Lisbon to Comporta by private car
Comporta is the stretch of rice fields, pine woods and long, quiet beaches on the Alentejo coast, south of the Sado estuary. The Lisbon to Comporta transfer covers 118 km from Lisbon Airport and takes about 1 hour 35 minutes in normal traffic. Your driver meets you in arrivals, crosses the Tagus on the Vasco da Gama Bridge and follows the motorway south, before the last half hour on flat country roads.
There is no train to Comporta. Since September 2026 a coach runs twice a day from Lisbon down this coast, and there is the route via Setúbal and the Tróia ferry with a taxi at the end. Both work for a light traveller with time to spare.
Many visitors are heading to a villa or a small hotel down a sandy track, though, and a car to the door is the practical answer. The price is for the whole vehicle, so a family of five in a minivan pays one fare. We also drive to Tróia, Melides and the rest of the coast, and west from the airport to Cascais and the Estoril coast.

The drive from LIS to Comporta
From the airport your driver takes the A1 for less than a kilometre, then the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the longest bridge in the European Union, across the Tagus estuary towards Montijo. There is no bridge toll heading south: it is only charged on the way into Lisbon, and any tolls on the trip are included in your price.
South of the river, the A12 runs through the pine and cork country of the Setúbal peninsula to join the A2, the main motorway to the Algarve. Your driver leaves it near Alcácer do Sal, an old river town with a castle above the Sado, and follows the N253 west for about 25 km through the rice fields to Comporta village. For Carvalhal, Pego beach and Melides, the N261 continues south, parallel to the coast.
That is the line on the diagram: 118 km, about 1 hour 35 minutes. On summer Friday afternoons, when Lisbon empties towards the Alentejo and the Algarve, the bridge approaches and the A2 slow down and the drive can take 2 hours 15 minutes. Sunday evenings are slow in the other direction.
The other way south uses the car ferry from Setúbal to Tróia, a crossing of about 25 minutes, and then the N253-1 down the Tróia peninsula to Comporta. It is shorter on the map, but sailing times and summer queues at the ramp make it less predictable, so drivers usually stay on the motorway unless you ask for the crossing.
After dark the motorways are quiet and the run is quick. The final stretch is a straight, unlit country road, and your driver knows where the villa tracks turn off.

Meeting your driver at Lisbon Airport
All arriving flights use Terminal 1; Terminal 2 is a separate, departures-only building used by several low-cost airlines. After baggage reclaim and customs, walk into the Terminal 1 arrivals hall, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. The car is a short walk away in the terminal car park. If you can't see your driver, stay inside the hall and call or message the number we sent you.
Every flight into Lisbon arrives at Terminal 1, where your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign. Add your flight number when you book and we track it, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. Your driver’s name and phone number reach you before the trip.
For the return, your driver collects you from your villa or hotel and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Summer traffic back over the bridge can be heavy, so we suggest a pickup time when you book. If your flight leaves from Terminal 2, used by several low-cost airlines, tell us and you will be dropped at the right building.

Where we drop off around Comporta
The Comporta coast is spread out: a handful of villages, hotels in the pine woods and villas at the end of sandy tracks between the rice fields and the dunes. Satnav addresses here are often vague, so send us a map pin or the directions your host gave you, plus any gate code. For deep sand, some hosts meet the car at the paved road.
Comporta village and beach
Whitewashed houses, shops and restaurants where the N253 meets the N261, with Comporta beach a short drive west. Hotels and villas around the village are door to door.
Carvalhal and Pego beach
About 10 km south on the N261. Carvalhal has restaurants and guesthouses, and Pego is its beach, at the end of the road through the dunes.
Muda, Brejos and the pine woods
Hamlets in the pine woods around Comporta and Carvalhal, home to several design hotels and many private villas. Send a pin: entrances are often on unmarked tracks.
Tróia peninsula
The resort, marina and golf course on the sandspit north of Comporta, along the N253-1, facing Setúbal across the mouth of the Sado.
Melides
Village, lagoon and beach about 30 km south of Comporta on the N261, with newer resort and golf developments among the dunes and pines.

When to book your Comporta transfer
Comporta is a summer place. From June to September the hotels and beach restaurants are full, and in July and August villas book up months ahead, so book your transfer when you book the house. May and late September are quieter, warm enough for the beach and easier on the roads.
Traffic follows Lisbon's weekend rhythm. On summer Friday afternoons, and the evening before a public holiday, queues build on the Vasco da Gama Bridge approaches and the A2 southbound; on Sunday evenings they reverse. National holidays such as 10 June, 15 August and 5 October create long weekends that fill the coast. Landing in the morning, or after about 20:00, usually means a clear run.
From November to March the coast is very quiet, and some beach restaurants close or shorten their hours, so check before you plan a long lunch. The drive itself is at its quickest in these months.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Comporta
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 1h 35min – 2h 15min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Rede Expressos coach | 2½–3½ hours | Since September 2026 the Lisbon–Sines coach stops at Comporta, Carvalhal and Melides, with two departures a day from Lisbon, the last in the early evening. Metro first, then a walk or taxi at the end. |
| Train + Tróia ferry + taxi | 2½–3 hours | Metro and suburban train to Setúbal, a walk to the pier, the 15-minute catamaran to Tróia, then a taxi down the peninsula to Comporta. Three changes with luggage, but a lovely crossing in good weather. |
| Rental car | 1½–2¼ hours | Useful for exploring a spread-out coast, but you queue for the car after your flight, drive out through Lisbon traffic and over the bridge yourself, and find the villa track on your own. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Comporta transfer suits
Families renting a villa
One price for the car, child seats fitted before pickup, and a minivan with room for seven people, beach bags and a pushchair. No ferry pier or bus change with tired children.
Golfers
There are courses at Tróia and near Melides, both within reach of a Comporta base. Tell us how many players and golf bags are travelling, and we send a vehicle with room for them.
Weddings and house parties
Comporta’s estates and beach venues host summer weddings. Minibuses take up to 16 guests, and we can stagger pickups for guests landing on different flights.
Late arrivals
The last coach of the day leaves Lisbon in the early evening, and the ferry and taxi route gets harder after dark. A booked car drives you to the gate whatever time you land.
Plan your Comporta stay
- Arriving at a self-catering villa? Ask for a planned grocery stop on the way, for example in Alcácer do Sal, and we include it in your quote.
- Book beach restaurant tables for July and August, especially weekend lunches. The busiest beach restaurants at Comporta and Carvalhal fill up early.
- The stilt fishing piers at Carrasqueira, on the estuary close to Comporta, are a short drive away and at their most photogenic around sunset.
- Plan the trip home with a buffer: leave Comporta about 3½ hours before a European flight from Lisbon and 4 hours before a long-haul one, more on a summer Sunday.
- Spending a night or two in the capital first? Our Lisbon airport to city centre transfer breaks up a long-haul arrival, and we can collect you from your city hotel for the drive south.
- Carrying on to the Algarve? We quote coast-to-coast rides, and if you fly home from Faro we also drive to Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago.
