SFO to Napa by private car: how it works
Napa Valley begins about 93 km (58 miles) north-east of San Francisco's airport. A private SFO to Napa transfer reaches downtown Napa in about 1 hour 25 minutes with clear roads, Yountville in around an hour and a half, and St Helena or Calistoga, further north, in 1¾ to 2 hours. Your driver meets you at San Francisco Airport and takes you over the bay to the door of your hotel or estate.
There is no direct public transport. The usual route is BART to the East Bay and a VINE bus to Napa, about 2½ to 3 hours with luggage, and the bus does not run on Sundays. A rental car works, but someone has to drive after the tastings, and the first leg crosses the Bay Area at the end of a long flight.
The price is per vehicle, so it is shared by everyone in the car, and bridge tolls are included. Spending a few days in the city first? See SFO to San Francisco; we also quote hotel-to-hotel rides from the city to the valley.

The drive from SFO to Napa Valley
The usual route crosses the bay. From the airport your driver takes US-101 north into San Francisco and then the I-80 east over the Bay Bridge, through the tunnel on Yerba Buena Island to Oakland. The I-80 then follows the eastern shore of the bay past Emeryville, Berkeley and Richmond, crosses the Carquinez Bridge into Vallejo, and hands over to SR-29, which runs north through American Canyon into Napa. That is about 93 km (58 miles) to downtown Napa.
The other option is the Golden Gate Bridge: through San Francisco on 101, across the bridge and north through Marin County, then east on SR-37 along the edge of San Pablo Bay and up through the vineyards of Carneros. At about 105 km it is a little longer, but it is the more scenic line and handy for Carneros or when the I-80 is jammed. Your driver picks between the two on the day.
Bay Area bridge tolls are collected in one direction only. Northbound you pay no toll on the Bay Bridge or the Golden Gate, but the Carquinez Bridge charges eastbound; on the way back, the Bay Bridge charges westbound into San Francisco. Every toll is included in your price.
Traffic sets the time. With clear roads it is about 1 hour 25 minutes to downtown Napa. On weekday afternoons the I-80 through Berkeley and Richmond is slow, and on Friday afternoons in summer and harvest season the whole trip can take 2¼ hours. Inside the valley, SR-29 is busy on weekends, and drivers often use the quieter Silverado Trail on the eastern side.

Meeting your driver at SFO
SFO has four terminals: Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminals 2 and 3, and the International Terminal, linked by the free AirTrain. Licensed car services pick up in zones the airport designates. At Terminals 1, 2 and 3, that is a white kerbside zone on the arrivals or departures level, at a spot your driver confirms by message. At the International Terminal, it is the yellow zone on the centre island outside Arrivals and Baggage Claim.

You receive your driver's name and phone number before you fly. Add your flight number and we track it: the pickup moves with delays at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. For the return to SFO, your driver collects you from your hotel and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Napa Valley
We drive to any hotel, inn, private house or winery in Napa County. Many estates and villas sit at the end of long private drives with gates, so send the full address, gate code and a phone number when you book. For a winery, give the name and your appointment time, and your driver will find the right entrance.
Downtown Napa

Yountville
A small town known for its restaurants, about 15 km north of downtown Napa on SR-29. Allow around 1½ hours from the airport.
Oakville, Rutherford and St Helena
The heart of the valley, lined with famous estates on SR-29 and the Silverado Trail. St Helena is about 123 km from SFO.
Calistoga
The northern end of the valley, known for its hot springs and spas, about 136 km and 1¾ to 2 hours from the airport.

When to book your Napa Valley transfer
Napa Valley is busy all year, but harvest, roughly August to October, is the peak: the grapes are picked, the wineries are at their liveliest and hotels fill, especially at weekends. Summer days in the valley are hot and dry, much warmer than foggy San Francisco.
BottleRock Napa Valley, the music festival, takes over downtown Napa from 28 to 30 May 2027, when hotels across the valley book up months ahead. Holiday weekends, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, are also busy on SR-29.
Winter and early spring are quieter, cooler and greener, with wild mustard in flower between the rows of vines and easier tasting appointments. If you can choose your flight, landing late in the morning or at midday avoids the afternoon traffic on the I-80. We track your flight, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Napa Valley
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 1h 25min – 2h 15min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| BART + VINE bus | 2½–3 hours | BART from the International Terminal to El Cerrito del Norte, about an hour, then VINE Route 29 to Napa, about another hour. Monday to Saturday only, with no Sunday service. |
| Rental car | 1½–2¼ hours + collection | Flexible for touring, but you drive across the Bay Area after a long flight, and someone in the group cannot really taste. The wineries are spread out along busy SR-29 and the Silverado Trail. |
| App ride or taxi | 1½–2¼ hours | Possible for the whole distance, but prices change with demand, you wait at the pickup zone with your bags, and arranging the long ride back from the valley is less predictable. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Napa Valley transfer suits
Couples on a wine weekend
Land, be driven straight to the valley and start with dinner rather than a rental desk. Nobody has to stay sober for the drive.
Wedding guests and groups
Napa is a favourite place for weddings. A minibus seats 8 to 16, and we can arrange separate cars for guests landing on different flights.
Company retreats
Valley resorts host off-site meetings all year. Fixed prices per vehicle make it easy to bring a team in from SFO in one or two vehicles.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup when you tell us the ages. A minivan takes up to seven people with luggage, and the price is the same however many ride.
Plan the rest of your Napa Valley stay
- Book tasting appointments before you travel. Some wineries limit daily visitors under their permits, and sit-down tastings start at set times.
- Plan two or three wineries a day, not more. Most tastings take at least 90 minutes, and you need time between them on the road.
- Want to visit a winery on the way in? Add it to your quote as a planned stop, and your luggage stays locked in the car while you taste.
- Spending a night in San Francisco on the way home? We quote valley-to-city transfers, and from there it is a short ride to the airport.
- Heading for the mountains next? Lake Tahoe is closer to Reno than to SFO: see Reno to Lake Tahoe or our other transfers in the USA.
- For your flight home, leave Napa about three and a half hours before a domestic departure and four hours before an international one. From St Helena or Calistoga, add another half hour.
