Puerto Vallarta to Punta Mita by private car
Punta Mita sits at the northern tip of the Bay of Banderas, on a peninsula in the state of Nayarit. Getting from Puerto Vallarta to Punta Mita by private car takes about 45 minutes to an hour for the 39 km: your driver meets you outside Puerto Vallarta International Airport, follows Highway 200 north around the bay and turns west on the Punta de Mita road to the point.
Most visitors are heading to one of two places. The Punta Mita resort community covers 1,500 acres, with the Four Seasons, the St. Regis, two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses and private villas. Next door, the fishing village of Punta de Mita has the beaches, restaurants and the boats to the Marieta Islands.
With luggage, the practical choices are an airport taxi, a shared shuttle or a booked car, and only the booked car is waiting when you walk out. One price covers the whole vehicle, agreed before you fly. Heading to Baja as well? See our San José del Cabo transfer.

The drive from PVR to Punta Mita
From the terminal, your driver joins Federal Highway 200 heading north. Within two kilometres the road crosses the Ameca River, the border between Jalisco and Nayarit, and runs on past Nuevo Vallarta, Mezcales and Bucerías, with the bay off to your left. This stretch through the towns, with its traffic lights and junctions, is where the time goes at busy hours.
Just past Bucerías the route leaves Highway 200 for the Punta de Mita road. A bypass skirts La Cruz de Huanacaxtle inland, and the road then runs west along the northern shore of the bay to the point.
Allow 45 minutes to an hour in normal traffic, and up to 1 hour 10 minutes on busy afternoons on Highway 200. The Four Seasons and the St. Regis are a few minutes beyond the village, inside the resort community. Punta Mita is a private community: tell us the hotel, villa or residence name when you book so your driver can be announced at the entrance and go straight to the door.
One quirk of the route: when you cross the Ameca River you leave Jalisco for Nayarit, but the municipality of Bahía de Banderas, which includes Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerías and Punta Mita, keeps Central time, the same as Puerto Vallarta. Most of the rest of Nayarit is an hour behind. If your phone’s clock looks an hour out when you arrive, set it to Mexico City time and trust the hotel clock for tours and dinner bookings.

Meeting your driver at Puerto Vallarta Airport
Puerto Vallarta has one main passenger terminal, with a domestic concourse and an international one; a new terminal has been under construction, so we check where your flight arrives. After immigration and customs you pass through a hall of timeshare, tour and transport sellers. Walk straight through without stopping and out of the building, where your driver waits with a sign showing your name. We send the driver's name and WhatsApp number before you fly.

Walk straight through without stopping: your driver is outside the building, holding a sign with your name. We send their name and WhatsApp number before you fly.
Add your flight number and we track it. If you land late, the pickup moves with the flight at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start from the actual landing time.
For the return, your driver collects you from your resort or villa and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Punta Mita
Punta Mita covers a whole peninsula. The resort community takes up most of it, with hotels and villas reached through its own entrance, while the village of Punta de Mita sits on the bay side with its beaches and fishing boats. More resorts line the coast towards Litibú and Higuera Blanca. Every address is door to door; just give us the exact property name.
Four Seasons and St. Regis
The two resorts inside the Punta Mita community, about 41 km from the airport. Your driver is announced at the entrance and takes you to the lobby.
Villas and residences in the community
Private homes and enclaves such as El Encanto and Hacienda de Mita. Send the villa name and any access instructions from your host with your booking.
Punta de Mita village
The fishing village on the bay, with the beaches of El Anclote and Corral del Risco, restaurants and the boats to the Marieta Islands.
Litibú and the coast road
Other resorts on the peninsula, such as the W, the Conrad and the Iberostar Playa Mita at Litibú, are spread along the coast road. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.
Sayulita and San Pancho
The beach towns north of the peninsula, Sayulita about 15 km from Punta de Mita. We drive there direct from the airport, or on from Punta Mita later in your trip.

When to book your Punta Mita transfer
High season runs from November to April, with dry weather and the most flights into Puerto Vallarta; Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest weeks for the resorts. Humpback whales spend the winter in the Bay of Banderas, and the official whale-watching season runs from mid-December to the end of March.
The Marieta Islands National Park, reached by boat from Corral del Risco in the village, is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and its Hidden Beach admits only 116 visitors a day. If it is on your list, reserve before you travel rather than after you land.
The summer months are hotter and quieter. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November. If a storm affects your flight, message us on WhatsApp: the pickup follows the flight, but under our policy a landing at a different airport needs a new booking.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Punta Mita
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 45 min – 1h 10min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport taxi or van | 45–70 minutes | Sold at the authorised transport counters in the arrivals area. Quick once you are moving, but you queue after the flight and the fare is set on the day. |
| Shared shuttle | 1–2 hours | Less per seat, but it waits to fill up and drops at resorts in Nuevo Vallarta and Bucerías on the way, so Punta Mita, the furthest point, usually comes last. |
| Rental car | 45–70 minutes plus the desk | Handy for day trips to Sayulita and San Pancho, but add the rental paperwork and insurance, then Highway 200 through the towns after a long flight. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Punta Mita transfer suits
Honeymooners and couples
Straight from arrivals to the Four Seasons or the St. Regis, with no shuttle stops in Nuevo Vallarta. Ask for an executive sedan if you want a smarter car for the occasion.
Families in villas
Child seats fitted before pickup, a minivan for up to seven with luggage, and a supermarket stop on the way so the villa is stocked from the first evening.
Golfers
Punta Mita’s two Jack Nicklaus Signature courses are open to residents and guests of the two resorts. A minivan carries the clubs; tell us how many golf bags.
Weddings and groups
Minibuses for 8 to 16 guests, and separate cars for guests landing on different flights. Send us the arrival times and we quote each pickup.
Plan the rest of your Punta Mita stay
- Book the Marieta Islands before you fly. The national park is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Hidden Beach takes only 116 visitors a day, so high-season dates go early.
- Whale season runs from mid-December to the end of March. Ask your hotel to book a boat trip early in your stay, so a rough-sea day still leaves time to go again.
- If your phone shows the wrong time, set it to Mexico City time (UTC−6). Punta Mita keeps the same clock as Puerto Vallarta, though most of Nayarit is an hour behind.
- Sayulita is about 15 km north of Punta de Mita. It makes an easy afternoon out for the beach and the shops, and we can quote the return trip from your hotel.
- Combining coasts? We also drive from Los Cabos airport to Cabo San Lucas, and on the Caribbean side from Cancún to Playa del Carmen.
- For your flight home, leave Punta Mita about three and a half hours before an international departure, and add time in the Christmas and Easter weeks.
