Johannesburg Airport to Sandton: car or Gautrain?

The trip from Johannesburg Airport to Sandton is about 26 km by road, from O.R. Tambo International to the business district around Nelson Mandela Square. By private car it takes about 30 minutes outside rush hour: your driver meets you in arrivals at O.R. Tambo and drives the freeways to your hotel, office or the Sandton Convention Centre.

The honest comparison is the Gautrain. Its airport line runs from the terminal to Sandton station in about 15 minutes, every 10 minutes at weekday peaks, and in rush hour no car can match it. If you are travelling light and staying near the station, take the train.

A car makes more sense when the station is not where you are going: hotels in Rosebank, Melrose Arch, Morningside or Bryanston, a landing after the trains stop for the night, or a family or team with luggage, where one vehicle covers everyone. The price is fixed for the whole car and agreed before you fly, and we track your flight.

The drive from JNB to Sandton

From the terminal, your driver joins the R24, the Albertina Sisulu Freeway, heading west past Kempton Park towards Edenvale. There are two usual ways north from there. One cuts through Edenvale on Van Riebeeck Avenue to the N3 Eastern Bypass near Modderfontein; the other stays on the R24, where it joins the N12, to the George Bizos interchange (formerly Gillooly's) near Bedfordview, and takes the N3 north. Both leave the N3 at Marlboro Drive, where Katherine Street runs west into the middle of Sandton. The shorter line is about 26 km.

Gauteng's e-tolls were switched off in April 2024, so there is no toll on the way. The gantries still stand over the freeways, now used for road safety and policing.

Traffic, not distance, sets the time. Outside rush hour the drive takes about 30 minutes. On weekday mornings and late afternoons the N3 and the roads into Sandton are heavily congested, and the same trip can take 70 minutes or more. The Gautrain's own peak periods, roughly 06:00 to 08:30 and 15:00 to 18:30 on weekdays, are a fair guide to when the roads are busiest too. Local drivers watch the traffic and choose between the N3 and the metropolitan roads through Modderfontein and Marlboro.

The UK Foreign Office's advice for South Africa is to use main roads to and from airports, and it lists researched private hire among the safer ways to get around. The route above uses freeways and main roads all the way.

Meeting your driver at Johannesburg Airport

International flights arrive at Terminal A and domestic flights at Terminal B, linked by the Central Terminal Building, with the Gautrain station above its departures level. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the car in the nearby parking area. The airport accredits official taxi services to curb touting, so turn down unsolicited offers of a ride.

O.R. Tambo has two arrivals halls: international flights arrive at Terminal A and domestic flights at Terminal B, with the Central Terminal Building between them and the Gautrain station above. Your driver waits in your arrivals hall holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the car in the nearby parking area. Decline offers of rides from anyone else in the hall.

Add your flight number when you book and we track it: the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land, which covers passport control and baggage.

For the trip back, your driver collects you from your hotel or office and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Tell us your terminal: A for international, B for domestic.

Where we drop off in Sandton and nearby

Sandton’s business district packs hotels, office towers, the Sandton City mall and the convention centre into a few blocks around Nelson Mandela Square. Every address there is door to door. We also cover the neighbouring districts, several of which have no Gautrain station. Give us the hotel, or the company and building name, and your driver plans the last few turns.

Sandton Central

Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton City and the hotels around them, with the Gautrain station on Rivonia Road. Door to door, including office-tower lobbies.

Sandton Convention Centre

On Maude Street, next to Nelson Mandela Square. Delegates are dropped at the entrance, and we can collect you after the last session of the day.

Rosebank

About 5 km south of Sandton, with hotels, malls and galleries. It has its own Gautrain station, but from the airport you change trains at Sandton.

Melrose Arch

A walkable precinct of hotels, offices and restaurants east of Rosebank, close to the M1. It has no Gautrain station, so a car is the simplest way in.

Morningside, Rivonia and Bryanston

Business parks, guesthouses and homes north of the centre, well away from the Gautrain station. This is where a door-to-door car saves the most time.

When to book your Sandton transfer

Sandton is a year-round business destination, so the busiest weeks follow the conference calendar rather than the seasons. When a large event fills the Sandton Convention Centre, hotels nearby fill too and the roads around Maude Street slow down, so book your transfer early and allow extra time.

