Montego Bay to Ocho Rios by private car
Ocho Rios is a resort town on Jamaica's north coast, in the parish of St Ann, known for Dunn's River Falls, its cruise pier and a string of resorts east and west of the centre. It is 96 km from Sangster International Airport, and the drive from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios takes about 1 hour 45 minutes along the North Coast Highway.
That is long enough for the vehicle to matter. A shared resort shuttle waits for other flights and may drop at other hotels along the coast first. The Knutsford Express coach is good value but runs to a timetable from its own stops. A private transfer leaves when you walk out of arrivals, stops when you ask, and costs one fixed price for the whole vehicle, agreed before you fly.

The drive from MBJ to Ocho Rios
Your driver leaves the airport and joins the North Coast Highway (A1) heading east, past Ironshore and Rose Hall on the edge of Montego Bay. Jamaica drives on the left. The highway follows the coast for almost the whole journey, with bypasses around Falmouth and Duncans.
After about 30 km it skirts Falmouth, the capital of Trelawny and one of the Caribbean's best-preserved Georgian towns, home to a large cruise port. The road continues through Duncans and Rio Bueno into St Ann, past Discovery Bay, where Columbus may have first landed in 1494, and Runaway Bay. St Ann's Bay, the parish capital and birthplace of Marcus Garvey, comes about 15 minutes before Ocho Rios; Columbus was marooned here for a year in 1503 and 1504.
The last stretch passes Mammee Bay and runs right beside Dunn's River Falls, about 3 km before the centre of Ocho Rios.
Allow about 1 hour 45 minutes in normal traffic, and up to 2 hours 15 minutes when the towns are busy or a cruise ship is in Ocho Rios. The highway itself has been improved along the way, but it passes through built-up areas, and the roads off it can be narrow, winding and poorly lit at night. If you land in the evening, the last part of the trip will be in the dark, with a driver who knows the road.
A cold drink or a jerk chicken stop on the way is a common request. Ask when you book and we include the stop in your quote.

After immigration and customs at Sangster International, you enter the arrivals hall, where tour companies and transfer operators have desks. Walk through to the arrivals area, where pre-booked drivers wait with name signs; yours will have your name. We send your driver's name and WhatsApp number before you fly.
Sangster International has one terminal. After immigration and customs, customer service staff greet arriving passengers and point them towards their transport, and tour and transfer companies have numbered desks in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall. Your driver meets you in the arrivals area with a sign showing your name, and we send their name and WhatsApp number before you fly.
Add your flight number and we track it: the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start from the actual landing time, which helps on days when immigration is busy.
For the return, your driver collects you from your resort or villa and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in and around Ocho Rios
Ocho Rios stretches along several kilometres of coast, and many of its resorts sit outside the town itself, to the east and west. Every address is door to door. Give us your resort name, or for a villa the address and a map pin, as some villas sit on hillside roads above the coast.
Ocho Rios town and Turtle Beach
Hotels in the centre, near Turtle Beach, the Island Village shopping complex and the cruise pier. About 96 km and 1 hour 45 minutes from the airport.
Mammee Bay and Dunn’s River
Resorts just west of town, such as the RIU Ocho Rios at Mammee Bay, a few minutes before the centre and close to Dunn’s River Falls.
East of Ocho Rios
Resorts and villas along the coast east of the centre, towards Tower Isle and Boscobel, where many of the more upscale hotels are. Add 10 to 20 minutes.
Runaway Bay and Discovery Bay
Resorts and villas you pass on the way, 20 to 30 minutes short of Ocho Rios, so about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes from the airport.
Oracabessa
The small town east of Ocho Rios in St Mary, close to Ian Fleming International Airport. About 2 hours 15 minutes from Sangster.
When to book your Ocho Rios transfer
Jamaica's high season runs from mid-December to mid-April, when most visitors come; Christmas, New Year and Easter (28 March 2027) are the busiest weeks for the north coast resorts. Book your car early for those dates, especially for groups.
Ocho Rios is also a cruise port. On days when a ship is in, Dunn's River Falls, Island Village and the roads through the centre are at their busiest, and the last part of the transfer can take longer. Your hotel can tell you the ship schedule for your stay.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. If a storm disrupts your flight, message us on WhatsApp: the pickup moves with the flight, and under our policy a landing at a different airport needs a new booking.
If you have the choice, a flight that lands by early afternoon means you see the coast road in daylight and reach your resort in time for dinner.

You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.

Families
Dunn’s River Falls and the town’s attractions are minutes from most resorts. Child seats fitted before pickup, and a minivan takes up to seven with luggage, for one price.
Couples at all-inclusives
Straight from arrivals to the lobby, with no shuttle stops at other resorts on a drive of almost two hours. Ask for an executive sedan if you want a smarter car.
Weddings and groups
Minibuses for 8 to 16 guests, and separate cars for guests landing at different times. Send us the flight list and we quote each pickup.
Late arrivals
The Knutsford Express office at the airport closes at 19:30. A booked car meets any flight, however late, and the pickup follows the flight if it is delayed.
Plan the rest of your Ocho Rios stay
- Dunn’s River Falls is about 3 km west of the centre. The guided climb up the terraces takes an hour to an hour and a half; wear shoes that can get wet.
- Check whether a cruise ship is in port before you visit the falls or the town centre. Ship days are the busiest, so plan beach days around them.
- Want to break the journey? Falmouth’s Georgian streets are about 30 minutes from the airport, and a short stop there or for jerk chicken is easy to add to your quote.
- Fern Gully, a 4.8 km gorge lined with hundreds of fern species, climbs inland from Ocho Rios. It makes a short scenic drive during your stay.

- For your flight home, leave Ocho Rios about four and a half hours before an international departure from Montego Bay, and add time on cruise days.
