Qatar is compact, and almost everywhere a visitor goes is within an hour of the airport. Doha Airport, Hamad International, sits on the eastern edge of the capital: the souqs and museums of the old centre are about 20 minutes away, the towers of West Bay about 25, and Lusail and its Formula 1 circuit about 45.

Driving and road rules
Qatar drives on the right, on fast multi-lane expressways and ring roads. UK government advice is that visitors who want to drive need both the 1968 International Driving Permit and their UK licence, and that it is illegal to use a phone at the wheel. There is zero tolerance for drink-driving, and even rude gestures in traffic can be prosecuted.
Unpaid traffic fines can stop you leaving the country, so drivers should check the Metrash2 app before flying home. With a transfer, none of this is your concern: your driver handles the roads, and you are dropped at the door.
Best time to travel
The comfortable season runs from about October to April, with average highs around 22°C in January. From June to August they average above 40°C. The Qatar Grand Prix runs at Lusail from 27 to 29 November 2026, and Qatar National Day falls on 18 December. Ramadan in 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February; during the fast, do not eat or drink in public in daylight, including in a car.
Getting around Doha
The Doha Metro has three lines, Red, Green and Gold, which meet at Msheireb, and the Red Line serves the airport, West Bay, Katara and Lusail. Turquoise Karwa taxis can be hailed or booked on the Karwa app, and ride-hailing apps operate across the city. For the airport run with luggage, a pre-booked car takes you from the arrivals hall to your door without changes.

Do you cover all of Qatar?

Can I take the metro from Doha Airport instead?
Yes, the Red Line runs from the airport station into the city and on to West Bay. It suits light travellers; with suitcases, children or a late arrival, a car to the door is simpler.
Is there anything I should not bring into Qatar?
Vapes and e-cigarettes are illegal in Qatar and can be confiscated at customs, and some medicines legal elsewhere are restricted. Check the UK or your own government’s travel advice before you fly.
