Private transfers across South Africa
South Africa's two main gateways sit at opposite ends of the country, about 1,400 km apart by road. Cape Town International serves the Western Cape: the hotels of the V&A Waterfront, the Atlantic beaches and the wine country around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. O.R. Tambo International serves Johannesburg, Pretoria and the business district of Sandton, and is the usual starting point for a safari.
Public transport from the airports is patchy. Johannesburg has the Gautrain, a fast rail link from the airport to Sandton, but Cape Town's MyCiTi airport bus is listed as temporarily suspended. With a private transfer, a local driver meets you inside the arrivals hall, keeps to main roads and takes you to the door, for one fixed price for the whole vehicle.
Driving and road rules
South Africa drives on the left. Speed limits are generally 120 km/h on highways and lower in towns, and the UK Foreign Office describes road conditions as generally very good, with some potholes on remote roads. Gauteng's e-tolls were switched off in April 2024, so the freeways around Johannesburg no longer charge.
For Cape Town airport, the Foreign Office advises staying on the N2 and M3 rather than the R300, and using Airport Approach Road rather than Borcherd's Quarry Road. Our Cape Town routes follow that advice, and any tolls on your route are included in the fixed price.
When to travel
Cape Town has warm, dry summers from about December to March and most of its rain between June and September; the south-easter wind blows mostly in spring and summer. Its busy season runs from October to April. Johannesburg sits about 1,750 metres up on the Highveld, with afternoon thunderstorms from about November to March and dry, sunny winters with cold nights.
Getting around
Johannesburg and Cape Town are linked by frequent domestic flights, and both airports handle domestic and international traffic. The UK Foreign Office lists the Gautrain, MyCiTi buses in central Cape Town and on the Atlantic Seaboard, app-booked e-hailing and researched private hire among the safer ways to travel, and minibus taxis and Metrorail trains among the riskier ones.

South Africa airport transfers: your questions
Where will my driver meet me?
Inside the arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name: in the Central Terminal Building at Cape Town, and at Terminal A (international) or Terminal B (domestic) at O.R. Tambo.
Is there anything to do before flying to South Africa?
The UK Foreign Office says travellers must submit an online traveller declaration before travelling, from 1 July 2026, and that passports need two blank pages. Check the current rules for your nationality before you fly.
Is the Gautrain or a private transfer better from O.R. Tambo?
The Gautrain is quickest to Sandton in rush hour with light luggage. A car suits late arrivals, groups and hotels away from the stations. See Johannesburg Airport to Sandton.
Are tolls included in the price?
Yes. Any tolls, fuel, parking and waiting time are included in your fixed price.
