the road and the sea. Most have their own driveway, and your driver takes you to reception. Tell us the resort name, or share a map pin for a private villa: several properties have similar names, and some sit down long lanes towards the beach.
Khao Lak centre and Nang Thong
The busiest stretch, around Bang La On, with shops, restaurants and dive centres along the highway and resorts on Nang Thong beach. About 1 hour 20 minutes.
Bang Niang
A few minutes north, with a long beach and the police patrol boat carried inland by the 2004 tsunami, now preserved where it came to rest. About 1 hour 25 minutes.
Khuk Khak and Pakarang Cape
Quieter beaches further north with many of the larger family resorts, then the headland at Pakarang. Allow 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes.
South Khao Lak coves
Resorts in the small bays below the Khao Lak–Lam Ru headland, reached a few minutes before the town centre. Quiet, with sunset views over the Andaman Sea.
Natai and Thai Mueang
Villa estates and boutique resorts on the long beaches south of Khao Lak, much closer to the airport at about 45 minutes. Share a map pin, as some villa gates are unsigned.

When to book your Khao Lak transfer
Khao Lak's season follows the Andaman Sea. From November to April the sea is calm and the weather mostly dry, with December to February the busiest months, so book early for Christmas and New Year. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain, wind and rough seas. Some smaller resorts and dive shops close or cut back for part of the low season, so check yours is open, while the larger resorts stay busy with visitors who like it green and quiet.
The Similan Islands National Park, the reason many divers come, closes for the monsoon from 16 May to 15 October and reopens in mid-October. Day boats leave from Thap Lamu pier, about 15 minutes south of central Khao Lak, early in the morning.
Loy Krathong falls on 24 November 2026, when candlelit baskets are floated on rivers, lagoons and the sea all over Thailand after dark. For arrivals, a late-morning landing puts you on the beach by mid-afternoon; an evening landing is fine with a driver who knows the road.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Khao Lak
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 1h 20min – 1h 40min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport taxi | 1¼–1¾ hours | Taxis and limousines from the counters in arrivals, at fixed fares by zone. Fine if you have not booked, but you queue and arrange it after the flight, and late-night fares are higher. |
| Shared minibus | 1½–2 hours | Shared minibuses run from the airport a few times a day and drop passengers at several hotels. Cheaper per seat, but you wait for the departure and for everyone else’s stops. |
| Taxi + long-distance bus | 2½–3½ hours | Buses to Takua Pa, Ranong and Surat Thani pass through Khao Lak but not the airport. Take a taxi to the main road or Phuket Bus Terminal 2 first, then two to three hours on board. |
| Rental car | 1¼–1¾ hours | Most international hire firms have desks at the airport. An easy road by day but unlit at night outside the towns, and you drive back to Phuket to return the car. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Khao Lak transfer suits
Divers and snorkellers
Khao Lak is the base for Similan Islands trips. Dive bags and camera cases fit easily in a minivan, and we can quote a later run to Thap Lamu pier too.
Families
A long drive is easier with child seats fitted before pickup and a stop when someone needs one. One price for the vehicle, and a minivan takes up to seven people.
Couples on a quiet beach holiday
Khao Lak’s resorts are spread out and calm. Your driver takes you to your own reception at Khuk Khak or Natai, not a shared drop at the nearest hotel.
Evening arrivals
With no public transport from the airport, a pre-booked driver is the simple way north after an evening landing, on a highway that is dark outside the towns.
Plan the rest of your Khao Lak stay
- Book Similan Islands trips before you travel if you are coming between December and February. Visitor numbers are capped each day, and boats leave Thap Lamu early, so avoid the morning after a late landing.
- Want to stretch your legs on the way? Ask for a short stop at the old Sarasin Bridge or a café in Thai Mueang; planned stops can be added to your quote.
- Takua Pa’s old town, north of Khao Lak, is worth an afternoon, and Khao Sok National Park is roughly 1½ to 2 hours inland for a night in the rainforest.
- Moving on to Phuket’s west coast after Khao Lak? We drive resort to resort to Patong, Kata and Bang Tao, and quote transfers across Thailand.
- Combining both coasts? Bangkok Airways flies between Phuket and Koh Samui, and if you have a night in Bangkok first, we cover Suvarnabhumi to Sukhumvit.
- For your flight home, leave Khao Lak about four hours before an international departure from Phuket and three hours before a domestic one, a little earlier from Pakarang or Bang Sak.
