Cape Town to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, door to door
Most visitors going from Cape Town to Stellenbosch start at the airport, and that is the shortest way in: 37 km from Cape Town International to the oak-lined town centre, about 40 minutes by car. Your driver meets you in arrivals and takes the N2 and the R310 past the first vineyards to your hotel, guesthouse or wine estate.
There is no rail link or direct public bus from the airport, and many Winelands hotels sit on farms outside town, so a car is the practical choice. The real question is who drives. After a long flight, on the left-hand side of the road, with tastings planned for the afternoon, most travellers would rather someone else did.
Franschhoek is about 32 km further on, over the Helshoogte Pass, so roughly 1 hour 10 minutes from the airport in all. Spending a few nights in the city first? We collect from Cape Town hotels too: from the V&A Waterfront it is about 45 minutes to Stellenbosch. The price is fixed for the whole vehicle, however many of you share it.

The drive from CPT to Stellenbosch & Franschhoek
Your driver leaves the airport on Airport Approach Road and joins the N2 eastbound towards Somerset West, crossing the Cape Flats for about 15 km. At the Baden Powell Drive exit the route turns north onto the R310, and the city quickly gives way to farmland. The road passes Faure and the Meerlust estate, then Spier, before entering Stellenbosch as Adam Tas Road alongside the railway. It is about 37 km in all, with no tolls.
For estates south of town along the R44, your driver may stay on the N2 to Somerset West and turn north there instead. For Franschhoek, the R310 carries on east out of Stellenbosch and climbs the Helshoogte Pass, past Delaire Graff and Tokara near the top, then drops through Pniel to meet the R45 near Boschendal. Franschhoek village is about 15 km further along the R45.
In normal traffic, Stellenbosch is about 40 minutes from arrivals. Weekday rush hours are slower: the N2 towards Somerset West is busy in the late afternoon, and Adam Tas Road queues into town in the morning, so allow up to an hour. The Franschhoek Wine Tram currently warns of roadworks around Franschhoek, Simondium and Klapmuts causing delays on certain days, which can add time on the R45.
The UK Foreign Office advises travellers to use Airport Approach Road rather than Borcherd's Quarry Road and to keep to main roads to and from the airport; the route above follows that advice. Some estates sit at the end of long private drives with a security gate, so a map pin for the exact entrance helps your driver find it first time, especially after dark.

Meeting your driver at Cape Town Airport
Cape Town International has one Central Terminal Building, with domestic and international arrivals both on the ground floor. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall on your side of the terminal, holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the car in the airport parkades a few minutes away. App-based taxis use a separate pickup area in Parkade 2. The airport asks passengers not to accept rides from unsolicited drivers in the hall.
Cape Town International has a single Central Terminal Building, with domestic and international arrivals on the ground floor. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall on your side of the terminal with a sign showing your name, then walks you to the car in the airport parkades. Turn down anyone else offering a ride: the airport asks passengers not to accept unsolicited drivers.
We track your flight, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land.
For the trip back, your driver collects you from your hotel or estate reception and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. From Franschhoek, allow at least an hour and a quarter to the airport.

Where we drop off in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek
Stellenbosch’s centre is a compact grid of oak-lined streets around the Braak, the old town square, and every hotel and guesthouse there is reachable by car. Outside town, estates sit in the Jonkershoek Valley, on the Helshoogte Pass and along the R44, often up long drives with a security gate. Send us the estate name and a map pin, and your driver will take you to reception.
Historic Stellenbosch
Dorp Street, Church Street and the Braak, with Cape Dutch houses, galleries and restaurants. Hotels here are door to door, and the centre is small enough to explore on foot.
Jonkershoek Valley
East of town below the mountains, home to Lanzerac and other estates and guest farms, a few minutes from the centre along a quiet valley road.
Helshoogte Pass
Delaire Graff and Tokara sit near the top of the pass on the R310 towards Franschhoek, with wide views back over the valley. About 10 to 15 minutes from the centre.
Spier and the R44 estates
Spier is on the R310 as you arrive, and more estates line the R44 south towards Somerset West. Both are easy drop-offs before you reach town.
Franschhoek
Boutique hotels and restaurants line the village main road, with estates along the R45 such as Boschendal. The Wine Tram leaves from terminals in the village and at Groot Drakenstein.

When to book your Stellenbosch & Franschhoek transfer
The Winelands are busiest from October to April. Harvest falls in late summer, roughly February to April, when the cellars are working flat out and the vineyards are full of pickers. Summers are hot and dry; most of the rain comes between June and September,, turning the valleys green.
Franschhoek has a full events calendar. The Franschhoek Cap Classique Festival is on 5 and 6 December 2026, the Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek on 19 to 21 March 2027, and Franschhoek Celebrates Bastille on 10 and 11 July 2027. Rooms in the village fill early for these weekends and the main road is slow, so book your transfer when you book your stay.
For the quickest drive, land around the middle of the day, between the morning and evening rush hours. On a late arrival the roads are clear; let a smaller guesthouse know your landing time, as not all keep reception open late.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Stellenbosch & Franschhoek
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 40 min – 1h | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Rental car | 40–60 minutes + collection | Gives you freedom to hop between estates, but you drive on the left after a long flight, and a day of tastings means someone in your group stays on water. |
| E-hailing app (Uber, Bolt) | 40–60 minutes + pickup wait | Pickups are from the e-hailing area in Parkade 2. Fine for the ride into town, though you will need cars again for estates outside it. The UK Foreign Office advises booking only through the app. |
| Shared shuttle | 1–1½ hours | Shuttle companies leave from the airport’s international inner lane. You pay per seat, which can suit a solo traveller, but you wait for other passengers and share their drop-offs. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Stellenbosch & Franschhoek transfer suits
Wine lovers
Nobody has to stay sober to drive. Add a tasting or lunch stop at Spier on the way in, with your luggage locked in the car while you taste.
Couples on estate stays
Many Winelands hotels are on farms outside town, up long private drives. Your driver finds the right gate, so your first sight of the place is the view, not the map.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup if you tell us the ages, and one price for the vehicle. A minivan takes up to seven people with their luggage.
Weddings and groups
Wine estates around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are favourite wedding venues. Minibuses carry 8 to 16 guests, and we can plan separate pickups for guests on different flights.
Plan the rest of your Winelands stay
- Reserve estate lunches and tastings before you fly. Popular restaurants book out at weekends in summer, and some tastings are by appointment only.
- Book the Franschhoek Wine Tram for your Franschhoek day. Its hop-on hop-off lines run between estates from terminals in the village and at Groot Drakenstein, so nobody has to drive.
- Stellenbosch’s centre is walkable. Dorp Street, the Braak and the university quarter are minutes apart, so you only need a car for estates outside town.
- Thinking of driving between the two towns yourself? The 32 km road over the Helshoogte Pass winds through vineyards and mountain bends: lovely, but not one to drive after a tasting.
- Splitting your trip with Johannesburg? We meet flights at O.R. Tambo too, with transfers from the airport into Sandton and around the rest of South Africa.
- For your flight home, leave Stellenbosch about two and a half hours before a domestic departure and four hours before an international one. From Franschhoek, add half an hour.
