Keflavík to Blue Lagoon, straight from arrivals
A Keflavík to Blue Lagoon transfer is the classic way to start or end a trip to Iceland. The lagoon lies in the Svartsengi lava field, about 24 km by road from Keflavík Airport, so you can be at the entrance within half an hour of leaving the terminal.
Your driver meets you in arrivals and takes Route 41 and the Grindavík road south across the lava, about 25 minutes in normal conditions. The lagoon's partner coach, run by Destination Blue Lagoon, leaves the airport four times a day. A private car leaves when you are ready, which matters when your flight lands early, late or out of step with the timetable.
The real advantage comes afterwards. Your driver can wait while you bathe, with your suitcases locked in the car, then take you on to your hotel in Reykjavík or back to the terminal for your flight home. The waiting time is built into the fixed price you agree before booking.

The drive from KEF to Blue Lagoon
The route is short and simple. From the terminal your driver joins Reykjanesbraut (Route 41) heading east, around the roundabouts on the edge of Reykjanesbær. At the Grindavík roundabout a few kilometres further on, the car turns south onto Grindavíkurvegur (Route 43), a two-lane road across open lava fields covered in grey-green moss.
About 9 km down Route 43, Bláalónsvegur (Route 426) turns off towards the white steam of the Svartsengi geothermal power station. The lagoon's milky-blue water is a byproduct of that plant, and a few minutes later you reach the Blue Lagoon car park. In normal conditions the 24 km take about 25 minutes; allow 35 in snow or strong wind.
This corner of the peninsula has changed a great deal since 2023. Lava from the Sundhnúkur eruptions has crossed Route 43 and the lagoon road more than once, sections have been rebuilt across the new lava, and earth barriers now protect Svartsengi and the lagoon buildings. During some eruptions access has been diverted, for example along Route 44 from the west in 2024, and the lagoon has closed for periods from a few days to several weeks.
None of that should put you off, but it does mean the road on the day matters. Your driver checks umferdin.is and the safety notices on safetravel.is before setting out, and takes whichever approach is open. In winter the same storms that hit Route 41 blow across these lava fields too, so a windy day can add ten minutes.

Meeting your driver at Keflavík Airport
Keflavík Airport has one terminal building. After baggage reclaim and customs, walk out into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. The car is parked in P2, the short-term car park on the arrivals side, about 30 metres from the doors. The Flybus and the taxi rank are directly outside arrivals too.
Keflavík has a single terminal. After baggage reclaim and customs, walk out into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. The car is parked in P2, the short-term car park on the arrivals side.
Add your flight number when you book and we track it: the pickup moves with delays at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. A delay of over three hours or a diversion can need a new booking.
If you are being collected from the lagoon or a hotel there, your driver waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. If you want the car to wait while you bathe, tell us how long you plan to stay and we include it in the quote.

Where we drop off at the Blue Lagoon
Cars stop at the visitor car park, a short walk from the main entrance. The car park was rebuilt after lava reached the old one in November 2024, so follow the signs rather than older directions online. If you are staying on site, your driver takes you to your hotel. Tell us your entry time and whether the car should wait, and we plan the rest of the day around it.
Blue Lagoon main entrance
Day visitors are dropped by the car park. If your driver is not waiting, the Luggage House in the car park stores suitcases for a small fee.
The Retreat and Silica Hotel
The two hotels on the lagoon site have their own receptions. Give us the hotel name with your booking and the driver goes straight there.
Northern Lights Inn
A small hotel a few minutes from the lagoon, close to Svartsengi. Handy for a quiet first or last night near the airport.
On to Reykjavík
After your swim, continue to any hotel in the capital, about 50 minutes from the lagoon in normal traffic. One booking covers both legs.
Back to Keflavík Airport
The lagoon as your last stop in Iceland: about 25 minutes to the departures door. Leave the lagoon at least two and a half hours before a European flight.

When to book your Blue Lagoon transfer
The lagoon's hours change through the year. From 1 February to 31 May it opens 08:00 to 20:00. From 1 to 14 June and from 21 August to 31 January the hours are 08:00 to 22:00, and in high summer, 15 June to 20 August, 07:00 to 23:00. On 24 December it closes at 16:00 and on 31 December at 18:00, and guests are asked to leave the water 30 minutes before closing.
Those times matter if you land early in the morning: an arrival soon after dawn can mean the lagoon is not open yet. Pick an entry time with some slack, or save the visit for your departure day.
Winter bathing means steam rising off the water in the dark and, on a clear night, a chance of the northern lights. Snow and wind can slow the Grindavík road, so allow a little extra time.
Volcanic activity: on 30 September 2026 the Icelandic Met Office reported continued uplift under Svartsengi and said a new eruption on the Sundhnúkur crater row remains the most likely scenario, with short warning. The lagoon has closed during past eruptions, so check its website the day before your visit.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Blue Lagoon
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 25–35 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Destination Blue Lagoon coach | 25–35 minutes + wait for departure | The lagoon’s partner coach leaves the airport at 07:30, 09:30, 12:30 and 16:30, and returns at 12:00, 14:30 and 16:00. Simple and good value if your flight times fit the timetable. |
| Flybus with a lagoon stop | Set by the coach timetable | Reykjavík Excursions sells airport transfers with a Blue Lagoon stop on the way into the city or back to the airport. You fit your bathing time around the coach departures. |
| Taxi | 25–35 minutes | Available at the rank outside arrivals around the clock. Fine for the one-way ride, but you will need another car to leave the lagoon, and nobody keeps an eye on your luggage. |
| Rental car | 25–35 minutes + collection | Practical if you are touring Iceland anyway. In winter your first drive is on an unfamiliar road across exposed lava fields, often in the dark after a night flight. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Blue Lagoon transfer suits
Stopover travellers
A long stopover in Iceland is enough for a swim. Your driver takes you from arrivals to the lagoon and back to departures, with your bags in the car the whole time.
Couples starting a trip
Land, soak off the overnight flight and then carry on to your Reykjavík hotel in the same car. One booking, one driver and no coach timetable to watch.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup and one price for the car. Check the lagoon’s rules for young children before you book, as age limits apply to bathing.
Small groups and celebrations
A minivan for up to seven or a minibus for up to 16, with luggage, from arrivals to the lagoon and on to your hotel. Ask us to time it around your group’s entry slot.
Plan your Blue Lagoon visit
- Book your lagoon ticket before you fly. Entry is sold for a set arrival window, so choose one that leaves at least an hour after your scheduled landing for passport control and bags.
- Pack a swimsuit and a change of clothes in your hand luggage, so you never need to open a big suitcase in the lagoon car park.
- If the car is not waiting, the Luggage House in the main car park stores suitcases for a small fee. Smaller bags fit in the lockers included with entry.
- Check the lagoon’s website and safetravel.is the evening before. If volcanic activity closes the lagoon, we can re-quote the trip to go straight to your Reykjavík hotel.
- For driving rules, daylight hours and the latest on the Reykjanes eruptions, see our guide to transfers in Iceland.
- On departure day, leave the lagoon about two and a half hours before a European flight and three hours before a flight to North America. The terminal is about 25 minutes away.
