Keflavík to Reykjavík by private car
Keflavík to Reykjavík is the first journey almost every visitor to Iceland makes. The international airport sits out on the Reykjanes peninsula, 50 km south-west of the capital, and the drive takes about 45 minutes. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Keflavík Airport, loads the bags and takes you along Route 41 to your hotel door.
The Flybus is the obvious alternative, and a good one: it meets every flight and waits if yours is late. What it cannot do is take you to the door in one go. It ends at the BSÍ bus terminal, and from there a smaller shuttle takes you to the bus stop nearest your hotel, which can add half an hour.
A private car makes most sense after a late landing, with young children or a lot of luggage, or when three or more people share one fixed price. It can also stop at the Blue Lagoon on the way, a detour of about 25 minutes of driving.

The drive from KEF to Reykjavík
From the terminal your driver joins Reykjanesbraut (Route 41), the main road of the peninsula, and follows it all the way to the capital. The first few kilometres run through a string of roundabouts on the edge of Reykjanesbær, the town beside the airport. After that the road is straight and open, crossing moss-covered lava fields with the sea of Faxaflói bay on your left and the cone of Keilir on your right.
Reykjanesbraut is now a dual carriageway for the whole way from Reykjanesbær to Hafnarfjörður. The last single-lane section, between Hvassahraun and the Krýsuvík junction, was widened and opened on 11 December 2025. Past the aluminium smelter at Straumsvík the road enters Hafnarfjörður, then continues through Garðabær and Kópavogur into Reykjavík. There are no tolls on the way.
In normal traffic the trip takes 45 to 50 minutes to the city centre. On weekday mornings and late afternoons the stretch through Hafnarfjörður and Garðabær slows down, and the run to downtown can take an hour.
Winter is the real variable. Route 41 is exposed to Atlantic storms, and in strong wind, snow or drifting snow the road authority can close it at short notice, as it did during a blizzard in December 2022, when thousands of travellers were stranded at the airport. Your driver checks road conditions on umferdin.is and the weather warnings on vedur.is before setting off, and drives to the conditions rather than the clock.
During past eruptions, drivers have been asked not to stop on Reykjanesbraut to watch the glow, so your driver will keep going.

Meeting your driver at Keflavík Airport
Keflavík Airport has one terminal building. After baggage reclaim and customs, walk out into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. The car is parked in P2, the short-term car park on the arrivals side, about 30 metres from the doors. The Flybus and the taxi rank are directly outside arrivals too.
Keflavík has a single terminal. After baggage reclaim and customs you walk out into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. The car is parked in P2, the short-term car park on the arrivals side about 30 metres from the doors.
Add your flight number when you book and we track it: the pickup moves with delays at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start from the actual landing time. If a storm diverts your flight or delays it by more than three hours, message us on WhatsApp; that can need a new booking, and we will help you rearrange it.
For the return, your driver collects you from your hotel and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Reykjavík
Downtown Reykjavík is compact, and since 2017 tour buses and coaches have been banned from the streets of the old centre. That is why Flybus passengers finish at a numbered bus stop. A car or minivan can reach most hotel doors; where a street is pedestrian or one-way, your driver stops at the nearest corner. Minibuses for large groups follow the bus rules and use the closest designated stop.
Downtown: Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur
The shopping streets running down from Hallgrímskirkja, lined with hotels and apartments. Some stretches are closed to cars, so the drop-off may be at the nearest open corner.
Old Harbour and Harpa
Waterfront hotels around the Harpa concert hall and the old harbour, where the whale-watching boats leave. Easy car access along the harbour road.
Laugardalur and Suðurlandsbraut
Larger hotels east of the centre, near the Laugardalur park and pool. Quick to reach from Route 41 and quick to leave on departure day.
Skarfabakki cruise terminal
The main cruise pier at Sundahöfn, east of downtown, about 53 km from the airport. Give us your ship and boarding time and we plan the pickup around it.
Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær and Kópavogur
The towns you pass on the way into the capital. Hotels, apartments and holiday homes here are 35 to 45 minutes from the airport.

When to book your Reykjavík transfer
Reykjavík is a year-round destination, and every season changes the drive. Around the winter solstice the sun rises after 11:00 and sets before 15:30, so most winter arrivals happen in the dark, and snow, ice and gales are common from November to March. This is when a driver who drives Route 41 every day earns their keep.
From May to August it is the other way round. In late June the sun sets around midnight and rises again before 03:00, so even a late arrival feels like early evening. Summer is also cruise season at Skarfabakki, and the busiest time for flights and hotels.
Iceland Airwaves fills downtown hotels and venues from 5 to 7 November 2026, with extra concerts on 4 and 8 November. Book your transfer early for that week.
Volcanic activity: on 30 September 2026 the Icelandic Met Office reported that ground uplift continues under Svartsengi, near Grindavík, and that a new eruption on the Sundhnúkur crater row remains the most likely scenario, with little warning. Check safetravel.is in the days before you fly.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Reykjavík
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 45 min – 1h | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Flybus | 1¼–1¾ hours to a hotel | Leaves from right outside arrivals about 40 minutes after each landing and waits for late flights. About 45 minutes to BSÍ, then a smaller shuttle to the stop nearest your hotel, which can take up to 30 minutes. |
| Strætó bus, route 55 | 1¼–1½ hours with a change | Twelve weekday departures from the arrivals stop, 06:27 to 22:54, with different times at weekends. Most trips end at Fjörður in Hafnarfjörður after about 50 minutes, where you change to a city bus with your luggage. |
| Taxi | 45–60 minutes | Available around the clock at the rank directly outside arrivals. You queue at the rank rather than being met inside, and a group with ski bags or lots of luggage may need two cars. |
| Rental car | 45–60 minutes + collection | Several rental companies have desks at the airport. Sensible if you are touring Iceland, but in winter it means an unfamiliar road, often icy and in the dark, straight after a night flight. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Reykjavík transfer suits
Late-night and early-morning arrivals
Flights land at all hours. Your driver is there at 05:00 or at midnight, and you go straight to your hotel instead of changing to a shuttle at the bus terminal.
Families with young children
Child seats fitted before pickup, no change of bus with tired children, and one price for the whole car. A minivan takes up to seven people with luggage.
Winter visitors
Arriving in the January dark is easier when someone else drives. Your driver knows Route 41 in wind and snow and checks the road status before setting out.
Groups and incentive trips
A minibus for up to 16 people and their luggage, met in arrivals as one group. Downtown, minibuses use the nearest designated bus stop, which we plan in advance.
Plan the rest of your Reykjavík stay
- Iceland keeps Greenwich time all year, with no summer clock change. It matches London in winter and is an hour behind it from late March to late October.
- Book the Blue Lagoon before you fly. Entry is sold for a set arrival time, and the lagoon is easiest to fit in on your arrival or departure day, as it is close to the airport.
- Hoping for the northern lights? They need dark and partly clear skies, so check the aurora and cloud forecasts on vedur.is in the evening and get away from the city lights.
- For day trips to Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, or along the south coast, most tours collect from Reykjavík hotels or designated bus stops. We can also quote a private car with your own stops.
- For driving rules, daylight hours and the latest on volcanic activity, read our notes on travelling in Iceland before you go.
- For your flight home, leave downtown Reykjavík about three hours before a European departure and a little earlier for North America. In stormy weather, check umferdin.is the evening before.
