Amman Airport to Dead Sea by private car
Queen Alia International Airport sits in the desert 30 km south of Amman, and most visitors heading for the Dead Sea never need to go into the city at all. A private Amman Airport to Dead Sea transfer covers the 68 km in about 70 minutes. Your driver meets you in arrivals at Queen Alia Airport, and the road drops from the Amman plateau to the resort strip on the shore, about 440 metres below sea level.
The airport's only scheduled bus runs north into Amman, so the public choices for the Dead Sea are an airport taxi from the counter at the customs exit, a ride-hailing app or a rental car. A pre-booked car gives you one fixed price for the whole vehicle, agreed before you fly, and a driver who knows which resort gate to use.
Many visitors combine the Dead Sea with Petra and Wadi Rum. See Amman to Petra for the drive south, and our Jordan transfer guide for the rest of the country.

The drive from AMM to Dead Sea
From the terminal your driver heads north on the airport road towards Amman, then turns west through Na'ur, on the edge of the plateau. From there Route 40 winds down through bare, folded hills, past the sign that marks sea level, towards the floor of the Jordan Valley. Near the north shore of the Dead Sea it meets Highway 65, the Dead Sea Highway, which runs south along the water past Sweimeh to the hotel strip.
The descent is the part you remember. You leave the airport on the plateau and finish on the lowest land on Earth, with the surface of the sea about 440 metres below sea level, and the water appears below you as the road swings round the last bends. Your ears may pop on the way down.
The road is busiest at weekends. Jordan's weekend is Friday and Saturday, and families from Amman drive down to the shore on Friday mornings, so allow up to 90 minutes then. Midweek, the trip usually takes about 70 minutes, and late-evening arrivals have the road almost to themselves. Fuel, parking and waiting time are part of the fixed price.
If you want to stop at Madaba or Mount Nebo on the way, your driver takes the road south-west via Madaba instead. Mount Nebo is about 44 km from the airport and 32 km from the resorts, so the detour adds 15 to 30 minutes of driving plus the time you spend there.

Meeting your driver at Amman Airport
Queen Alia has one passenger terminal. Visitors who need a visa go to the visa counter first (Jordan Pass holders included), then passport control, baggage claim and customs. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall just past the customs exit, holding a sign with your name. The official taxi counter is also at the customs exit, with taxis and the Sariyah airport bus at the kerb outside.
Queen Alia has one passenger terminal. After you leave the aircraft, visitors who need one go to the visa counter (Jordan Pass holders included), then passport control, baggage claim and customs. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall just past the customs exit, holding a sign with your name, and walks you to the car outside.
The visa queue can take a while, which is why your 60 minutes of free waiting start from the actual landing time, not the scheduled one. We track your flight, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your driver's name and mobile number reach you before the trip.
For the trip back, your driver collects you from your resort and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. The airport asks passengers to arrive at least three hours before departure.

Where we drop off at the Dead Sea
On the Jordanian shore, the resorts stand in one strip along the Dead Sea Highway south of Sweimeh, each with its own gated entrance, and every one is door to door. A little further south are the public beach and the Panorama viewpoint, and inland are Madaba and Mount Nebo, where some visitors stay instead. Tell us the hotel name and we plan the right gate.
Sweimeh resort strip
Most of the large resorts stand side by side on the Dead Sea Highway just south of Sweimeh, with their own beaches, pools and spas. The car drives in to reception.
Amman Tourist Beach
The public beach complex a few kilometres south of the main hotels. An option for a day by the water if you are staying in Amman or Madaba rather than at a resort.
Dead Sea Panorama
A viewpoint high above the shore, about 10 km south of the hotels, looking across the whole basin. Easy to add as a stop on the way to or from your resort.
Baptism Site, Bethany Beyond the Jordan
The World Heritage site on the east bank of the Jordan River, where tradition places the baptism of Jesus, a short drive north of the hotels. We quote visits with waiting time.
Madaba and Mount Nebo
Hotels in Madaba, known for its 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land, are about 35 km from the airport. Mount Nebo, with its view over the Jordan Valley, is 10 km further.

When to book your Dead Sea transfer
The Dead Sea is at its most comfortable from October to May. Summer in the basin is very hot, so plan to spend the middle of the day in the water, the pool or the spa rather than sightseeing. In winter the shore is usually much milder than Amman, up on the plateau, which can be cold and wet from December to February.
Jordan's weekend is Friday and Saturday. Families from Amman drive down on Friday mornings and head home in the afternoon, so the road is busiest then and the resorts are fullest. Arriving from Sunday to Thursday is quieter. During Ramadan, traffic builds in the hour before sunset and the roads empty while people break their fast.
Flight schedules into Amman have changed at short notice during 2026, with some airlines pausing routes for weeks at a time. Add your flight number when you book and we follow any change. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Dead Sea
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 1h 10min – 1h 30min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport taxi | 70–90 minutes | Book at the Airport Taxi counter by the customs exit. Fares are fixed by the Land Transport Regulatory Commission and posted at the taxi stands; you take the next car in the line. |
| Ride-hailing app | 70–90 minutes plus wait | Arriving passengers can book through a transport app or at the booth at Arrivals Curbside Gate 3. Vehicle size, luggage space and child seats depend on the driver who accepts. |
| Airport bus + taxi | 2–2½ hours | The Sariyah Express runs from outside arrivals to North Amman bus station. From the city you still need a taxi of about 55 km back down to the shore, so it only suits a stop in Amman. |
| Rental car | 70–90 minutes plus pick-up | Car hire is available at the airport, and Jordan drives on the right. You will be tackling a long, winding descent straight after your flight, possibly in the dark. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Dead Sea transfer suits
Couples on a spa break
Straight from arrivals to a resort spa on the shore, without going near Amman. The car is waiting whatever time you land, and the luggage goes into the boot once.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup when you tell us the ages, and one price for the vehicle. A minivan takes up to seven with suitcases, so nobody rides with a case on their lap.
Pilgrims and church groups
Minibuses for 8 to 16 people, with planned stops at Mount Nebo or the Baptism Site added to the quote and luggage kept locked in the vehicle while you visit.
Travellers touring Jordan
Starting a loop of the Dead Sea, Petra and Wadi Rum? We quote each leg hotel to hotel on the same terms: fixed price, a named driver and free cancellation up to 48 hours before.
Plan the rest of your Dead Sea stay
- Float rather than swim. The water is about 9.6 times saltier than the ocean, so keep it away from your eyes and any cuts, and rinse off when you come out.
- Land in daylight if your flight times allow. The view as the road drops towards the sea is the highlight of the drive, and it is lost after dark.
- Add Madaba or Mount Nebo as a stop on the way. Madaba’s 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land and the view from Mount Nebo are both a short detour from the airport road.
- Visit the Baptism Site at Bethany Beyond the Jordan in the morning, before the heat builds. It is a short drive north of the resorts, and we can quote the return trip.
- Moving on to the south? We quote hotel-to-hotel rides from the shore to Petra and Wadi Musa, about 196 km and roughly three hours, with stops on request.
- For your flight home, leave the Dead Sea about four and a half hours before departure: up to 90 minutes for the climb back to the plateau, plus the three hours the airport asks for.
