Sydney Airport to CBD by private car: what to expect
The drive from Sydney Airport to CBD hotels is short: about 16 km by road, around 20 minutes when traffic is light and up to 45 minutes at the evening peak. Your driver meets you inside the terminal at Sydney Airport, whether you land at T1 International or the T2 and T3 domestic terminals, loads the bags once and drives you to the door.
The Airport Link train is a genuinely good option. It reaches the city in about 13 minutes and runs roughly every 10 minutes, so if you travel light and your hotel is next to a station, take it. A private car makes more sense with children, several suitcases or a group, after a long-haul flight, or when your hotel is a walk from the nearest station. The price covers the whole vehicle, not each passenger, and includes the tolls.
Flying on within Australia? We also drive from Melbourne Airport to the CBD and from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast.

The drive from SYD to Sydney CBD
From T1 International your driver usually heads east on Qantas Drive and General Holmes Drive, skirting the airport boundary, and joins Southern Cross Drive at Mascot. Southern Cross Drive runs straight into the Eastern Distributor (M1), which passes Moore Park and dives into a tunnel under Surry Hills before surfacing on the eastern edge of the CBD, by the Domain and Macquarie Street. That is the line on the diagram, about 16 km. From T2 and T3 the start is a little shorter.
For the western side of the city, around Darling Harbour, Pyrmont and Barangaroo, the driver may instead take Sydney Gateway, the toll-free link beside the airport completed in 2024, into the WestConnex tunnels and over the Anzac Bridge. The Eastern Distributor charges a toll northbound into the city, and the WestConnex tunnels are tolled too. Sydney's tolls are collected electronically and are already in your fixed price.
The slow hours are weekday mornings, roughly 7:00 to 9:30, when commuters pour into the city on the same roads, and late afternoons from about 16:00 to 18:30. Friday afternoons and wet days are slower still. Outside those windows the trip is often under 25 minutes.
Inside the CBD, most of George Street between Circular Quay and Central is a pedestrian mall with light rail, so cars use the parallel streets. Your driver stops at the hotel entrance or the nearest legal set-down point on a side street. Sydney Airport has a curfew from 11pm to 6am, so the first flights land from 6am, often just ahead of the morning rush.

Meeting your driver at Sydney Airport
At T1 International, arriving passengers leave customs through exit A or B into the arrivals hall, and the airport's official meeting point is between the two exits. That is where your driver waits with a sign showing your name. At T2 the meeting point is opposite baggage carousel 6, and at T3 your driver meets you in the arrivals area by baggage claim. The car is a short walk away.
At T1 International you leave customs through exit A or B into the arrivals hall. The airport's official meeting point is between the two exits, and that is where your driver waits with a sign showing your name. At T2 (Virgin Australia and Jetstar) the meeting point is opposite baggage carousel 6; at T3 (Qantas) your driver meets you in the arrivals area by baggage claim. From there it is a short walk to the car. You cannot walk between T1 and the domestic terminals, so tell us your flight and we will be at the right one.
We track the flight: delays move the pickup at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. For the trip back, your driver collects you from your hotel and waits up to 15 minutes.

Where we drop off in the Sydney CBD
Every CBD address is door to door wherever cars are allowed. George Street is a pedestrian mall for most of its length and parts of The Rocks are narrow lanes, so for some hotels the car stops on the nearest side street, a short walk from reception. Tell us the hotel or address and the driver plans the last few turns around one-way streets and light rail lines.
Circular Quay and The Rocks
Harbour hotels between the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, and the Overseas Passenger Terminal on Circular Quay West, where many cruise ships berth.
Martin Place, Wynyard and Town Hall
Business hotels and offices in the middle of the CBD. The driver uses the side streets where George Street is closed to cars.
Darling Harbour, Barangaroo and Pyrmont
Hotels, offices and the International Convention Centre on the western side of the city, often quickest via the WestConnex tunnels and the Western Distributor.
Haymarket and Central
Hotels around Chinatown and Central Station at the southern end of the CBD, handy for regional trains and the light rail.
White Bay Cruise Terminal
The second cruise terminal, in Balmain west of the CBD, about 12 km and 20 minutes from T1 in light traffic. Tell us your ship and boarding time.

When to book your Sydney CBD transfer
Sydney is busy all year, and a few dates change the drive. On New Year's Eve the harbour fireworks go off at 9pm and midnight, and roads around Circular Quay, The Rocks and the harbour foreshore close for the evening. If you land on 31 December, check the official road closures and agree a drop-off point with us before you fly.
Vivid Sydney, the festival of light, music and ideas, runs from 28 May to 19 June 2027 and fills the area around Circular Quay with crowds every evening. Hotels near the harbour book out early for those weeks. Summer, from December to February, is the peak holiday season.
Because of the curfew, no flights land or take off between 11pm and 6am. Many long-haul flights arrive in the early morning, so the drive in often meets the start of the weekday peak. If your room is not ready, ask the hotel to hold your bags; we can also add a stop on the way.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Sydney CBD
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 20–45 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport Link train | 25–40 minutes door to door | Trains run about every 10 minutes from the T1 and domestic stations and reach the city in around 13 minutes. A station access fee is added to the fare, and you carry your bags from the station. |
| Taxi or rideshare | 20–45 minutes | Taxis queue at ranks in front of every terminal and run on the meter, plus the airport toll. Rideshare cars collect from separate pick-up zones a short walk away, signed in green. |
| Shared shuttle | 40–75 minutes | A bookable shuttle runs from T1 to central areas including Central, Hyde Park, Kings Cross, Darling Harbour and The Rocks. It stops for other passengers, so it is slower than a private car. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Sydney CBD transfer suits
Long-haul arrivals
After a long-haul flight from Europe, Asia or the Americas, a driver at the meeting point and a short walk to the car beat the taxi queue or hauling cases through a city station.
Families
Child seats fitted before you land, room for prams and suitcases, and one price for the whole car. A minivan seats up to seven people with luggage.
Business travellers
A quiet car from T1, T2 or T3 to an office door in Martin Place, Barangaroo or North Sydney, with every toll already in the price.
Cruise passengers
Straight from the plane to the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay or to White Bay, with bags loaded once. Tell us your boarding time and we plan around it.
Plan the rest of your Sydney stay
- Landing early? Most hotels check in from mid-afternoon. Leave your bags at reception and spend the morning walking from Circular Quay round to the Opera House and the Royal Botanic Garden.
- Harbour ferries from Circular Quay are the classic way to reach Manly, Watsons Bay and Taronga Zoo. You can tap on with a contactless bank card, as on the trains.
- Staying at the beach instead? Bondi is about 30 minutes from the airport by car and Manly about 40 in clear traffic. We quote any Sydney address, not only the CBD.
- Book Opera House performances and harbour-view restaurants well ahead for weekends, school holidays and the Vivid Sydney weeks, when the waterfront is at its busiest.
- Heading on to New Zealand or Fiji? We also drive Queenstown Airport to town and Nadi Airport to Denarau. More options are on our Australia page.
- For the flight home, leave the CBD about 2 hours 45 minutes before an international departure from T1 and 1 hour 45 minutes before a domestic one, plus 20 minutes in the weekday peaks.
