Cabo airport to San José del Cabo, door to door
San José del Cabo is the closest town to the airport and the older of the two Cabos, founded as a mission in 1730. A private Cabo airport to San José del Cabo transfer covers the 14 km from Los Cabos International Airport in about 15 to 20 minutes: your driver meets you outside the terminal, loads the bags and takes Highway 1 south to the old town, the beachfront hotel zone or the marina at Puerto Los Cabos.
On a ride this short, the case for booking is not the distance. It is the arrival. After customs at SJD you walk through a hall of timeshare and activity sellers, and taxis and shared shuttles are sold at counters on the spot, with the shuttles stopping at several hotels. With a car booked, you walk past all of it to a driver holding your name, and the price for the whole vehicle is agreed before you fly.

The drive from SJD to San José del Cabo
From Terminal 2, which handles international flights, or Terminal 1, used for domestic and some international flights, your driver follows the airport access road to Federal Highway 1, the Carretera Transpeninsular that runs the length of Baja California. On this stretch it is called Boulevard Mauricio Castro, and it heads south for about 10 km through the districts on the northern edge of San José, past Santa Rosa, to the edge of the historic centre.
For the old town, your driver turns off towards Plaza Mijares, the main square, a few minutes from the highway. For the hotel zone, the route continues down Boulevard Mijares to the Paseo Malecón San José along the beach, about 16 km in all. Puerto Los Cabos and La Playita sit on the far side of the San José estuary, also about 16 km from the terminal.
A toll road, the Libramiento San José del Cabo, also starts by the airport and skirts the town. Whether it saves time depends on where you are staying; if your driver uses it, the toll is already in your price.
In normal traffic the drive takes 15 to 20 minutes from Terminal 2, a little less from Terminal 1, which is closer to town. Allow up to 25 minutes when traffic through San José is heavy. Late arrivals are straightforward: it is a short drive on the main highway, with no mountain roads or tricky junctions to time.
The landscape is Baja desert, with dry scrub, cactus and bare hills, until the road drops towards the town and the Sea of Cortez.

Meeting your driver at Los Cabos Airport
Los Cabos has two main terminals: most flights from the US and Canada use Terminal 2, while Terminal 1 handles domestic and some international flights. As in Cancún, arrivals pass through a hall of timeshare and transport sellers after customs. Walk straight through without stopping and out of the building.
Your driver waits outside the terminal in the pre-booked transportation area, holding a sign with your name. We send their name and WhatsApp number before you fly.

Add your flight number when you book and we track it. If you land late, the pickup moves with the flight at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start from the actual landing time. Your driver's name and WhatsApp number reach you before you fly.
For the trip back, your driver collects you from your hotel or villa and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in San José del Cabo
San José has distinct areas, all within a few minutes of each other. The historic centre is a grid of low colonial streets around Plaza Mijares, the hotel zone lines the beach to the south, and Puerto Los Cabos sits beyond the estuary to the east. Plaza Mijares itself is pedestrian, so for hotels on the square your driver stops on the nearest street. Everywhere else is door to door.
Historic centre and Plaza Mijares
The old town around the square and the parish church of San José, with boutique hotels, restaurants and the galleries of the Art District. About 15 minutes from Terminal 2.
Hotel zone (Zona Hotelera)
Beachfront resorts along the Paseo Malecón San José, at the bottom of Boulevard Mijares. About 16 km from the airport and around 20 minutes in normal traffic.
Puerto Los Cabos and La Playita
The marina, the Puerto Los Cabos Golf Club, resorts and villas east of the San José estuary. Share the community or villa name so your driver heads for the right entrance.
Costa Azul and Palmilla
Where San José meets the Tourist Corridor: the Costa Azul surf beach and the Palmilla resorts, 17 to 20 km from the terminal, about 20 to 25 minutes.

When to book your San José del Cabo transfer
High season in Los Cabos runs from November to April, when the weather is dry and sunny. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and the spring-break weeks bring the most visitors, so book your car early for those dates. Whale season runs from December to April, when grey and humpback whales are seen offshore with their calves, and whale sharks visit the area too.
In San José itself, the Art Walk opens the galleries of the old town every Thursday evening from November to June. If you land on a Thursday afternoon, the streets around Plaza Mijares will be busy that evening, which makes it a good first night out.
Summer is hot and quieter. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November. If a storm closes the airport or your flight is diverted, message us on WhatsApp and we will help you rearrange; under our policy a pickup at a different airport is a new booking.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach San José del Cabo
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 15–25 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Shared shuttle | 30–60 minutes | Sold by counters in arrivals and by tour operators. The van waits to fill up and stops at several hotels, so San José may be the first drop or one of many. Good value for a solo traveller. |
| Airport taxi or van | 15–25 minutes | Airport transport counters sell rides on the spot from both terminals. Quick once you are moving, but you queue after the flight and only learn the fare when you get to the counter. |
| Rental car | 15–25 minutes plus the desk | Worth it if you plan day trips to Todos Santos or the East Cape. Add the rental paperwork, Mexican insurance and finding your hotel on the first evening after a long flight. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the San José del Cabo transfer suits
Couples in the old town
Boutique hotels around Plaza Mijares sit on narrow colonial streets. Your driver stops as close as the street allows, with no detours to other people’s resorts on the way.
Families
Child and booster seats fitted before pickup (tell us the ages), and a minivan for up to seven people with luggage. One price for the car, not per seat.
Golfers
Puerto Los Cabos Golf Club is a few minutes east of the old town. A minivan takes up to seven players with golf bags; tell us how many bags when you request a quote.
Villa stays and late arrivals
Add a supermarket stop on the way so the fridge is stocked on night one. Land at any hour: the pickup follows your flight, with 60 minutes of free waiting.
Plan the rest of your San José del Cabo stay
- Reset your watch when you land. Baja California Sur keeps Pacific time (UTC−7) all year, one hour behind Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta, which catches out travellers on connecting flights.
- Offers you hear in the arrivals hall are sales pitches, not part of your transfer. Your driver is already waiting outside the building, so keep walking.
- The Art Walk runs on Thursday evenings from November to June. Book a table near Plaza Mijares for that night and stroll the galleries before dinner.
- Whale-watching season runs from December to April. Book a boat trip through your hotel early in your stay, so a windy day still leaves time to go again.
- Planning a second Mexican coast on the same trip? We also drive from Puerto Vallarta airport to Punta Mita and from Cancún to Tulum’s beach hotels.
- For the flight home, leave San José about three hours before an international departure, and check whether your airline uses Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 before you set off.
