Hurghada Airport to El Gouna: what to expect
A private transfer from Hurghada Airport to El Gouna takes about 40 minutes and covers 40 km. Hurghada Airport sits inland on the south side of the city, so although El Gouna is only around 25 km north of Hurghada itself, the drive first loops round the town before following the coast road north.
Your driver meets you as you walk out of arrivals, loads the bags and takes you straight to your hotel, villa or marina apartment. El Gouna is a privately developed lagoon town of hotels, marinas, beaches and golf courses, spread along about 10 km of coast and around 20 islands, and every part of it is on the same quote.
Public transport is limited. Go Bus runs to El Gouna, but from its station in central Hurghada, so you would need a taxi there first and a tuk-tuk at the other end. A pre-booked car costs the same for two people or six, which suits families, divers and golfers with heavy bags.
Combining the coast with the pyramids? We also run Cairo Airport to Giza, and quote journeys anywhere in Egypt.

The drive from HRG to El Gouna
Leaving Terminal 1, your driver heads north on El Nasr Street towards the city and then picks up the Ring Road, which runs round the western side of Hurghada rather than through the old centre at El Dahar or the hotel strip on Sheraton Road. On the northern edge of town the Ring Road meets the coast road towards Ras Gharib, and the last houses of El Ahyaa slip past.
From there it is about 20 km of straight, open road through the desert, with the Red Sea Mountains rising to the west and the coast a short way off to the east. The turning for El Gouna comes up on the right, and a few kilometres of quiet town roads lead past the golf courses to Downtown, Abu Tig Marina or your hotel. That is the line on the diagram below: 40 km in all.
In normal traffic the trip takes about 40 minutes. The slowest part is usually the first stretch through Hurghada, so allow up to 50 minutes in the evening. Fuel, parking and any road charges are included in your fixed price.
El Gouna was built from 1990 as a private town, with its own round-the-clock security team, and buildings designed to echo traditional rural Egyptian architecture. Vehicles may be checked as they come in from the coast road; your driver deals with this, and you stay in your seat.
Landing late is not a problem. Drivers work around the clock, and if your flight is delayed the pickup moves with it, so there is no need to rebook or call ahead from the plane.

Meeting your driver at Hurghada Airport
Hurghada has two terminals. Most international flights use Terminal 1, opened in 2014; Terminal 2 handles mainly domestic flights. If you need a visa and have not bought an e-visa, get one at the kiosks before passport control, paying in US dollars cash. After customs, walk out through the arrivals exit, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name and then walks you to the car.
Hurghada has two terminals. Most international flights use Terminal 1, the newer building opened in 2014, while Terminal 2 handles mainly domestic flights. If you need a visa and have not bought an e-visa, get one at the kiosks before passport control, paying in US dollars cash.
Your driver waits as you walk out of the arrivals exit, holding a sign with your name. Add your flight number when you book and we track it: the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land, which covers the visa and passport queues.
For the trip back, your driver collects you from your hotel or villa in El Gouna and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in El Gouna
El Gouna spreads along about 10 km of coast, with hotels and homes on islands set in lagoons. Cars reach the hotels and residential areas, so most drop-offs are door to door. The squares and marina promenades are easiest to explore on foot or by tuk-tuk. Tell us your hotel name, or send a map pin for a private villa or apartment.
Downtown and Tamr Henna Square
The original heart of the town, with Sultan Bey, Casa Cook, Cook’s Club, The Chedi and Three Corners Rihana nearby. Cafés and shops around the square are a short walk away.
Abu Tig Marina
Yachts, restaurants and bars around the marina, with small hotels such as Ali Pasha, Captain’s Inn and Turtle’s Inn. Your driver stops as close to the entrance as the marina roads allow.
New Marina
Home to the Fanadir and Mosaique hotels and a favourite with kitesurfers. Tell us if you are bringing board bags, so we send a vehicle with room for them.
The golf hotels
Ancient Sands Golf Resort, with its 18-hole course, Steigenberger Golf Resort and Sheraton Miramar. A minivan takes several golf bags; tell us how many when you book.
Mangroovy Beach
The beach area north of Abu Tig Marina, home to the DoubleTree by Hilton Mangroovy resort and holiday apartments. A map pin helps for private lets.

When to book your El Gouna transfer
El Gouna is warm all year. Average highs in nearby Hurghada run from about 22°C in January to 37°C in July, and the Red Sea stays at roughly 22–27°C, so swimming, diving and kitesurfing never really stop. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are the most popular times to visit.
El Gouna Film Festival: the ninth edition runs from 15 to 23 October 2026. If you are arriving that week, book your transfer early and reserve restaurant tables in Downtown and around the marinas before you land.
Ramadan is expected to run from about 8 February to 8 March 2027, depending on the moon. Driving in Hurghada can be erratic around dusk in Ramadan, when people head home to break the fast, so an evening landing may take a little longer.
In July and August, try to land in the morning or evening if you can choose: even the short walk from the terminal to the car is hot in mid-afternoon.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach El Gouna
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 40–50 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport taxi | 40–50 minutes | Taxis wait outside the terminal around the clock. Agree the fare before you get in and check the driver knows your hotel in El Gouna. Boot space varies, so it suits light luggage. |
| Taxi + Go Bus | 1½–2 hours | Go Bus serves El Gouna from its station in central Hurghada. From the airport you take a taxi to the station, then a tuk-tuk or taxi from the El Gouna stop. Two changes with all your bags. |
| Rental car | 40–50 minutes plus pick-up | You need an International Driving Permit alongside your licence. UK government advice is to avoid driving outside the main cities and resorts at night, and you rarely need a car once in El Gouna. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the El Gouna transfer suits
Couples and honeymooners
A quiet private car from the terminal to a lagoon-side hotel, with no fare to agree at the kerb. You are by the water within the hour.
Families
Child seats fitted before you land, and one price for the vehicle rather than per person. A minivan takes up to seven people with suitcases, buggies and beach gear.
Kitesurfers and divers
Board bags, kites and dive kit ride inside a minivan, not on the roof. Tell us what you are bringing and we size the vehicle to fit it all.
Golfers
El Gouna has golf at Ancient Sands and the Steigenberger Golf Resort. Tell us the number of players and golf bags, and we send a vehicle with room for everything.
Plan the rest of your El Gouna stay
- Apply for an Egyptian e-visa on the official portal before you fly. It saves the kiosk queue on arrival, and your 60 minutes of free waiting covers you either way.
- Inside El Gouna, tuk-tuks run from early morning until the small hours, and a shuttle boat links Downtown with Zaytouna Island and its beach. You rarely need a car once you are here.
- Arriving for the El Gouna Film Festival (15–23 October 2026)? Book dinner in Downtown and at Abu Tig Marina before you land, and allow extra time for everything that week.
- Luxor is about four hours by road from Hurghada. We quote one-way transfers and long day trips, with the waiting time at the temples included in the price.
- Adding Cairo to the trip? Our drivers meet flights at Cairo International for the drive across the city to the pyramids at Giza.
- For your flight home, leave El Gouna about three hours before an international departure. The drive takes under an hour, but allow for security checks and check-in queues at the terminal.