Johannesburg sits at about 1,750 metres on the Highveld. Summer, roughly November to March, brings hot days and afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy rain at the evening rush can add a lot of time to the drive. Winter, from about June to August, is dry and sunny, with cold nights and the occasional frost.

For the quickest trip, land between the morning and evening peaks: a midday arrival usually means a clear run along the R24 and N3. Evening arrivals after 20:30 are when a booked car helps most, as the Gautrain's published service hours have ended.

Who the Sandton transfer suits

Business travellers

A driver in the hall, a quiet car for calls, and a drop-off at the office tower or the convention centre itself, not at a station a few blocks away.

Late arrivals

The Gautrain’s published hours end at 20:30. Land later, or wait long at passport control, and a booked car with flight tracking is the simplest way to Sandton.

Teams and families

One price for the vehicle. A minivan takes up to seven people with luggage, a minibus 8 to 16, and child seats are fitted if you tell us the ages.

Safari travellers

Johannesburg is the usual gateway to Kruger and the safari lodges. Spend a night in Sandton, then we take you back to O.R. Tambo for your onward flight.

Plan the rest of your Sandton stay

  • If you use the Gautrain later in your stay, a contactless bank card works at the gates. The UK Foreign Office advises not walking to or from stations after dark.
  • Speaking at or attending the Sandton Convention Centre? Book a collection after the last session as well as the morning drop-off, so you are not waiting on the street.
  • Meetings in Pretoria? It is about 50 km from the airport, roughly 45 minutes outside rush hour, and we quote airport-to-Pretoria and Sandton-to-Pretoria transfers.
  • Before you fly, read the UK Foreign Office’s South Africa travel advice, which also covers the online traveller declaration required since 1 July 2026. Our South Africa travel notes summarise the basics.
  • Flying on to Cape Town? We meet flights there too, with transfers to the V&A Waterfront hotels and out to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
  • For your flight home, leave Sandton about two and a half hours before a domestic departure and three and a half before an international one. In weekday rush hours, add 30 minutes.

Johannesburg Airport to Sandton: your questions

How long does it take from Johannesburg Airport to Sandton by car?

About 30 minutes for the 26 km outside rush hour, via the R24 and the N3 Eastern Bypass. On weekday mornings and late afternoons, allow up to 70 minutes or more, especially in summer thunderstorms. Rosebank and Melrose Arch take about the same time; Bryanston and Rivonia a little longer.

How much does a private transfer from Johannesburg Airport to Sandton cost?

One fixed price for the whole vehicle, not per person. It depends on the vehicle size, the date and time, and any stops you add. Fuel, parking, flight tracking and waiting time are included. Send your trip and we email the price within 24 hours, with nothing to pay until you accept it.

Is the Gautrain quicker than a car from O.R. Tambo to Sandton?

In rush hour, yes. The train takes about 15 minutes to Sandton station and runs every 10 minutes at weekday peaks, every 20 off-peak, with published hours of 05:30 to 20:30. A car wins on a late landing, with lots of luggage, for groups, and for hotels away from the station, such as Melrose Arch or Bryanston.

Can you drop us at the Sandton Convention Centre or our office?

Yes. Every address in Sandton is door to door, including the convention centre entrance on Maude Street, hotel lobbies and office towers. Give us the company and building name when you book. We can also add a stop, for example at the office before the hotel, on the same fixed price.

What happens if my flight into Johannesburg is delayed?

Add your flight number when you book and we track it, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost. Your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. If a delay runs past three hours or your flight is diverted, message us on WhatsApp: under our policy that can need a new booking, and we will help rearrange it.

Are there e-tolls between O.R. Tambo and Sandton?

No. Gauteng’s e-toll system was switched off at midnight on 11 April 2024, and motorists are no longer charged on the freeways around Johannesburg. The gantries remain for road safety and policing. Any other road costs on your route, such as parking, are included in your fixed price.

Where will my driver meet me at O.R. Tambo, Terminal A or B?

In the arrivals hall of the terminal you land at: Terminal A for international flights and Terminal B for domestic ones. Your driver holds a sign with your name and has your flight number, so if your terminal changes, the pickup follows. You receive the driver’s name and phone number before the trip.
