Suvarnabhumi to Sukhumvit: car or train?
A private Suvarnabhumi to Sukhumvit transfer covers about 29 km, from the arrivals hall at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to the door of your hotel, condo or serviced apartment on the long avenue of hotels, malls and side streets east of the centre. In normal traffic it takes about 35 minutes, on the motorway and an elevated expressway, with every toll included.
The honest comparison is with the train. The Airport Rail Link runs from under the terminal into the city, and the BTS Skytrain then follows Sukhumvit Road east, so a light traveller staying near Nana, Asok or Phrom Phong station can do the trip for far less. It does mean two trains, escalators with your cases and a walk at the end.
A car makes sense when the station is not where you are going: a hotel deep inside a soi, a family with three cases and a pushchair, a landing after the last train at midnight, or a group whose fares add up to more than one vehicle. The price is fixed for the whole car and agreed before you fly.

The drive from BKK to Sukhumvit
Suvarnabhumi sits on the eastern edge of Bangkok, so most of the run in is on fast, raised roads. From the terminal your driver follows the airport access road north to Motorway 7, the Bangkok–Chonburi motorway, and heads west towards the city. Closer in, the motorway feeds straight onto the Si Rat Expressway, which carries you above the traffic to the Rama 9 exit. From there it is a few minutes south down Asok Montri Road, which is Sukhumvit Soi 21, to the junction with Sukhumvit Road by Terminal 21. Both are toll roads, and the tolls are included in your price, so there is nothing to pay on the way.
For Thong Lo and Ekkamai, drivers often come off earlier and enter the soi from New Phetchaburi Road at its northern end, which avoids Sukhumvit Road altogether. For On Nut and lower Sukhumvit, the driver chooses the line on the day.
The last kilometre is usually the slowest. Sukhumvit Road is congested for much of the day, the Asok junction is notorious at rush hour, and many sois are narrow, with parked cars on one side and motorbikes squeezing past. Odd-numbered sois branch off one side of the road and even numbers the other, and with the Skytrain pillars down the middle, reaching the far side can mean a loop.
Allow about 35 minutes in normal traffic. On weekday mornings from about 7 to 9 and evenings from 4 to 8, Fridays especially, the same trip can take up to an hour and a half, and a tropical downpour slows everything. Late at night the city end is clear and the drive can take under half an hour. Thailand drives on the left.

Meeting your driver at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi
Suvarnabhumi has one very large terminal, with arrivals on Level 2. After immigration, baggage reclaim and customs, you exit into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. Public taxis leave from Level 1 and the Airport Rail Link from the basement, but you won't need either.
Suvarnabhumi's arrivals hall is long, with numbered gates along its length, so we send the exact meeting gate with your driver's name and phone number before you fly. If your flight parks at the SAT-1 satellite concourse, an underground train links it to the main terminal, which can add a few minutes.
We track your flight, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land, which covers a long immigration queue.
For the trip back, your driver collects you from the hotel lobby and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Leave Sukhumvit about three hours before an international departure, and allow longer on weekday afternoons.

Where we drop off along Sukhumvit
The hotel stretch of Sukhumvit runs east from Nana for well over 10 km, and most hotels and serviced apartments sit on the numbered sois off the main road. Tell us the hotel name and soi number, or share a map pin for a condo, and your driver takes you to the entrance. Some long sois, such as Thong Lo, are quicker to enter from the far end.
Nana and the low-numbered sois
Busy hotel and nightlife streets at the western end, close to Nana BTS station and Bumrungrad International Hospital on Soi 3. Side streets are slow in the evening.
Asok (Soi 21) and Sois 11–23
The crossroads of the BTS and MRT, with Terminal 21 on the corner. Asok Montri Road leads straight here from the expressway, so it is usually the quickest area to reach.
Phrom Phong (Sois 24 and 39)
Hotels and family-sized serviced apartments around the Emporium mall and Benchasiri Park. Many apartment buildings sit a long way inside the soi.
Thong Lo (Soi 55) and Ekkamai (Soi 63)
Restaurants, bars and smart residences, with a long-established Japanese community. Both sois run through to New Phetchaburi Road, and Ekkamai has the Eastern Bus Terminal.
On Nut and Bang Na
Newer condos and hotels further east around On Nut BTS (Soi 77) and Bang Na. A little shorter in distance from the airport, and similar in time.

