Cape Town Airport to V&A Waterfront by private car
A private Cape Town Airport to V&A Waterfront transfer covers the 23 km from the arrivals hall to your hotel in about 25 minutes, or up to 45 in weekday rush hours. Your driver meets you inside the terminal at Cape Town International, loads the bags and takes the N2 freeway straight into the city.
Public transport is thin on this route. The MyCiTi airport bus to the Civic Centre is listed as temporarily suspended, so the realistic choices are an e-hailing app, a metered taxi from the airport's own kiosks, or a car booked in advance. After a long-haul flight, a booked car means no queue at the rank and no walk to the app pickup zone in the parkade with your cases.
The price is fixed for the whole vehicle, so a family of four or a group of friends pays the same as a couple. The V&A also makes a good base for the rest of South Africa: the Winelands are under an hour away, and we quote onward trips from your hotel door.

The drive from CPT to V&A Waterfront
From the terminal, your driver follows Airport Approach Road onto the N2, the main freeway into Cape Town, called Settlers Way on this stretch. It runs west across the Cape Flats for about 10 km, then merges with the M3 at Hospital Bend, below Devil's Peak. From there Nelson Mandela Boulevard carries you over the Foreshore, past the convention centre, and Dock Road leads into the V&A. The whole route is about 23 km, and there are no tolls on it.
This is also the route the UK Foreign Office points travellers to: its advice for Cape Town airport is to stay on the N2 and M3 rather than the R300, and to use Airport Approach Road rather than Borcherd's Quarry Road. Some navigation apps suggest the R300 and N1 when the N2 is jammed; the main-road route keeps to that advice.
In normal traffic the drive takes about 25 minutes. The N2 into the city is slowest on weekday mornings, roughly 06:30 to 09:00, when Hospital Bend backs up and the trip can stretch to 45 minutes. In the late afternoon the outbound side is the busy one, which matters more for your flight home. Evenings, nights and weekends are usually quick.
For most of the way, Table Mountain and Devil's Peak fill the windscreen, and Lion's Head appears as you drop onto the Foreshore. On summer afternoons the south-easter often pours a layer of cloud over the mountain's edge, the famous tablecloth, and the harbour cranes and the old grain silo tell you that you have arrived.

Meeting your driver at Cape Town Airport
Cape Town International has one Central Terminal Building, with domestic and international arrivals both on the ground floor. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall on your side of the terminal, holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the car in the airport parkades a few minutes away. App-based taxis use a separate pickup area in Parkade 2. The airport asks passengers not to accept rides from unsolicited drivers in the hall.
Cape Town International has one Central Terminal Building, with domestic and international arrivals on the ground floor. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall on your side of the terminal holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the car, parked a few minutes away in the airport parkades. If anyone else in the hall offers you a ride, say no: the airport itself asks passengers not to accept unsolicited drivers.
Add your flight number when you book and we track it, so the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. Your driver's name and number reach you before the trip.
For the ride back, your driver collects you from your hotel entrance and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off at the V&A Waterfront
The V&A Waterfront is a working harbour and a privately run neighbourhood with its own roads and car parks. Hotels have their own driveways, so most stays are door to door. The quaysides, Victoria Wharf and the Clock Tower area are largely pedestrian, so for a restaurant, a ferry or an apartment block your driver stops at the nearest road access. Send us the building name with your booking.
Silo District and the Cruise Terminal
Zeitz MOCAA, The Silo Hotel and Radisson RED sit around the old grain silo, with the Cape Town Cruise Terminal next door. Cruise passengers are dropped at the terminal building.
Clock Tower District
Home to the Nelson Mandela Gateway, where the Robben Island ferries leave. The car stops at the closest road point and the Gateway is a short walk away.
Victoria Wharf and the quays
The main shopping centre, the Two Oceans Aquarium and hotels such as the Victoria & Alfred. Hotels have their own entrances; for apartments, give us the building name.
Portswood Ridge and Granger Bay
The quieter western side, with the UCT Graduate School of Business, Breakwater Lodge and the Granger Bay waterfront, close to Mouille Point and Green Point.
Canal District
Apartments, offices and hotels along the canal that links the V&A to the city centre, near Battery Park. Ideal for longer stays; tell us which entrance to use.

When to book your V&A Waterfront transfer
Cape Town's busy season runs from October to April, peaking over Christmas, New Year and the long school holidays in December and January. Summers are warm and dry, and most of the year's rain falls between June and September. From spring through summer the south-easter, the "Cape Doctor", can blow hard for days, and the Table Mountain Cableway may close in bad weather.
The Cape Town Cycle Tour is on 14 March 2027 and brings large road closures around the city and peninsula. If you land that weekend, tell us your hotel and we will plan around the closures and suggest a pickup time.
For the smoothest ride in, land outside the weekday morning peak: a midday or evening arrival usually means a clear N2. For departures, the outbound N2 is busiest on weekday afternoons, so allow extra time if your flight leaves in the early evening.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach V&A Waterfront
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 25–45 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| E-hailing app (Uber, Bolt) | 25–45 minutes + pickup wait | Pickups are from the e-hailing area in Parkade 2, a walk from arrivals with your bags. The UK Foreign Office advises booking only through the app and warns of drivers posing as app drivers at airports. |
| Metered taxi | 25–45 minutes | Authorised operators work from the transport kiosks and the domestic arrivals desk in the terminal. The airport asks passengers not to accept rides from unsolicited taxi or shuttle drivers in the hall. |
| MyCiTi airport bus | Currently suspended | The A01 bus from the airport to the Civic Centre is listed as temporarily suspended. Even when it runs, you need a second bus or a taxi from the Civic Centre to reach the V&A. |
| Shared shuttle | 40–90 minutes | Shuttle companies leave from the international inner lane, with staff meeting passengers in arrivals. You pay per seat, but you wait for other passengers and often stop at their hotels first. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the V&A Waterfront transfer suits
Long-haul arrivals
Many overnight flights from Europe land into the morning rush. A driver in the hall means no app, no parkade hunt and no rank queue, just a straight run to the hotel.
Families
Child seats fitted before pickup if you tell us the ages, and one price for the car. A minivan takes up to seven people with their luggage.
Cruise passengers
The Cape Town Cruise Terminal is inside the V&A, next to the Silo District. We drop you at the terminal on embarkation day and can collect you when you come ashore.
Conference and business travellers
The convention centre is on the way in. Add a stop at the CTICC for registration, then carry on to your hotel, all on one fixed price agreed in advance.
Plan the rest of your V&A Waterfront stay
- Book Robben Island before you fly. Tours leave the Nelson Mandela Gateway at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 and take about three and a half hours including the ferry crossing.
- Check the weather before going up Table Mountain. The cableway may close in bad weather, and tickets bought online stay valid for seven days, so you can wait for a clear morning.
- Arriving in the morning? Ask your hotel about early check-in or bag storage when you book the room, so you can walk the quays while the room is made ready.
- Planning a few days in the Winelands? The V&A is about 45 minutes from Stellenbosch and an hour or so from Franschhoek; see our Stellenbosch and Franschhoek transfers.
- Flying on to Johannesburg for business? We meet you at O.R. Tambo too, with a car for the OR Tambo to Sandton run.
- For your flight home, leave the V&A about two hours before a domestic departure and three and a half hours before an international one. Add 20 minutes on weekday afternoons.
