Reno to Lake Tahoe: which shore, which road

Lake Tahoe is big, and the drive from Reno to Lake Tahoe depends on which shore you are staying on. This page is about the most direct run: from Reno-Tahoe International over the Mount Rose Highway to Incline Village on the north-east shore, 52 km (32 miles) and about 55 minutes in normal conditions. We also drive to every other part of the lake, and the times are below.

Your driver meets you in baggage claim, loads skis or lake luggage, and handles the mountain pass, chain controls included. The price is fixed for the whole vehicle, so a family or a group shares it.

Shared shuttles serve both ends of the lake from the airport. They suit a solo traveller in no hurry, but you book a seat on a set departure and share the ride with other passengers' stops. A private car leaves when your bags arrive and goes straight to your door, whether that is a lakefront house, a ski condo or a casino hotel at Crystal Bay. Skiing Utah too? The drive from RNO to Lake Tahoe

From the airport your driver heads south through Reno on I-580/US-395, then turns west onto the Mount Rose Highway (SR 431) in the south of the city. The road climbs steadily through the Galena area, past the Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe base area at 8,260 feet, to Mount Rose Summit at 8,911 feet (2,716 m). NDOT describes it as the highest pass in the Sierra Nevada that stays open all year. From the top, a series of hairpins with a scenic overlook drops to Incline Village and SR 28 by the lake.

In winter, Nevada applies a stricter rule on this road than on many others. When chain restrictions are in place on SR 431, only four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles with snow tyres, or vehicles fitted with chains, may continue. Your driver checks conditions before leaving and travels in line with whatever restrictions are in force.

If Mount Rose is closed or slow, the alternative is I-80 west along the Truckee River to Truckee, then down to the north shore. It is longer for Incline Village but the natural route for Truckee, Northstar, Tahoe City and Palisades Tahoe, which are in California, where Caltrans chain controls apply. For South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, the route runs south to Carson City and over US-50 to the lake, about 89 km, and NDOT applies the same four-wheel-drive-or-chains rule between Carson City and Glenbrook.

There are no toll roads on any of these routes. Snowstorms, holiday weekends and summer weekend traffic around the lake are what stretch the drive towards 90 minutes.

Meeting your driver at Reno-Tahoe Airport

Reno-Tahoe has one terminal with two concourses, B and C. Your driver meets you in baggage claim with a sign showing your name. All commercial pickups, including pre-booked cars and limousines, use the ground transportation loop outside Door D, north of baggage claim, so the car is a short walk away.

Reno-Tahoe International has one terminal with two concourses, B and C, about three miles south-east of downtown Reno. Your driver waits in baggage claim with a sign showing your name, then walks you out through Door D, north of baggage claim, where all commercial pickups, including pre-booked cars, use the ground transportation loop.

Add your flight number and we track it: the pickup moves with delays at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. For the return, your driver collects you from your hotel or home and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. In winter, allow extra time for chain controls on the way down.

Where we drop off around Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe straddles the Nevada-California line, and its shores are an hour or more apart by road. Tell us the town and address when you book and your driver takes the right route: Mount Rose for the north-east shore, I-80 for Truckee and the north-west shore, and US-50 for the south. Every address is door to door.

Incline Village

The Nevada town on the north-east shore, around 6,350 feet, home to Diamond Peak ski area and lakefront hotels. About 55 minutes from the airport over Mount Rose.

Crystal Bay and Kings Beach

Casino hotels right on the state line at Crystal Bay, then the California beach town of Kings Beach just beyond. About 1 hour from the airport.

Truckee and Northstar

The old railroad town of Truckee and the Northstar resort village, reached on I-80. About 50 minutes to Truckee and an hour to Northstar in normal conditions.

Tahoe City and Palisades Tahoe

The north-west shore and Olympic Valley, via I-80 and Truckee. Allow about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, more in chain controls.

South Lake Tahoe and Stateline

Heavenly, the Stateline casinos and South Lake Tahoe, about 89 km via Carson City and US-50. Allow about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes.

When to book your Lake Tahoe transfer

Tahoe has two high seasons. In winter, Diamond Peak, above Incline Village, plans to open for 2026/27 in early December, and Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, on the drive itself, calls itself one of the first resorts to open and one of the last to close. Christmas to New Year and the US holiday weekends in January and February are the busiest arrival times, and storms can bring chain controls to the pass at short notice.

