Hong Kong Airport to Central: Airport Express or car?
Getting from Hong Kong Airport to Central by private car takes about 40 minutes for the 35 km from Chek Lap Kok, across the Tsing Ma Bridge and under Victoria Harbour. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Hong Kong International Airport and drops you at the door of your hotel, office tower or apartment building, including the steep streets of the Mid-Levels.
To be honest about the alternative: the Airport Express is excellent. Trains run about every 10 minutes and reach Hong Kong station, under the IFC towers in Central, in 24 minutes. If you are travelling light and staying near the station, take it.
The car is the better choice when the station is not where you are going, which in hilly Central is often the case: Admiralty, Sheung Wan, SoHo or the Mid-Levels, with cases, children or a late landing. One fixed price covers the whole vehicle and the harbour tunnel toll, so a family or a team of colleagues shares it. More routes are on our Hong Kong transfers page.

The drive from HKG to Central
The airport sits on its own island off the north coast of Lantau. Your driver crosses to Lantau near Tung Chung and follows the North Lantau Highway east along the shore, with the mountains of Lantau on the right and the sea on the left. Then comes the Lantau Link: the Kap Shui Mun Bridge, the Ma Wan viaduct and the Tsing Ma Bridge, a double-deck suspension bridge whose lower deck carries the Airport Express trains. The Lantau Link has been toll-free since December 2020.
Over Tsing Yi island, Route 3 runs through the Cheung Tsing Tunnel, past the container port and along the West Kowloon Highway beside the ICC tower. At the end of the highway the road drops into the Western Harbour Crossing, a tunnel under Victoria Harbour that comes up in Sai Ying Pun on Hong Kong Island. The tunnel toll is included in your price. From there Connaught Road runs east along the waterfront into Central. Door to door it is about 35 km.
In normal traffic the transfer takes 35 to 40 minutes. The slow points are the tunnel approach and Connaught Road on weekday mornings and evenings, when the drive can take up to an hour. Late at night it is often closer to half an hour.
In very strong winds, traffic on the Tsing Ma Bridge can be moved to the sheltered single-lane roads on the lower deck, or the bridge can close, and journeys take longer. Hong Kong drives on the left, and the highways are well lit the whole way.

Meeting your driver at Hong Kong Airport
All arriving passengers come through Terminal 1, into Arrival Hall A or B. We track your flight, and your driver waits at the exit of your arrival hall holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the car. Terminal 2 reopened in May 2026 for departures only, so it matters on your way home: tell us your airline.
All arriving passengers come through Terminal 1, into Arrival Hall A or B depending on the gate. Terminal 2 reopened in May 2026 for departures only. We track your flight, and your driver waits at the exit of your arrival hall holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the car.
If your flight is delayed, the pickup moves with it at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land, which covers immigration and baggage. For the trip back, your driver collects you from your hotel or building lobby and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Tell us your airline, as some now check in at Terminal 2.

Where we drop off in Central and the Mid-Levels
Every address on the north side of Hong Kong Island is door to door. Central is dense and hilly, with one-way streets, tram lines and footbridges, so a precise address matters. Give us the building name as well as the street, and for the Mid-Levels tell us which entrance you use, as some residential towers have more than one level of access.
Central waterfront and IFC
Hotels and offices around IFC, Exchange Square and Statue Square. Cars set down at hotel driveways or office lobbies off Connaught Road and Des Voeux Road.
Admiralty and Pacific Place
Large hotels around Pacific Place, the government offices at Tamar and the Admiralty office towers, a few minutes east of Central along Queensway.
Mid-Levels and SoHo
Apartments on steep, narrow roads such as Conduit Road and Robinson Road, served by the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator. Your driver goes to the building entrance, not the bottom of the hill.
Sheung Wan
Boutique hotels and serviced apartments west of Central, and the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal at Shun Tak Centre, the first stop after the harbour tunnel.
Wan Chai
The convention centre, its harbourfront hotels and the business district east of Admiralty, about 5 minutes beyond Central in light traffic.

When to book your Central transfer
Hong Kong is busy all year, but the climate shapes the trip. The Observatory describes November and December as the most pleasant months, with sunshine and comfortable temperatures. Summer, from May to August, is hot and humid, and about 80 per cent of the year’s rain falls between May and September.
Typhoon season runs from May to November, with July to September the most likely months. When a strong tropical cyclone approaches, the Observatory raises warning signals; at Signal No. 8 and above, much of the city stops, flights are often cancelled and roads can close. If that affects your arrival, message us and we will move the pickup to your new flight.
In spring, drizzle and fog sometimes delay flights and ferries. Art Basel Hong Kong runs from 25 to 27 March 2027 and Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027; hotels in Central and Wan Chai fill early for both.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Central
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 35 min – 1h | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport Express | 35–50 minutes door to door | Trains about every 10 minutes, 24 minutes to Hong Kong station under IFC. Quick and reliable, but the free hotel shuttle buses ended in 2020, so you continue on foot or by taxi. |
| Airport bus | 1–1½ hours | Citybus airport routes run to Hong Kong Island, with stops in Central, Admiralty and Wan Chai. The lowest-cost option, with luggage racks, but slow in traffic and you walk from the stop. |
| Red taxi | 35–60 minutes | Red urban taxis queue outside arrivals and go anywhere on Hong Kong Island. Metered, with the tunnel toll added; a large family or group needs two cabs. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Central transfer suits
Business travellers
From the arrivals hall to a Central office lobby in about 40 minutes, with a quiet car for calls and no walk from Hong Kong station in a suit and summer humidity.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup and a minivan for up to seven with luggage. No train change, escalator or taxi queue with a pushchair.
Moving to the Mid-Levels
Arriving with a stack of cases for a new job or a long stay? The car goes to your building entrance on the hill, which no train or bus can do.
Art Basel and conference visitors
Hotels in Central and Wan Chai fill during the big fairs, and taxi queues grow. A booked car is waiting when you land, with room for portfolios.
Plan the rest of your Hong Kong stay
- Get an Octopus card for the MTR, trams, Star Ferry and buses. It saves fumbling for change, and many shops and convenience stores accept it too.
- The Peak Tram leaves from Garden Road in Central. Go early in the morning or on a weekday, as queues at the lower terminus are long on clear evenings.
- If you plan to take the Airport Express home, many airlines offer in-town check-in at Hong Kong station, so you can drop your bags in Central and spend the day bag-free.
- Check the Observatory’s warning signals on the day you fly in typhoon season. If a high signal is up, message us early and we will rearrange the pickup.
- For your flight home, leave Central about two and a half to three hours before departure, and add time at weekday rush hour for the harbour tunnel.
- Going on to Macau? Ferries leave from Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan, a few minutes from Central. For the next leg of an Asia trip, see our transfers from Changi Airport to Marina Bay and from Haneda into Tokyo.
