Private transfers across Iceland
Almost every visitor to Iceland lands at Keflavík Airport, on the Reykjanes peninsula about 50 km from the capital. From the arrivals hall it is roughly 45 minutes along Route 41 to central Reykjavík, or 25 minutes south across the lava fields to the Blue Lagoon, which many travellers visit on the way into town or on their last day.
Iceland has no railway, and the airport coaches finish at a central bus terminal, so a private transfer is the simple way to go straight from the plane to your door. Your driver meets you in arrivals, tracks your flight and knows how the road behaves in a winter storm. The price is fixed for the whole vehicle, from a sedan for two to a minibus for a group with camera or ski bags.
We also quote rides from Keflavík to Hafnarfjörður, the Reykjavík cruise terminal, the domestic airport and the Golden Circle.
Driving and road conditions
Weather, not distance, sets travel times in Iceland. Conditions can change within hours, especially from October to April, and roads are closed when wind, snow or ice make them unsafe. Live road status is on umferdin.is, weather warnings are on vedur.is, and safetravel.is collects alerts for visitors.
If you drive yourself, headlights must be on at all times, all year, and driving off marked roads and tracks is strictly forbidden. Many visitors prefer to leave the first drive, straight off a night flight, to a local driver.
Daylight and when to travel
Daylight swings enormously through the year. In Reykjavík around the winter solstice the sun rises after 11:00 and sets before 15:30; in late June it sets around midnight and rises again before 03:00. Iceland keeps Greenwich time all year, with no summer clock change.
Summer brings the most flights, the longest days and cruise ships in Reykjavík. The darker months, roughly September to April, are the time for the northern lights, which need dark and partly clear skies. Iceland Airwaves fills Reykjavík from 5 to 7 November 2026, so book early for that week.
Volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula
Since late 2023 a series of eruptions on the Sundhnúkur crater row near Grindavík has affected the area around the Blue Lagoon. The most recent ran from 16 July to 5 August 2025. On 30 September 2026 the Icelandic Met Office reported continued uplift beneath Svartsengi and said another eruption remains the most likely scenario, with short warning. The Blue Lagoon closes temporarily when needed, so check safetravel.is and the lagoon's own updates close to your trip.

Iceland airport transfers: your questions
How long is the transfer from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík?
About 45 minutes to an hour for the 50 km, depending on traffic and weather. See our Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík guide for drop-off points and the alternatives.
Can I visit the Blue Lagoon on the way from the airport?
Yes. The lagoon is about 25 minutes from the terminal. Your driver can wait while you bathe, with your luggage in the car, then take you on to Reykjavík.
Do transfers run in winter?
Yes, all year. Drivers check road status and weather warnings before setting out. If the authorities close a road, nobody drives until it reopens; we keep in touch on WhatsApp and agree a new time.
Is there a train from Keflavík Airport?
No. Iceland has no railway. The options are the Flybus to the BSÍ terminal, Strætó bus route 55, a taxi, a rental car or a private transfer.
