Private transfers across Morocco

Most trips to Morocco's red city begin at Marrakech Menara Airport, only 6 km from the medina. The distance is short, but arriving is not always simple: riads hide in lanes that cars cannot enter, taxi fares often need agreeing before you set off, and an evening landing means finding your way in the dark.

A private transfer takes care of that. Your driver meets you at the arrivals exit and drives you to the gate or square closest to your riad, where many riads send someone to walk you in. Our Marrakech airport to medina guide explains the drop-off points neighbourhood by neighbourhood.

We also quote transfers from Marrakech to hotels in Hivernage and Gueliz, villas in the Palmeraie, the Agafay desert camps, the Atlas Mountains around Imlil and the Ourika valley, and the Atlantic coast at Essaouira. The price is fixed for the whole vehicle, so families and groups share one fare.

Medinas, riads and car-free lanes

Morocco's old cities were built long before cars. In Marrakech the medina is ringed by about 19 km of ramparts, and inside them most lanes are too narrow for vehicles. Drivers stop at the nearest gate, square or car park, and the final few minutes are on foot. Many riads send a member of staff to meet guests, and porters with handcarts work at the busier gates. Hotels outside the walls, and those on the medina's main avenues, have direct car access.

Best time to travel

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons in Marrakech. Average highs are about 19 °C in January, 26 °C in April and 29 °C in October, while July and August average close to 38 °C.

Ramadan in 2027 is expected to run from about 8 February to 8 March, with dates confirmed by the sighting of the new moon. Transfers run as normal; traffic peaks just before sunset, when people head home to break the fast.

Getting around

UK travel advice notes that road accidents are common in Morocco and that poor lighting makes night driving riskier. It recommends agreeing a taxi fare in advance or checking the meter, and using only guides with an official badge in the medinas. A pre-booked car at a fixed price avoids the negotiation, and for longer drives to the mountains or the coast, daylight departures are the most relaxed.

Morocco airport transfers: your questions

How far is Marrakech airport from the medina?

About 6 km. The drive takes around 15 minutes in light traffic and up to 30 in the evening. See Marrakech airport to medina transfers.

Can a car reach my riad?

Usually to the nearest gate or square rather than the door, because most medina lanes are too narrow for cars. It is normally a walk of a few minutes, and many riads send someone to meet you.

Do you drive to the Atlas Mountains and the desert?

Yes. From Marrakech we quote transfers to Imlil and the Toubkal area, the Ourika valley, the Agafay desert camps and Essaouira. Enter both addresses in the quote form.

Do transfers run during Ramadan?

Yes, as normal. Ramadan 2027 is expected from about 8 February to 8 March. Allow a little extra time in the hour before sunset, when traffic is at its heaviest.