Summer runs from June to September, when the lake is the draw. The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival plays on an outdoor stage at Sand Harbor, a few minutes south of Incline Village; the 2026 season ran from 3 July to 23 August, and 2027 dates are not yet published. Summer weekends, especially around the Fourth of July holiday, bring the heaviest traffic on the lake roads.

Spring and autumn are quieter, although an early or late storm can still bring snow to the Mount Rose Highway. Whatever the month, we track your flight and move the pickup with any delay.

Vehicles, prices and what's included

You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.

Who the Lake Tahoe transfer suits

North shore skiers

Diamond Peak is above Incline Village, Mt. Rose is on the way, and Northstar is about an hour from the airport. Bring the skis; we size the vehicle to fit.

Summer lake visitors

Lakefront houses, beach towns and the Shakespeare festival at Sand Harbor. A minivan takes up to seven with luggage, paddleboard bags and child seats.

Groups and lake-house rentals

Big rental homes are common around the lake. A minibus takes 8 to 16 people, so the whole party arrives together for one fixed price.

Late arrivals

An evening landing means a mountain pass in the dark, sometimes in snow. Your driver knows the road, and the pickup moves if your flight is late.

Plan the rest of your Lake Tahoe stay

  • Incline Village sits at about 6,350 feet and Mount Rose Summit at 8,911 feet, more than 4,000 feet above Reno. Drink water and take the first day gently.
  • Stocking a lake house? Ask for a supermarket stop in Reno before the climb, and we include the time in your quote.
  • Want Shakespeare at Sand Harbor? Book festival tickets as soon as the season is announced, as summer weekend performances on the lakeside stage are popular.
  • Staying on the south shore? Tell us, so your driver takes US-50 via Carson City rather than the Mount Rose Highway.
  • For your flight home, leave Incline Village about two and a half hours before a domestic departure, and allow an extra hour when chain controls are forecast.
  • Flying on in California? We drive San Francisco airport to the city and SFO to Napa Valley, and quote across the United States.

Reno-Tahoe Airport to Lake Tahoe: your questions

How long is the drive from Reno to Lake Tahoe?

It depends on the shore. Incline Village on the north-east shore is about 55 minutes for the 52 km (32 miles) over the Mount Rose Highway. Truckee and Northstar take about an hour on I-80, Tahoe City a little longer, and South Lake Tahoe about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes via US-50. Snow and chain controls add time.

How much is a private transfer from Reno to Lake Tahoe?

One fixed price for the whole vehicle, not per person. It depends on which part of the lake you are going to, the vehicle size, the date and time, and any stops. Fuel and waiting time are included, so a slow day on the pass does not change what you pay. Enter your trip above and we will email your price within 24 hours.

Is the North Lake Tahoe Express or a taxi a better option?

For one person on a fixed schedule, the shared shuttle is the lower-cost choice; it leaves from Door D and should be booked a day ahead. Taxis wait outside the D doors too. A private car makes sense for families, groups and anyone with ski gear: it leaves when you land and drives to your door, with the price set in advance.

What happens if the Mount Rose Highway needs chains or closes?

When Nevada has chain restrictions on SR 431, only four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles with snow tyres, or cars with chains, may continue. Your driver checks NDOT conditions before leaving. If the pass is closed or very slow, the route switches to I-80 via Truckee, which adds time but not cost.

Do you go to South Lake Tahoe and Heavenly?

Yes. South Lake Tahoe and Stateline are about 89 km from the airport via Carson City and US-50, usually 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. Tell us the hotel or address when you book, so we plan that route rather than the Mount Rose Highway to the north shore.

What if my flight into Reno is delayed?

Add your flight number when you book and we track it, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost. Your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. If the delay runs past three hours or the flight diverts, message us on WhatsApp: under our policy that can need a new booking, and we will help you rearrange it.

Can you carry skis, snowboards and summer gear?

Yes. Tell us how many people and how many ski, snowboard or golf bags you have, and we send a vehicle with room for them. A minivan takes up to seven people with luggage, and a minibus groups of 8 to 16. For long items such as paddleboards, give us the length.
