Faro Airport to Albufeira by private car

Albufeira recorded more overnight stays than anywhere else in the Algarve in 2025, and almost everyone arrives the same way: by plane into Faro, 45 km to the east. A private Faro Airport to Albufeira transfer takes about 40 minutes on the A22 motorway, from the arrivals hall at Faro Airport to the door of your hotel, apartment or villa, whether that is in the old town, on the Strip or out at Olhos de Água.

The public options are real but limited. The Vamus Aerobus, line 56, runs from the airport through Albufeira towards Portimão and Lagos, with more departures in the May to October high season. Trains stop at Albufeira-Ferreiras, about 6 km north of the town. With luggage, both usually end with a taxi.

A private car has one fixed price for the whole vehicle, so a family or a group of friends shares it rather than paying per seat, and it takes you to the door. Staying closer to the airport? Compare Faro to Vilamoura.

The drive from FAO to Albufeira

From the terminal, your driver takes the airport road and a short stretch of the EN125 to the IC4 link road, which runs north to the A22 Via do Infante, the motorway that crosses the Algarve from the Spanish border at Castro Marim to Lagos. Then it is about 27 km west on the A22, passing south of Loulé and close to Boliqueime and Paderne, to the Albufeira junction near Ferreiras. From there the EN395 runs south into town and ends at Avenida da Liberdade, just above the old town.

That is about 45 km and 40 minutes in normal traffic. The A22 has been toll-free along its whole length since 1 January 2025, and its old electronic toll gantries no longer charge, which matters if you hire a car later in your stay. On your transfer, any tolls on the route are included in the price anyway.

The slow part is the end. On summer afternoons and evenings the EN395 and the streets around the centre are busy, so allow up to an hour in July and August. Night arrivals usually have clear roads all the way.

Albufeira's old town is a tangle of steep lanes above the beach, and many are for pedestrians only. On 23 July 2026 the council also barred app-based ride-hail cars, such as Uber and Bolt, from the old town, the Rua da Oura area and the south side of Avenida da Liberdade. Tell us your hotel and your driver will stop at its door or at the nearest point the car can legally reach.

Meeting your driver at Faro Airport

Faro Airport has a single passenger terminal. Flights from the UK, Ireland and other countries outside the Schengen area go through passport control, where the EU's Entry/Exit System can add time. After baggage reclaim, walk out into the public arrivals hall on the ground floor, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. Private cars can only stop briefly at the kerb, so your driver then walks you to where the car is parked.

Faro Airport has a single terminal. Passengers from the UK, Ireland and other countries outside the Schengen area go through passport control, where the EU's Entry/Exit System can slow things down when several flights land at once. Once you have your bags, walk out into the public arrivals hall on the ground floor and look for your driver holding a sign with your name.

Add your flight number when you book and we track it: the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. Your driver's name and mobile number reach you before the trip, so you can message from the baggage hall.

For the trip back, your driver collects you at your hotel or apartment and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Albufeira

Albufeira is two towns in one: the old fishing town above the beach, with steep and partly pedestrian lanes, and the newer resort areas to the east around Areias de São João. Hotels and apartments on the main roads are door to door. For the old town, tell us your hotel and your driver will plan the nearest legal stop.

Old town and Praia dos Pescadores

The whitewashed centre above the fishermen’s beach. Outdoor escalators by the Pau da Bandeira viewpoint link the cliff top with the beach and the old town.

The Strip (Areias de São João)

Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro, lined with bars, restaurants and open-air clubs, and the hotels and apartments around it, about 2 km east of the old town.

Albufeira Marina

The marina on the west side of town, with apartment buildings, hotels and restaurants around the basin. Most buildings here have easy door-to-door access by car.

Olhos de Água and Praia da Falésia

Quieter beach areas east of Albufeira, including the clifftop resorts above Falésia beach. About 36 km from the airport, so a few minutes closer.

When to book your Albufeira transfer

Albufeira's season is long, with a sharp peak. The municipality has about 44,000 residents, but in summer, and again at Christmas and New Year, the number of people in town rises to around 300,000. In July and August, expect the slowest roads into the centre in the afternoon and evening, and allow up to an hour from the airport.

