Rio airport to Copacabana by private car
Almost every long-haul flight to Rio lands at Rio de Janeiro Galeão, on Ilha do Governador in Guanabara Bay, about 20 km north of the city centre. Getting from Rio airport to Copacabana means a 23 km drive across the north of the city and under the mountains to the beach: about 35 minutes on clear roads, and up to an hour and a quarter at rush hour.
A private transfer takes the guesswork out of that first hour. Your driver meets you in arrivals, loads the bags and drives straight to your hotel, whether it faces the sea on Avenida Atlântica or sits a few blocks back in Ipanema or Leblon. The price is fixed for the whole car, so a family or a group of friends pays the same as a couple.
There is no train from Galeão. Public transport means a BRT bus and then the metro, which works with a backpack and is hard going with two suitcases after an overnight flight. If Rio is the start of a longer trip, see our guide to airport transfers in Brazil.

The drive from GIG to Copacabana & Ipanema
From Terminal 2 the car leaves Ilha do Governador on Estrada do Galeão and joins the Linha Vermelha (RJ-071), the expressway that is the airport's main road into the city. It runs south along the edge of Guanabara Bay, with a long stretch over the water, past Ilha do Fundão and its university campus, then through São Cristóvão and onto viaducts above Rio Comprido.
From there the usual way to the beaches is the Rebouças Tunnel, 2.8 km of twin tunnels through the mountains in two sections, with a short open stretch at Cosme Velho. It comes out by the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon. For Copacabana the driver continues through Humaitá and into the grid of streets behind the beach; for Ipanema and Leblon, round the lagoon. That is the line on the diagram below, about 23 km. If the tunnel is blocked, the driver can go round through the city centre and Botafogo instead.
Staying in Barra da Tijuca or Recreio? The driver turns off onto the Linha Amarela, a toll expressway through the Covanca tunnel to the west of the city. Any tolls are included in your price.
Traffic, not distance, sets the time. The Linha Vermelha is often slow around Ilha do Fundão on weekday mornings and evenings, when the 35-minute run can stretch to 75 minutes. Weekends and late evenings are usually quickest.
The UK Foreign Office advises against travelling by road during heavy rain in Rio, when streets can flood quickly. If a storm breaks as you land, your driver waits for it to ease or picks a drier route.

Meeting your driver at Rio Galeão Airport
Arrivals at Galeão come out on the ground floor (level 0) of Terminal 2, with separate exits for international and domestic flights. After passport control, baggage reclaim and customs, walk out into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. Ignore anyone else offering a ride. If you can't see your driver, stay inside the hall and call or message the number we sent you.
Rio's arrivals hall can be busy with people offering rides. Walk past them: your driver's name and mobile number reach you before you travel, and they will be holding a sign with your name.
Add your flight number when you book and we track it. If the flight is late, the pickup moves with it at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land, which covers passport control and the baggage belt. If a delay runs past three hours, message us on WhatsApp: a delay that long can need a new booking, and we will help you rearrange it.
For the trip home, your driver collects you from your hotel lobby and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon
Every hotel and apartment in the South Zone is door to door. Copacabana’s seafront hotels line Avenida Atlântica, a dual carriageway; on Sundays and public holidays one side is closed to cars for walkers and cyclists, so the driver uses the open side or a side street. For apartments, give us the building name and number as well as the street.
Leme
The quieter northern end of the beach, below the Leme hill and its old fort. Door-to-door drop-off on Avenida Atlântica or the streets just behind.
Central Copacabana
The long middle stretch of the 4 km beach, with hotels on the seafront and on Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, one block inland. Three metro stations serve the area.
Posto 6 and Arpoador
The southern end, by the Copacabana Fort and the rocks of Arpoador, where Copacabana meets Ipanema. A handy base for both beaches.
Ipanema
Hotels on Avenida Vieira Souto facing the sea and in the grid of streets behind it, around Praça General Osório and its metro station.
Leblon
The western end of the same beach, past the Jardim de Alah canal: smaller hotels, restaurants and apartment buildings on calmer residential streets.

When to book your Copacabana & Ipanema transfer
Rio's high season runs from December to March, the southern summer: hot, humid and busy, with the city's biggest moments packed in. New Year's Eve on Copacabana beach draws around two million people for the fireworks. Expect road closures around Copacabana on 31 December; if you land that day, aim to reach your hotel early and be ready to walk the last stretch. We confirm the arrangements once the city publishes its plan.
Carnival 2027 runs from Saturday 6 to Tuesday 9 February, with Ash Wednesday on 10 February. Street parties close roads across the South Zone in the weeks around it, and hotels fill months ahead, so book your transfer when you book your flights.
Summer is also the rainy season in Rio, from November to March. Storms are often short but heavy, and they can slow the Linha Vermelha to a crawl.
From June to August the weather is drier and milder, the beaches are calmer and the roads are usually quicker.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Copacabana & Ipanema
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 35 min – 1h 15min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| BRT bus + metro | 1½–2 hours | The TransCarioca BRT stops at both terminals and runs to Vicente de Carvalho, where you change to the metro for Copacabana and Ipanema. Low cost, but two vehicles, stairs and crowds with your luggage. |
| Airport taxi | 35–75 minutes | Regular and executive taxi companies have desks in the Terminal 2 arrivals hall and charge by meter or by a fare table set by the city. You queue at the desk and take the next car. |
| Ride-hailing app | 35–75 minutes plus pickup | Uber has marked pickup points, on the departures level for international arrivals. The UK Foreign Office warns of unregulated drivers posing as app drivers at airports, so check the plate and name. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Copacabana & Ipanema transfer suits
First-time visitors
You land in a big, unfamiliar city after a long flight. A named driver, a fixed price and a straight run to the beach make the first hour simple.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup (tell us the ages), and one price for the car. A minivan takes up to seven people with beach bags, buggies and suitcases.
Carnival and New Year groups
Minibuses for 8 to 16 people, so the whole group travels together. Tell us about friends arriving on different flights and we will plan each pickup.
Night arrivals
Your driver tracks the flight and waits whatever the hour, so there is no queue at the taxi desk and no app pickup point to find when you are tired.
Plan the rest of your Rio stay
- Save Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf for the first clear morning. The Sugarloaf cable car starts at Praia Vermelha in Urca, a short taxi ride from Copacabana.
- Take only what you need to the beach. The UK Foreign Office says thieves in Brazilian cities target mobile phones, particularly between 4pm and 9pm, so leave passports and spare cards in the hotel safe.
- On Sundays and holidays one side of Avenida Atlântica closes to cars and fills with walkers, runners and cyclists. It is the ideal day for a long seafront stroll.
- Many domestic flights use Santos Dumont, the city airport on the bay by the centre, not Galeão. Check your ticket; the drive between the two is about 20 km.
- Flying on within South America? We also run Ezeiza Airport to Buenos Aires and Lima Airport to Miraflores transfers on the same fixed-price terms.
- For the flight home, leave Copacabana or Ipanema about three hours before an international departure from Galeão, and allow extra time on weekday evenings and before Carnival weekends.
