Cairo Airport to Giza: crossing the city by car
Cairo Airport to Giza is a 40 km drive right across Greater Cairo, from Heliopolis in the north-east to the edge of the desert where the pyramids stand. On empty roads it takes about 45 minutes; in daytime traffic, an hour to an hour and a half is normal. Your driver meets you in arrivals at Cairo International Airport, whichever terminal you land at, and takes you to the door of your hotel by the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum or anywhere else in Giza.
There is no metro line to the airport, so public transport means a bus into the city, the metro to Giza and a taxi at the end. Ride-hailing apps work in Cairo and suit a solo traveller with light bags. For families, groups or anyone landing late with luggage, a pre-booked car at one fixed price for the whole vehicle is the simpler choice.
Heading for the Red Sea afterwards? We also drive from Hurghada Airport to El Gouna and from Sharm El Sheikh to Naama Bay.

The drive from CAI to Giza Pyramids
There is no single motorway from the airport to the pyramids, and your driver chooses the route on the day. The line on the diagram is the usual one. From Terminal 3 it follows Orouba Road through Heliopolis, past the Baron Empain Palace, then Salah Salem Road to the 6th October Bridge. The 15th of May Bridge carries you over Zamalek island and the Nile, and the 26th of July Corridor runs west through Mohandessin to the Ring Road.
The Ring Road takes you south to the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, which passes the Grand Egyptian Museum. At Remaya Square the pyramids come into view, and a few minutes later you reach your hotel. When the centre is jammed, drivers may go the long way round on the Ring Road via Maadi, or cut through Giza on Faisal Street. The distance changes; your price does not.
Traffic sets the time. Late at night, or early on a Friday, the main day off, about 45 minutes is realistic. On weekday mornings and from mid-afternoon into the evening, allow an hour to an hour and a half, occasionally more. In Ramadan, roads are at their most erratic around dusk, as everyone heads home to break the fast.
The airport road toll, fuel and parking are included in your fixed price. Security is heavy across Egypt, with extra measures at tourist sites, and police check ID regularly, so keep your passport or a copy with you in the car.
Since the Giza plateau was redeveloped, private cars and coaches no longer drive among the monuments. The main entrance is now on the Cairo-Fayoum road, south of the pyramids, with a visitor centre and electric buses inside.

Meeting your driver at Cairo Airport
Cairo has three passenger terminals. EgyptAir and its Star Alliance partners use Terminal 3, which is joined to Terminal 2 by a bridge; Terminal 1 is a separate building on the north side. After passport control and customs, your driver waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal, holding a sign with your name. The airport warns that unofficial taxi drivers approach tourists in the arrivals hall: ignore them and look for your name.
Cairo International has three passenger terminals. EgyptAir and most of its Star Alliance partners use Terminal 3, which is joined to Terminal 2 by a bridge; Terminal 1 is a separate building a few kilometres away on the north side. Visas on arrival are sold at kiosks before passport control, and since 1 August 2026 Cairo also offers digital visas on arrival, paid by card.
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal as you come out of customs, holding a sign with your name, so ignore offers of a taxi on the way. We track your flight, delays cost nothing extra, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land.
For your departure, your driver collects you from your Giza hotel and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Giza
Most visitors stay close to the pyramids or head straight to a sight. Private cars and coaches can no longer drive onto the plateau itself: visitors enter through the visitor centre on the Cairo-Fayoum road and ride electric buses between the monuments. We drop you at your hotel door, at the plateau entrance or at the Grand Egyptian Museum.
Marriott Mena House and Pyramids Road
Hotels at the western end of Pyramids Road (Al Haram Street), at the foot of the plateau, with views of the Great Pyramid. Door-to-door drop-off.
Nazlet El-Semman guesthouses
Small pyramid-view hotels in the village below the Sphinx. The lanes are narrow, so the car stops at the nearest point the road allows. Send us a map pin.
Plateau visitor centre
The main entrance to the pyramids site, on the Cairo-Fayoum road south of the plateau, with parking and electric buses inside. Handy if you land early and go straight in.
Grand Egyptian Museum
On the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, about 2 km north-west of the pyramids. Bags larger than 40 × 40 cm must go in the cloakroom, so luggage is easier left in the car.

When to book your Giza Pyramids transfer
The most comfortable time for the pyramids is October to April. Cairo's average highs are about 19°C in January and 30°C in October, against 35°C in July and August, and the plateau has almost no shade, so in summer go as early in the day as you can. Dust storms can blow in from the Sahara between March and May.
Ramadan is expected from about 8 February to 8 March 2027, depending on the moon. Traffic is unpredictable around dusk, and opening hours at sights can change, so check before you set out.
Grand Egyptian Museum: officially opened on 1 November 2025, with the Tutankhamun galleries included in every ticket. The galleries open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, and until 21:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with last entry one hour before closing. Landing on a Wednesday or Saturday afternoon? The late opening can fit in on the way to your hotel.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Giza Pyramids
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 45 min – 1h 30min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Ride-hailing app | 45 minutes–1½ hours | Uber, Careem and other apps operate in Cairo. Good for one or two people with light bags. You need mobile data on landing, then wait for a car, and boot space in a standard car is limited. |
| Airport limousine | 45 minutes–1½ hours | The airport’s limousine service picks up at the kerb outside each terminal, with fixed prices set by destination and car category. You arrange it after landing rather than before you fly. |
| White metered taxi | 45 minutes–1½ hours | Cairo’s white taxis have meters. The airport warns that unofficial drivers approach tourists in the arrivals hall, so use a taxi from outside, check the meter is running and that your cases fit. |
| Bus, metro and taxi | 2–3 hours | City buses leave from the bus station in front of Terminal 1. Ride into central Cairo, take metro Line 2 to Giza, then a taxi to the pyramids. Three legs with luggage: only for light travellers. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Giza Pyramids transfer suits
First-time visitors to Egypt
Land, meet your driver and wake up with the pyramids outside the window. No taxi offers to fend off in arrivals, and no Cairo traffic to navigate yourself.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup, and one price for the vehicle rather than per person. A minivan takes up to seven people with their suitcases, which a standard taxi cannot.
Museum lovers
Stop at the Grand Egyptian Museum on the way in, with your luggage kept in the car, and reach your hotel having already seen Tutankhamun’s golden mask.
Late-night arrivals
Landing after midnight? The roads are at their emptiest, so the drive can take as little as 45 minutes, and your driver is waiting in arrivals whatever the hour.
Plan your visit to the pyramids and Giza
- Visit the plateau as early in the day as you can. There is very little shade between the monuments, and the morning is the coolest time, especially from May to September.
- Buy Grand Egyptian Museum tickets on the museum’s official ticketing website, which says it is not responsible for tickets bought elsewhere. Allow at least half a day for the galleries.
- Inside the pyramids site, electric buses run between the visitor centre and the monuments. Wear good shoes anyway: there is sand and uneven ground at every stop.
- Carry your passport, or a copy with your visa, when you go out. Egyptian police check ID regularly, and tourist sites have extra security measures.
- Flying easyJet or Wizz Air? Check whether you land at Sphinx International Airport, on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road west of Giza, rather than Cairo International. It is a different pickup, about 35 km from the pyramids.
- Going on to the Red Sea? Our drivers meet flights at Hurghada Airport and Sharm El Sheikh Airport, and we quote journeys across Egypt.
- For your flight home, leave Giza about four hours before an international departure from Cairo, a little less late at night. The cross-city drive alone can take an hour and a half.