The regional bus company, Vamus, runs its high-season service from 1 May to 31 October, so the Aerobus runs more often then. Outside those months departures thin out, and an evening landing usually means a taxi or a booked car.

New Year's Eve is one of Albufeira's busiest nights of the year. If you are flying in for it, book your transfer when you book your flights.

Each July the Moto Clube de Faro holds its international motorcycle rally at Vale das Almas, beside the airport, over four days (16 to 19 July in 2026). Allow a little extra time if you land that week. Spring and autumn are calmer, and the drive is usually a straight 40 minutes.

Vehicles, prices and what's included

You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.

Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.

Who the Albufeira transfer suits

Families

Child seats fitted before pickup, and one price for the car. A minivan takes up to seven people with suitcases and a pushchair, with no bus change in Faro.

Groups of friends

Birthdays, stag and hen weekends, and holidays on the Strip. A minibus carries up to 16, so the group travels together and arrives at the same time.

Late arrivals

Evening and night flights land when buses are few or finished. Your driver tracks the flight, so you are met however late the plane comes in.

Old town stays

Hotels and apartments in the old town lanes are hard to find after dark. Your driver plans the nearest legal stop in advance, so you are not hunting for the door with your cases.

Plan the rest of your Albufeira stay

  • Ask your hotel how close a car can get before you fly, especially in the old town, where many lanes are pedestrian and some streets have access restrictions.
  • Save your legs on the cliff: outdoor escalators by the Pau da Bandeira viewpoint run down towards Praia dos Pescadores, and Praia do Túnel has a panoramic lift.
  • Staying in the old town but planning a night on the Strip? Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro is about 2 km east, a short taxi ride rather than a walk in the heat.
  • Want a quieter few days afterwards? We quote hotel-to-hotel transfers to Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago, and to other places in Portugal.
  • For the flight home, leave Albufeira about two and a half hours before a European departure, closer to three in July and August. With a non-EU passport, add time for the Entry/Exit checks.

Faro Airport to Albufeira: your questions

How long does it take from Faro Airport to Albufeira?

About 40 minutes for the 45 km from Faro Airport to the centre of Albufeira, almost all of it on the A22 motorway. In July and August, and on summer evenings when the roads into town are busy, allow up to an hour. Olhos de Água and the Falésia hotels are a few minutes closer.

How much does a private transfer from Faro Airport to Albufeira cost?

You pay one fixed price for the whole vehicle, not per person. It depends on the vehicle size, the date and time, and any extra stops, such as a supermarket on the way. Fuel, any tolls, waiting time and flight tracking are included. Enter your trip above and we will email your price within 24 hours; nothing is charged until you accept it.

Is there a bus from Faro Airport to Albufeira?

Yes. The Vamus Aerobus, line 56, runs from the airport through Albufeira to Portimão and Lagos, with more departures from May to October than in winter. Alternatively, take the city bus to Faro station and a train to Albufeira-Ferreiras, 6 km from town. Check timetables before you fly, especially for evening arrivals.

Can the car drive to my hotel in Albufeira old town?

Hotels on the roads around the old town get door-to-door service. Many lanes in the centre are pedestrian, so for those addresses your driver stops at the nearest point a car can legally reach, usually a few minutes on foot. Send us the hotel name and we will plan the stop before you land.

What happens if my flight to Faro is delayed?

Add your flight number when you book and we track it, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost. Your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land, which covers passport control and baggage. If a delay runs past three hours, message us on WhatsApp: a delay that long can need a new booking, and we will help you rearrange it.

Can I still take an Uber or Bolt into Albufeira?

You can book one, but since 23 July 2026 the council has barred app-based ride-hail cars from the old town, the Rua da Oura area and the south side of Avenida da Liberdade, citing congestion and emergency access. Drivers may drop you at the edge of those zones. A pre-booked transfer goes to the nearest point the rules allow for your hotel.

Do you also go to Olhos de Água and Praia da Falésia?

Yes. The clifftop resorts above Praia da Falésia and the village of Olhos de Água are about 36 km from Faro Airport, east of Albufeira, and take 35 to 50 minutes. Enter your hotel or villa address in the form and we will quote it the same way.
