Zanzibar airport to Nungwi: what to expect
Nungwi sits at the northern tip of Unguja, the main island of Zanzibar, and the drive from Zanzibar airport to Nungwi is 63 km on the main road north. Your driver meets you as you walk out of arrivals at Abeid Amani Karume International, skirts the edge of Zanzibar City and drives up through the villages to your hotel in about 1 hour 15 minutes.
The alternatives are a taxi at the airport, or a ride into Stone Town and a dala dala minibus north, which costs little but means a change with luggage. The UK Foreign Office advises declining rides from strangers and booking through your hotel or a reputable company. A pre-booked transfer gives you a named driver and one fixed price for the whole vehicle, agreed before you fly.
Nungwi is also the gateway to Kendwa, just down the coast, which is on the same quote. For visas, insurance and the rest of the island, see our guide to airport transfers in Tanzania.

The drive from ZNZ to Nungwi
From the terminal your driver follows Nyerere Road north towards Zanzibar City, passing the outskirts of Stone Town without entering its narrow lanes, then picks up Malawi Road, the main road up the west side of the island. That is the line on the diagram below: about 63 km, all on tarmac.
The first stretch runs through the busy northern suburbs and Mtoni to Bububu, close to the west coast, where a railway once ran from Stone Town. The road then turns inland through the farmland and villages around Mahonda and Kinyasini, and heads north through Kivunge and past Fukuchani for the last run up the peninsula to Nungwi. It is a steady drive rather than a fast one: the road slows in every village, and the stretch nearest the city is the busiest.
Police checkpoints are common on Tanzanian roads, and your driver will stop if waved over. Zanzibar drives on the left. Visitors who want to drive themselves need a local Zanzibar driving permit as well as their licence, usually arranged by the hire company; with a transfer you skip the paperwork. Fuel is included in your fixed price.
Allow about 1 hour 15 minutes in normal traffic and up to 1 hour 35 minutes when the town end is congested or after heavy rain, which can slow traffic and cause local flooding. Local drivers know the road well, including where it narrows through the villages.

Meeting your driver at Zanzibar Airport
International flights use Terminal 3, the newer building; domestic flights use Terminal 2. After health screening, immigration (with your e-visa or a visa on arrival), the check for the mandatory Zanzibar inbound travel insurance, baggage reclaim and customs, walk out through arrivals. Your driver waits there with a name sign. Give us your flight number and we send the driver to the right terminal.
International flights use Terminal 3 at Abeid Amani Karume International; domestic flights use Terminal 2. Give us your flight number and we send the driver to the right building.
On arrival you pass health screening and immigration. Have your Tanzanian e-visa ready, or queue for a single-entry visa on arrival, and be ready to show the mandatory Zanzibar inbound travel insurance, which you can buy online before you fly. After baggage reclaim and customs, walk out through arrivals, where your driver waits with a name sign. The pickup moves with any delay at no cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you land, which helps when the visa queue is long.
For the return, your driver meets you at your hotel reception and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Nungwi and Kendwa
Nungwi is a large village on a narrow peninsula, with hotels on both sides of the point and many reached by short sandy lanes. Your driver takes you to the hotel gate or the nearest point the car can reach. Tell us your hotel name, or send a map pin for a villa or guesthouse, and the driver will plan the last few hundred metres.
West Nungwi
The busier side of the point, with the main beach, bars and restaurants and many of the larger hotels. The beach faces west, so sunset is the main event.
East Nungwi
Quieter and more laid-back, with resorts spread along the eastern shore of the peninsula, a few minutes further by road from the village centre.
Kendwa
The next beach south of Nungwi, a few minutes by road, with a cluster of resorts along the sand. Same quote, same driver.
Nungwi village
Guesthouses and small hotels in the lanes behind the beach. The village grew up as a fishing centre and was long known for building dhows.

When to book your Nungwi transfer
Zanzibar's busiest months follow the dry weather: June to October, and December to February, when Nungwi's hotels fill and the road north carries the most transfer traffic. Christmas and New Year are the peak weeks, so book early for those dates.
The UK Foreign Office says Tanzania's rainy seasons generally run from the end of March to May, and from October to mid-December. Heavy rain and strong winds can disrupt travel, and the drive north can take longer in a downpour. We track your flight whatever the weather.
Zanzibar is mainly Muslim. During Ramadan, expected in February and March 2027, avoid eating or drinking in public outside hotels and restaurants. All year, dress modestly away from the resorts, especially in Stone Town: the authorities can fine visitors for inappropriate clothing.
For the calmest arrival, aim for a daytime landing: the drive north is easier to enjoy in daylight, and you reach Nungwi in time for the sunset on the west beach.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Nungwi
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 1h 15min – 1h 35min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport taxi | 1¼–1½ hours | Taxis are available at the airport. Agree the fare before you set off, and use an official or reputable driver; the Foreign Office advises declining offers from strangers. |
| Taxi + dala dala | 2½–3 hours | A taxi into Stone Town, then the dala dala minibus on route 116 from Creek Road to Nungwi, which runs through the day. Low cost, but a change with luggage, and dala dalas can have poor safety standards. |
| Hotel transfer | About 1¼ hours | Many Nungwi hotels can arrange an airport pickup. Compare the price for your whole party: ours is one fixed price for the vehicle, with flight tracking and an hour of waiting included. |
| Rental car | 1¼–1½ hours plus pick-up | You need a local Zanzibar driving permit as well as your licence, usually arranged by the hire company. Driving is on the left, roads are busy near town, and police checkpoints are common. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Nungwi transfer suits
Honeymooners
Nungwi’s west-facing beach is made for sunsets, and nobody wants a minibus change on the first evening. The car goes straight from arrivals to your hotel gate.
Safari-and-beach trips
Flying in from the mainland after a safari? Domestic flights use Terminal 2. Tell us the flight and your driver meets you there, with room for duffels and camera kit.
Families
Child seats on request, fitted for the ages you give us, and one price for the whole car. A minivan takes up to seven people with luggage for the hour-plus drive.
Divers and groups
Dive groups and friends sharing a villa fit in a minibus for 8 to 16, with one booking and one price instead of a string of taxis from the airport.
Plan the rest of your Nungwi stay
- Apply for your Tanzanian e-visa on the official immigration site, visa.immigration.go.tz, and buy the mandatory Zanzibar inbound travel insurance online before you fly to save time at the airport.
- Pack something that covers shoulders and knees for Stone Town and village visits. The Foreign Office notes that visitors can be fined for inappropriate clothing away from the resorts.
- Nungwi has a small sea-turtle aquarium in the village, and its shore was long a dhow-building yard. Both make a gentle first morning once you have slept off the flight.
- Stone Town is about an hour back down the same road. Add a stop there to your departure transfer and your luggage stays in the car while you explore.
- For your flight home, leave Nungwi about four hours before an international departure: up to an hour and a half on the road, plus check-in and security.
- Island-hopping the Indian Ocean? Our Seychelles airport transfer to Beau Vallon and Mauritius airport run to Belle Mare work the same way.
- Connecting through Doha? Break the journey with a night in the city; we drive from Hamad International to West Bay.
