Marrakech airport to medina: what to expect
The Marrakech airport to medina transfer is one of the shortest anywhere: Menara airport is about 6 km south-west of the old city, around 15 minutes away in light traffic. The tricky part is not the distance but the last few hundred metres. Most riads sit in narrow lanes that cars cannot enter, and agreeing a taxi fare at the rank is not how most people want to start a holiday.
Your driver meets you as you come out of the arrivals hall at Marrakech Airport, takes the luggage and drives you to the gate or square closest to your riad. Many riads send someone to meet the car and walk you in; give us the riad's name and we will plan the handover point.
Hotels outside the walls, in Hivernage, Gueliz or the Palmeraie, get door-to-door service. The price is fixed for the whole car, so a family or group shares one fare. For travel beyond the city, see our Morocco transfer notes.

The drive from RAK to Marrakech Medina
From the terminal your driver heads north-east on Avenue Guemassa, a wide boulevard lined with palms and newer hotels, then follows Boulevard El Yarmouk along the outside of the medina's red ramparts. The walls run for about 19 km around the old city, with around 20 gates, and the evening light turns them a deep pink.
The car enters the walls at Bab Jdid, beside the gardens of La Mamounia, and continues along Avenue Houmman El Fetouaki to the Koutoubia Mosque, whose 12th-century minaret stands at the edge of Jemaa el-Fnaa. That is the line on the diagram: about 6 km, and 10 to 15 minutes when the roads are clear. There are no tolls.
Traffic builds from late afternoon into the evening, when the square fills with food stalls and the streets around it fill with scooters, horse-drawn calèches and people on foot. At those times allow 25 to 30 minutes. Riads in the northern medina, around Bab Doukkala or Ben Youssef, are reached through other gates and take a few minutes longer.
Inside the walls only a few streets take cars. The lanes that lead to most riads are too narrow, so your driver stops at the gate, square or car park your riad recommends, usually a few minutes' walk from the door. Late at night, when the lanes are dark and quiet, it is worth asking the riad to send someone to meet you there.
If you are staying outside the walls, the drive is simpler still: Hivernage is about 10 minutes from the terminal, Gueliz around 15 and the Palmeraie 20 to 35, all door to door.

Meeting your driver at Marrakech Airport
Terminals 1 and 2 share one large building at Menara. After passport control, baggage reclaim and customs, walk out through the arrivals exit, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. The car is parked a short walk away. The taxi rank and the stop for airport bus 19 are just outside the terminal.
Terminals 1 and 2 at Menara share one large building. After passport control, baggage reclaim and customs, walk out through the arrivals exit, where your driver waits holding a sign with your name. Passport queues can be slow when several flights land together; your 60 minutes of free waiting, counted from the time you actually land, cover that. We track your flight, and the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost.
For the flight home, your driver collects you from the gate or square where you were dropped, or from your hotel door outside the walls, and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time. Ask your riad to walk you and your bags out to the car.

Where we drop off in and around the medina
The medina’s lanes are mostly car-free, so for riads the drop-off is at the nearest gate, square or car park, usually a walk of a few minutes. Many riads send a member of staff to meet the car, and porters with handcarts work at the busier gates for heavy luggage. Hotels on the main avenues and everywhere outside the walls are door to door. Share your riad’s name and a map pin when you book.
Jemaa el-Fnaa and Riad Zitoun
Riads around the main square and in the lanes to its south-east. Cars stop near the Koutoubia or the edge of the square, depending on where your lane begins.
Mouassine and Bab Laksour
The lanes north-west of the square, home to many boutique riads. Cars stop at Bab Laksour, the gate on this side, a few steps from the first lanes.
Kasbah and Mellah
The southern quarter around the Saadian Tombs, Bab Agnaou, the Bahia Palace and the old Jewish quarter. Some streets here take cars, so the walk is often shorter.
Bab Doukkala and Ben Youssef
The northern medina, near the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the souks. Cars approach from the outer boulevard to the gate nearest your riad.
Hivernage, Gueliz and the Palmeraie
Hotels and villas outside the walls, from Hivernage’s resort hotels and Gueliz’s modern streets to the palm groves of the Palmeraie north of the city. Always door to door.

When to book your Marrakech Medina transfer
Marrakech's main season runs from October to May. Average highs are about 19 °C in January and 26 °C in April, comfortable for walking the souks, while July and August average close to 38 °C. In summer, morning and evening arrivals are the most pleasant, and the car's air conditioning is welcome after the walk out of the terminal.
Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest weeks for riads, and many have only a handful of rooms, so book both the stay and the transfer early.
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February and end around 8 March, with the exact dates confirmed locally by the sighting of the new moon. Daily life slows during daylight. Traffic builds in the hour before sunset as people head home to break the fast, then the streets go quiet. If you land in the late afternoon during Ramadan, allow a little extra time.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Marrakech Medina
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 15–30 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport bus 19 | 20–25 minutes + walk | Runs about every 30 minutes from 07:00 to 21:30, from a stop about 100 m from the terminal behind the taxi rank, to Arset El Bilk by Jemaa el-Fnaa. Then you walk into the lanes with your bags. |
| Petit taxi | 15–30 minutes | Waiting outside arrivals day and night. UK travel advice is to agree the fare before setting off or check that the meter is running. The taxi still stops at the edge of the medina, like any car. |
| Rental car | 15–30 minutes + parking | Useful later for the Atlas or the coast, but no help in the medina: the lanes are car-free, so you will need to leave the car in a car park outside the walls or near a gate. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Marrakech Medina transfer suits
First-time riad guests
No hunting for an unmarked door in a maze of lanes. Your driver takes you to the meeting point your riad recommends, where staff usually wait to walk you in.
Late-night arrivals
Bus 19 stops running at 21:30, and the medina lanes are quiet after dark. A pre-booked driver is waiting whatever time your flight lands, with the handover already arranged.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup, and a minivan with room for up to seven people and their luggage, all at one fixed price for the car rather than per person.
Celebrations and groups
Heading to a Palmeraie villa or a desert camp in the Agafay for a wedding or birthday? Minibuses carry up to 16 guests, and we can send separate cars for different flights.
Plan the rest of your Marrakech stay
- Save your riad’s phone number and a map pin before you fly. The lanes have few street signs, and the riad can send someone to find you if you get lost.
- Withdraw some dirhams before you leave the airport. Small notes are handy for porters, tips and the first mint tea in the souk.
- In the medina, only use guides with an official badge. UK travel advice warns about unofficial guides offering directions in the lanes.
- See the big sights early. The Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the Jardin Majorelle in Gueliz are calmest soon after opening.
- Day trips to the Atlas Mountains, the Ourika valley or the Agafay desert can start from your riad. Imlil is about an hour and a half away, the Agafay camps under an hour.
- Combining Morocco with Spain or Portugal? We also cover arrivals at Málaga for Marbella and Lisbon Airport into the city.
- For the flight home, leave the medina about two and a half hours before departure, and three hours in the busiest weeks. Allow for queues at security and passport control.
