Melbourne Airport to CBD by private car
Melbourne Airport sits at Tullamarine, about 22 km north-west of the city, and the drive from Melbourne Airport to CBD hotels takes around 30 minutes when the freeway is clear. Your driver meets you inside the terminal at Melbourne Airport, takes the Tullamarine Freeway and CityLink into town and drops you at the door, whether that is on Collins Street, in Southbank or out at Docklands.
There is no train to the airport. SkyBus is the main public option: express, frequent and good value for one or two people with light bags, but it ends at Southern Cross Station, and from there you continue by tram, taxi or on foot. A private car is simpler for a family, a group or anyone with a lot of luggage, after a long-haul flight, or when you land after SkyBus stops for the night. One fixed price covers the whole vehicle, and the CityLink tolls are included.

The drive from MEL to Melbourne CBD
From the terminals, Melbourne Drive leads straight onto the Tullamarine Freeway (M2), heading south-east past Essendon Fields, the city's main airport until 1970. Around Strathmore the freeway becomes CityLink, Melbourne's electronic toll road. For the central CBD your driver usually leaves at the Flemington Road exit and follows Flemington Road through Parkville, beside Royal Park, into Elizabeth Street at the northern edge of the grid. That is the line on the diagram, about 22 km. For Docklands, Southern Cross Station and Southbank, the driver stays on CityLink a little longer and leaves at Dynon Road or Footscray Road.
CityLink has no toll booths: tolls are charged electronically to the vehicle and are part of your fixed price.
The Tullamarine Freeway is one of Melbourne's busiest roads. Inbound it slows on weekday mornings from about 7:00 to 9:30, and outbound from about 16:00 to 18:30, which matters most for the trip back to the airport. Friday evenings before long weekends and big race days at Flemington add time too. Outside those windows, 25 to 35 minutes is normal.
The CBD is a tidy grid of wide streets, but trams run down most of them, and at some intersections cars turn right from the left lane, the famous Melbourne hook turn, to keep the tram tracks clear. Your driver handles all of that; you simply step out at the hotel entrance or the closest legal stopping point.

Meeting your driver at Melbourne Airport
Melbourne Airport's four terminals sit side by side: T2 for international flights, T1 for Qantas domestic, T3 for Virgin Australia and T4 for Jetstar domestic and Rex. Pre-booked drivers meet passengers at the airport's chauffeur meeting points inside the terminals, so your driver waits there with a name sign. The airport opened a new T123 Transport Hub for pick-ups at the first three terminals on 6 October 2026.

Pre-booked drivers meet passengers at the airport's chauffeur meeting points inside the terminals, so your driver waits there with a sign showing your name and walks you to the car. We track your flight, so delays move the pickup at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. For the return, your driver collects you from your hotel and waits up to 15 minutes; allow for the afternoon peak on the freeway.

Where we drop off in Melbourne
Every address in Melbourne is door to door. The CBD grid between Flinders Street and La Trobe Street is compact, and most hotels can be reached from a street or side lane. A few laneway hotels and the Bourke Street Mall, where only trams and pedestrians run, need a short walk from the nearest corner. Tell us your hotel and the driver plans the last few blocks.
CBD and Collins Street
Hotels and offices across the grid from Spring Street to Spencer Street, all inside the Free Tram Zone, so getting around later is easy without a car.
Southbank and South Wharf
Riverside hotels, the casino complex, the arts precinct and the convention centre across the Yarra, reached from CityLink without crossing the busiest CBD streets.
Docklands and Southern Cross
Waterfront apartments, Marvel Stadium and the hotels around Southern Cross Station, the part of the city closest to the CityLink exits.
St Kilda and South Yarra
Bayside St Kilda is about 32 km and 35 minutes from the airport in clear traffic. We quote South Yarra, Richmond and the other inner suburbs too.
Station Pier, Port Melbourne
Melbourne’s cruise terminal, about 27 km from the airport. Tell us your ship and boarding time when you book, and we plan the pickup around it.

When to book your Melbourne CBD transfer
Melbourne's events calendar sets the busy weeks. Melbourne Cup Day is Tuesday 3 November 2026, a public holiday in Melbourne, and the Spring Racing Carnival brings big crowds to Flemington Racecourse, close to CityLink, on several race days that week. The Australian Open runs from 11 to 31 January 2027 at Melbourne Park, on the eastern edge of the CBD. The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, usually in March, fills hotels across the city.
For those weeks, book your transfer when you book your flight, and allow extra time on CityLink around race and match sessions.
Victoria moves to daylight saving on the first Sunday in October and back on the first Sunday in April. Queensland stays on standard time all year, so from October to April Brisbane is an hour behind Melbourne. If you are connecting from the Gold Coast or Brisbane, check which clock your ticket shows.
Summer days can be very hot, and winter is cool and often wet. Heavy rain slows the freeway at peak hour, so allow extra time on the trip home.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Melbourne CBD
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 30–55 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| SkyBus City Express | 45–75 minutes door to door | Runs from 4am to 1am, every 10 minutes at peak times and every 15 otherwise, with an average 30-minute ride to Southern Cross Station. From there you take a tram, a taxi or walk with your bags. |
| Taxi | 30–55 minutes | Metered taxis wait at the official ranks by the terminals, and the airport puts the CBD at about a 30-minute ride. You queue at the rank rather than being met inside. |
| Rideshare | 30–55 minutes | App-booked cars collect from the ground-level forecourt outside Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and from the T4 area for Jetstar and Rex. You find the car yourself among the pick-up traffic. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Melbourne CBD transfer suits
International arrivals
After a long flight into T2, a driver at the meeting point and a car to the hotel door beat the SkyBus queue and a tram ride with suitcases.
Families
Child seats fitted before you land, space for prams and cases, and one price for the whole car. A minivan carries up to seven people with luggage.
Racing, tennis and Grand Prix visitors
Melbourne Cup week, the Australian Open and Grand Prix weekend stretch taxis and hotels. A booked car takes you to the door without waiting at a rank.
Business travellers
From T1, T2 or T3 to an office on Collins Street or in Docklands, with CityLink tolls already in the price and a driver who knows the hook turns.
Plan the rest of your Melbourne stay
- The Free Tram Zone covers the CBD, Docklands and the Queen Victoria Market, so once you are at your hotel you rarely need a car to get around the centre.
- Landing at dawn with a room not ready until the afternoon? Leave the bags at reception and head for breakfast in the laneways around Flinders Lane and Degraves Street.
- For Melbourne Cup, Australian Open or Grand Prix weeks, book your transfer when you book your flight, because demand for cars peaks on those days.
- Day trips are easy by car: Healesville in the Yarra Valley is about 70 minutes from the airport, and Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula about 2 hours. We quote both.
- Moving on to Queensland or New Zealand? We also drive Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast and Queenstown Airport to town. See our Australia overview for more.
- For the flight home, leave the CBD about 2 hours 45 minutes before an international departure and 1 hour 45 minutes before a domestic one, and add 20 to 30 minutes on weekday afternoons.
