Mauritius airport to Grand Baie: the north in an hour
The drive from Mauritius airport to Grand Baie crosses almost the whole island, 72 km from the south-east corner to the north coast. It sounds far, but most of it is dual carriageway: your driver meets you as you leave the arrivals hall at Mauritius Airport, joins the M1 within a couple of minutes and has you at your hotel in Grand Baie in about 1 hour 5 minutes in normal traffic.
By public transport, the same trip means bus 198 to Port Louis, about 85 minutes on its own, then a second bus north with your luggage. An airport taxi works if you are happy to queue at the counter. A pre-booked car is a fixed price for the whole vehicle, agreed before you travel, which is why it suits families and groups who would otherwise split two taxis.
Grand Baie is the liveliest corner of the island, with Pereybère, Trou aux Biches, Cap Malheureux and Grand Gaube a few minutes either side, all on the same quote.

The drive from MRU to Grand Baie
From the terminal your driver takes the M1, the island's main motorway, north-west past Plaine Magnien and Rose Belle and up onto the central plateau, skirting Curepipe. Near Phoenix the quickest route leaves it for the M3 link roads, which run past Bagatelle and Verdun to Terre Rouge and bypass Port Louis altogether. At Terre Rouge it joins the M2, the motorway north past Pamplemousses and Mapou, which ends at the edge of Grand Baie.
That is the line on the diagram below: 72 km, nearly all of it on dual carriageway. The alternative is to stay on the M1 into Port Louis and pick up the M2 on the far side of the city. It looks shorter on the map but is slower whenever the capital is busy, so your driver decides on the day.
The plateau around Curepipe sits well above the coast and is noticeably cooler; you feel the warmth again as the M2 drops towards the sea. The slow parts of the trip are the weekday rush hours around Port Louis and the plateau towns; outside them the motorways move freely. Allow about 1 hour 5 minutes normally and up to 1 hour 30 minutes at peak times.
Mauritius drives on the left. Pedestrians and cyclists use main roads, motorways included, by day and at night, which is one more reason to let a driver who makes this trip every week handle it after a long flight. Fuel and parking are included in your fixed price.

Meeting your driver at Mauritius Airport
SSR International has one passenger terminal. After immigration and health checks, take the escalator down to baggage reclaim, then clear customs into the Tour Operators and Hotels Hall, where the resort and tour operator desks are. Your driver meets you with a name sign as you leave that hall, where friends and family greet arriving passengers. Golf bags and other oversize items arrive on the out-of-gauge belt beside belt 1.
Mauritius has a single passenger terminal at SSR International. Immigration and health counters scan the QR code from your All-in-one Travel Form, and baggage reclaim is one floor down by escalator. Oversize items such as golf bags, surfboards and pushchairs come out on the out-of-gauge belt beside belt 1.
After customs you pass through the Tour Operators and Hotels Hall. Your driver waits with a name sign at the exit of that hall, where people meet arriving passengers. Give us your flight number: the pickup follows any delay at no cost, and the 60 free minutes of waiting run from your actual landing time.
For your departure, the driver meets you at your hotel reception and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Leave earlier on weekday mornings, when traffic builds around Port Louis.

Where we drop off around Grand Baie
Grand Baie itself is a small, busy town wrapped around a sheltered bay, with the resort coast running both ways from it. Every hotel, apartment and villa is door to door. Tell us the hotel name, or send a map pin for a private rental, and the driver plans the last few streets, which matters on the narrow lanes behind the beaches.
Grand Baie town
Hotels and apartments around the bay, close to the bars, beach clubs and more than 50 restaurants, plus the Grand Bazar for souvenirs.
Pereybère
A small public beach and village a few minutes north of Grand Baie, popular for apartments and guesthouses within walking distance of the sand.
Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy
Long beaches south-west of Grand Baie along the coast road, about ten minutes from town and a little closer to the airport, with several large resorts.
Cap Malheureux and Grand Gaube
The northern tip, with the red-roofed church of Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice and quieter resorts, ten to fifteen minutes beyond Grand Baie.
Pointe aux Canonniers
The headland between Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches, with villas and hotels on quiet side roads. A map pin helps for private rentals.

When to book your Grand Baie transfer
The north is busy all year, and Grand Baie is the island's liveliest base in every season. Summer, from November to April, brings the hottest days and calm mornings, with the most rain from January to March. Winter, from May to October, is cooler and breezier, though the strongest winds blow on the east and south coasts. September to November are usually the driest months.
The official cyclone season runs from November to mid-May. Under Class I and II warnings the airport stays open. Within three hours of a Class III warning it closes and driving is prohibited, so flights and transfers move; we track your flight and rearrange the pickup with you.
Christmas and New Year are the peak weeks, with fireworks on most nights from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve. Thaipoosam Cavadee (January or February), Maha Shivaratri (February or March) and Diwali (October or November) are public holidays; before Maha Shivaratri, pilgrims walk the main roads to Grand Bassin. Book early around those dates.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Grand Baie
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 1h 5min – 1h 30min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Bus 198 + second bus | 2½–3 hours | Bus 198 leaves the stop in the airport car park every 15 minutes for Port Louis, a ride of about 85 minutes. You then change in the capital for a bus north to Grand Baie, with your luggage. |
| Airport taxi | 1–1½ hours | From the official taxi counter in the Tour Operators Hall, which publishes a fare list. Straightforward, but you queue on arrival rather than being met by name at the hall exit. |
| Rental car | 1–1½ hours plus pick-up | Hire desks are at the airport and the motorways are easy to follow. You drive on the left after a long flight, and hire companies often want a year’s experience and an international permit. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Grand Baie transfer suits
Families
One price for the car, child seats fitted to the ages you give us, and a minivan for seven with luggage. Most of the hour is on dual carriageway, which helps car-sick children.
Groups of friends
Grand Baie’s bars and beach clubs draw groups. A minibus for 8 to 16 is one booking and one fixed price, instead of a convoy of taxis from the counter.
Sailors and divers
Catamaran trips to Coin de Mire and Îlot Gabriel leave from the north coast. Bringing dive kit or a kite? Tell us about bulky bags and we will size the vehicle.
Late arrivals
Town buses run until about 20:00 and rural ones stop earlier. Land at midnight and your driver is still there, tracking the flight and waiting at the hall exit.
Plan the rest of your Grand Baie stay
- Fill in the Mauritius All-in-one Travel Form online before you fly; the QR code speeds up immigration. Use only the official site, safemauritius.govmu.org, as the airport warns of fake copies.
- The SSR Botanic Garden at Pamplemousses is right beside the motorway. Add a stop of an hour or two to your quote, on the way in or out, and your luggage stays in the car.
- For boat trips to Coin de Mire and Îlot Gabriel, the tourism authority advises using boats with a registration number beginning with PC, the code for licensed commercial operators.
- Splitting your stay between the north and the east? We quote hotel-to-hotel rides across the island, and our airport run to Belle Mare works the same way as this one.
- For your flight home, leave Grand Baie about four hours before a long-haul departure, and a little earlier on weekday mornings, when the motorway around Port Louis is busiest.
- Combining Mauritius with South Africa? We also drive from Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo airport to Sandton, with the same fixed-price, met-on-arrival service.
