Faro to Vilamoura, door to door

Vilamoura is one of the largest single holiday developments in Europe, about 2,000 hectares laid out around a marina that opened in 1974 and now has 825 berths. A private Faro to Vilamoura transfer covers the 25 km from Faro Airport in about 25 to 30 minutes, door to door, to a marina hotel, a golf villa or an apartment by the beach.

Public transport does exist. Vamus bus line 55 runs between the airport and Vilamoura via the university campus at Gambelas, and regional buses run along the coast from Faro bus station. But departures are limited, the stops are rarely at your hotel door, and Vilamoura is spread out, so the last kilometre with suitcases can be the longest.

A private car has one fixed price for the whole vehicle, which compares well with a taxi once there are three or four of you or a set of golf clubs. Vilamoura is also a handy base for the coast: Quinta do Lago is about 20 minutes east and Albufeira about 25 minutes west.

The drive from FAO to Vilamoura

Your driver leaves the airport on the EN125-10 and joins the EN125, the old coast road that links the towns of the Algarve, heading west past São João da Venda. A short stretch of the IC4 link road takes the car back onto the EN125 north of Almancil, and at the junction with the EN396 the route turns south, away from the market town of Loulé, towards Quarteira. On the edge of Quarteira the Estrada de Quarteira leads west into Vilamoura and down to the marina.

That is about 25 km and, in normal traffic, 25 to 30 minutes. The other option is the A22 Via do Infante, the motorway that runs a few kilometres inland across the Algarve from Castro Marim to Lagos. It is longer in kilometres but avoids the roundabouts and junctions of the EN125, and your driver may take it when the coast road is jammed. The A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025; any tolls your route does involve are included in your price.

Traffic is the variable. The EN125 carries heavy local traffic between Faro and Almancil, and in July and August, and at weekday rush hours, the trip can stretch to 40 minutes. A landing late in the evening usually means clear roads.

Vilamoura itself is spread out, with wide avenues and roundabouts linking the marina, the beaches, the golf courses and the residential areas. Most addresses are door to door. Some apartments right on the marina are reached on foot from the nearest road, so tell us the building name and your driver will stop as close as the car can get.

Meeting your driver at Faro Airport

Faro Airport has a single passenger terminal. Flights from the UK, Ireland and other countries outside the Schengen area go through passport control, where the EU's Entry/Exit System can add time. After baggage reclaim, walk out into the public arrivals hall on the ground floor, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. Private cars can only stop briefly at the kerb, so your driver then walks you to where the car is parked.

Faro Airport has one passenger terminal, so there is only one arrivals hall to find. If you fly in from the UK, Ireland or elsewhere outside the Schengen area, you go through passport control first, and the EU's Entry/Exit System can add time when several flights land together. Your driver waits in the public arrivals hall on the ground floor with your name on a sign.

Give us your flight number and we track it. A delay moves the pickup at no extra cost, and the 60 minutes of free waiting start from your actual landing time. You receive the driver's name and phone number before the trip.

For the trip back, your driver meets you at your hotel or villa entrance and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Vilamoura

Vilamoura is a planned resort rather than an old town, so most hotels, villas and apartment blocks have their own drop-off area. Give us the hotel or building name, or a map pin for a villa, and your driver will take you to the entrance. If you are joining a boat, tell us the pontoon and we will stop as close to it as the roads allow.

The marina

Room for 825 boats, including yachts up to 60 metres, ringed by hotels, apartments, restaurants and the casino. The busiest part of Vilamoura on summer evenings.

The beachfront hotels

Hotels and apartments along Praia da Marina, either side of the harbour entrance, and towards Praia da Falésia and its long run of ochre cliffs to the west.

Golf courses and villas

Vilamoura Golf runs five courses here, including the Old Course and Laguna, surrounded by villas and golf apartments. We drop at the villa or the clubhouse.

Quarteira

The neighbouring town to the east, with apartment blocks, a seafront promenade and a fish market. A short ride from the marina and an easy drop-off.

When to book your Vilamoura transfer

Vilamoura works all year. Golf runs through every month, helped by mild winters, and the marina, beaches and bars peak in July and August, when hotels are full and the EN125 and EN396 are at their slowest in the late afternoon and early evening.