When to book your Sukhumvit transfer
Bangkok's high season runs from November to March, when the weather is at its driest and least humid and most long-haul holidaymakers arrive. Sukhumvit hotels fill around Christmas and New Year, and the roads are at their busiest in the run-up to the countdown.
Loy Krathong falls on 24 November 2026, an evening festival when people float candlelit baskets on rivers, canals and park lakes, so expect slower evening traffic near the parks. Songkran, the Thai New Year, runs from 13 to 15 April 2027. Many Bangkok residents travel home to their families, so the roads are often quieter than usual, but expect water fights in the nightlife streets: keep your phone and passport in a waterproof pouch.
From about May to October, the rainy season brings short, heavy storms in the afternoon and evening that flood low streets and stretch journey times. At any time of year the easiest arrival windows are late morning to mid-afternoon, late evening and weekends. Landing between 4 and 7pm on a weekday means the slowest drive in.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Sukhumvit
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 35 min – 1h 30min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport Rail Link + BTS | 50–70 minutes | City Line trains run from under the terminal to Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes, every 10–13 minutes from 05:30 to midnight. Then the BTS east to Nana, Asok or Phrom Phong. One change, escalators and busy carriages. |
| Airport Rail Link + MRT | 45–60 minutes | Leave the Rail Link at Makkasan, walk across to MRT Phetchaburi and ride one stop to Sukhumvit station at Asok. Quick for Asok hotels, but a long walk with cases at the change. |
| Public taxi | 35–90 minutes | From the rank on Level 1, after taking a queue ticket. The meter runs, and the airport surcharge and expressway tolls are added on top. Simplest if you can show the address in Thai. |
| Ride-hailing app | 35–90 minutes | Book in the app and find the car at the pickup point on Level 1. Prices rise at busy times, and a larger car for a family or golf bags is not always available. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Sukhumvit transfer suits
Late-night arrivals
Plenty of long-haul flights land after the last Airport Rail Link train at midnight. Your driver is in the arrivals hall whatever the hour, and the night drive in is the quickest of the day.
Families with luggage
No escalators or packed Skytrain carriages with cases and a pushchair. Child seats are fitted before pickup when you tell us the ages, and a minivan takes up to seven people.
Business travellers
Offices around Asok and the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center are close to the expressway exits. A quiet car for calls, and a driver who knows how to dodge the Asok junction.
Medical travellers
Bumrungrad International Hospital is on Soi 3. A door-to-door car avoids stairs and long walks after a flight, and a companion rides along in the same car at no extra cost.
Plan the rest of your Bangkok stay
- Once you have checked in, use the Skytrain for getting around: Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo, Ekkamai and On Nut stations all sit above Sukhumvit Road, and the trains beat the traffic at rush hour.
- Visit the Grand Palace and the riverside temples in the morning. From Sukhumvit, the BTS to Saphan Taksin and a Chao Phraya river boat is usually quicker than a car across the old city.
- Check which Bangkok airport your next flight uses. Many low-cost domestic flights leave from Don Mueang, north of the city, rather than Suvarnabhumi. We drive between Sukhumvit and both.
- Flying on to the islands? Bangkok Airways links Suvarnabhumi with Koh Samui, where we meet you for the short Samui Airport to Chaweng run. In Phuket we cover the drive north to Khao Lak.
- Heading to the coast after the city? Your driver can collect you from your Sukhumvit lobby for the motorway run to Pattaya, about two hours away.
- For your flight home, leave Sukhumvit about three hours before an international departure from Suvarnabhumi, and add 30 to 45 minutes on weekday afternoons and Friday evenings.
