SFO to San Francisco: car, BART or taxi?
San Francisco International is 23 km (14 miles) south of the city, in San Mateo County. Getting from SFO to San Francisco by private car takes about 25 minutes with clear roads and up to 50 minutes at rush hour, door to door from your terminal at San Francisco Airport to your hotel.
BART is the honest alternative. Trains leave from the International Terminal and reach Powell Street, by Union Square, in about 29 minutes, so for one person with a carry-on staying near a station, the train is hard to beat. The car is better when the hotel is up Nob Hill, at Fisherman's Wharf or in the Marina, when three or four people would pay more in fares and taxis from the station, when children need seats, or when you land after the last train.
The price is fixed for the whole vehicle and agreed before you travel. Heading on to wine country? We also quote SFO to Napa Valley, directly from the airport or from your city hotel.

The drive from SFO to San Francisco
From the terminals, the airport roads lead straight onto US-101 (the Bayshore Freeway) north. It runs along the edge of the bay past South San Francisco and Brisbane, under San Bruno Mountain, and past Candlestick Point into the city. Near the end, your driver takes either the I-280 spur to King Street, past Oracle Park and the Caltrain terminal, or stays on 101 to the downtown exits in SoMa. To Union Square that is about 23 km (14 miles).
There are no tolls between SFO and the city. The Bay Bridge toll is collected only from drivers heading west into San Francisco from Oakland, and this route does not cross it.
Traffic is the variable. With clear roads, late at night or at weekends, the drive takes about 25 minutes. On weekday mornings northbound 101 slows towards the city, and in the afternoons the streets of SoMa fill with traffic queuing for the Bay Bridge, which can make the last few kilometres slow. Allow up to 50 minutes at those times.
The city itself is where a driver earns their keep. Streets on Nob Hill and Russian Hill are steep, many downtown streets are one-way, and the cable cars share Powell, California and Hyde Streets with cars. Your driver uses the hotel's entrance or loading zone, so you are not hauling cases up a hill from the nearest BART station.

Meeting your driver at SFO
SFO has four terminals: Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminals 2 and 3, and the International Terminal, linked by the free AirTrain. Licensed car services pick up in zones the airport designates. At Terminals 1, 2 and 3, that is a white kerbside zone on the arrivals or departures level, at a spot your driver confirms by message. At the International Terminal, it is the yellow zone on the centre island outside Arrivals and Baggage Claim.

For the return, your driver waits up to 15 minutes at your hotel.

Where we drop off in San Francisco
Every address in the city is door to door, from the downtown hotels to the houses of Pacific Heights. Tell us the hotel, office or address, and for a private home, any parking or access notes. Some streets are very steep or narrow, so your driver stops at the closest safe point to the door.
Union Square and Nob Hill
The main hotel district, with the grand hotels of Nob Hill a steep climb above it. Your driver drops you at the entrance rather than at the bottom of the hill.
SoMa and Moscone Center
Hotels and offices south of Market Street around the Moscone Center, where most of the large conferences take place. Drop-off at the hall or hotel entrance.
Financial District and Embarcadero
Office towers and waterfront hotels along the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building, where ferries leave for Sausalito, Oakland and Vallejo.
Fisherman’s Wharf and North Beach
The waterfront hotels around Pier 39 and the Italian cafés of North Beach. The James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27 is close by.
Marina, Pacific Heights and the Presidio
Quieter neighbourhoods in the north-west of the city, well away from BART. The car is the simplest way to reach them with luggage.

When to book your San Francisco transfer
San Francisco is a year-round business city, and its busiest weeks are set by the conference calendar. The J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference fills downtown hotels from 11 to 14 January 2027, the Game Developers Conference takes over the Moscone Center from 1 to 5 March 2027, and Dreamforce returns from 21 to 23 September 2027. Book early for those weeks, as cars and hotel rooms run short.
The weather surprises many visitors. Summer is often cool and foggy, especially in the west and north of the city, while September and October tend to bring the warmest, clearest days. Pack layers whatever the month.
Low cloud on summer mornings can delay arrivals at SFO. We track your flight, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost. Landing in the middle of the day or after 7pm usually misses the worst of the traffic.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach San Francisco
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 25–50 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| BART | 29 minutes to Powell Street + walk | From the station in the International Terminal, reached by AirTrain from the other terminals. Direct to Powell Street and the Financial District, but you finish on foot with your bags, sometimes uphill. |
| Taxi | 25–50 minutes + the queue | Metered taxis from the rank outside each terminal. Straightforward when the queue is short, but the fare is not fixed in advance and rises with slow traffic. |
| App ride (Uber, Lyft) | 30–60 minutes including pickup | Picked up from the signed ride app zones at each terminal, which can be a walk from baggage claim. Prices change with demand, especially when several long-haul flights land together. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the San Francisco transfer suits
Conference visitors
Moscone Center and the downtown hotels are 25 to 50 minutes from the gate. A booked car takes you straight to the hall or hotel, with time to take calls on the way.
Families and small groups
Child seats fitted when you tell us the ages, and one price for the car. For three or four people, it often compares well with BART fares plus a taxi from the station.
Late-night arrivals
The last BART train towards the city leaves SFO around midnight. A pre-booked driver waits for your flight whatever time it lands.
Hotels away from BART
Nob Hill, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Marina and Pacific Heights are all a walk or a second ride from the nearest station. The car takes you to the door.
Plan the rest of your San Francisco stay
- Book Alcatraz tickets before you travel rather than hoping for space on the day, especially in summer. Ferries to the island leave from Pier 33, near Fisherman’s Wharf.
- Cable cars are a ride, not just a way to get around. Lines are shortest early in the morning at the Powell and Market turntable, near Union Square.
- Pack layers. A warm afternoon downtown can turn into a cold, foggy evening by the Golden Gate Bridge, even in July.
- Staying a few days and then heading north? We quote hotel-to-hotel rides to Napa Valley, Sonoma and Lake Tahoe, where Reno is the nearest airport if you fly in separately.
- Going on to Southern California? It is a short flight, and drivers meet arrivals at LAX too: see LAX to Beverly Hills for the Westside hotels.
- For your flight home, leave downtown about two and a half hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international one. Add time at weekday rush hours, when 101 is slow in both directions.