The regional bus company, Vamus, runs its high-season service from 1 May to 31 October. Outside those months buses are fewer, which matters if you land in the evening: a pre-booked car is waiting whatever the timetable says.

Each July the Moto Clube de Faro holds its international motorcycle rally at Vale das Almas, right beside the airport, over four days (16 to 19 July in 2026). If you land that week, allow a little extra time on the airport roads.

Easter and the October half-term bring families back to the beaches and the marina restaurants. In those weeks, book your transfer when you book your flights. A morning or late-evening arrival usually means a quicker drive than a mid-afternoon one.

Vehicles, prices and what's included

You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.

Who the Vilamoura transfer suits

Golfers

Five courses in one resort, and a driver who can drop you at the clubhouse first. A minivan takes up to seven people with bags and trolleys.

Families

Child seats fitted before pickup, one price for the car, and no bus change with pushchairs. The beach hotels are a short drop from the marina.

Sailors and boat owners

Joining a yacht or handing one over? We take crew and kit to the marina, and time the return for the airport so nobody waits around with sails and bags.

Groups and celebrations

Stag and hen weekends, birthdays and weddings. Minibuses carry up to 16 people, so the whole group arrives together rather than in a convoy of taxis.

Plan the rest of your Vilamoura stay

  • Book tee times before you travel. Vilamoura Golf’s five courses take online bookings, and spring and autumn, the busiest golf months, tend to fill first.
  • Cerro da Vila, a Roman site with a small museum, sits close to the marina. Romans made garum, a fish sauce, here, and the remains of their baths survive.
  • Boat trips leave from the marina, including cave tours along the coast towards Albufeira. In July and August, book a day or two ahead.
  • Loulé’s Saturday market runs from 08:00 to 14:00, about 20 minutes inland by car. Arrive early for parking and the pick of the produce.
  • Moving on later? We quote transfers from Vilamoura to Albufeira and the western Algarve, and to other destinations in Portugal.
  • For the flight home, leave Vilamoura about two and a half hours before a European departure, a little more in July and August. With a non-EU passport, allow extra time for the Entry/Exit checks.

Faro Airport to Vilamoura: your questions

How long does it take to get from Faro to Vilamoura?

About 25 to 30 minutes for the 25 km from Faro Airport to the marina, along the EN125 and the EN396 through Quarteira. In July and August and at weekday rush hours, allow up to 40 minutes. Your driver may use the toll-free A22 motorway when the coast road is slow.

How much does a private transfer from Faro Airport to Vilamoura cost?

One fixed price for the whole vehicle, not per person. It depends on the size of vehicle, the date and time, and any stops you add on the way. Fuel, any tolls, waiting time and flight tracking are all included. Enter your trip above and we will email your price within 24 hours, with nothing to pay until you accept.

Is there a bus from Faro Airport to Vilamoura?

Yes. Vamus line 55 runs between the airport and Vilamoura via Gambelas, and regional buses run along the coast from Faro bus station. Departures are limited, more so outside the May to October high season, so check the Vamus timetable before you fly. Vilamoura has no railway station.

Can you drop us right at the marina?

Yes, at your hotel or apartment entrance. Some apartments directly on the quay are reached on foot from the nearest road, so tell us the building name and your driver will stop as close as possible. If you are joining a boat, give us the pontoon or berth and we will plan the nearest stop.

What happens if my flight to Faro is delayed?

We track your flight number, so the pickup moves with the delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. That covers passport control and the baggage hall. If the delay passes three hours, message us on WhatsApp: a delay that long can need a new booking, and we will help you sort it out.

Does the A22 motorway to Vilamoura still have tolls?

No. Tolls on the A22 Via do Infante were abolished from 1 January 2025, and the motorway is free along its whole length. It matters most if you plan to hire a car later. On your transfer it makes no difference to you, as any tolls on the route are included in the price.

Can you take us straight from the airport to a Vilamoura golf course?

Yes. Tell us the course and tee time when you book, and we will drop the group and the clubs at the clubhouse first. Your suitcases can stay in the vehicle if we are also taking you on to your hotel afterwards; add the waiting time to your quote.
