Queenstown Airport to town centre: the short drive in
The trip from Queenstown Airport to town centre hotels is one of the shortest airport transfers anywhere: about 8 km along the lake, around 15 minutes when Frankton Road is clear. Your driver meets you inside the single terminal at Queenstown Airport, loads the skis, boots and suitcases, and takes you to the door of your hotel or apartment, including the steep streets above town.
For one or two people with a backpack, the Orbus public bus is a good, low-cost option and stops right outside the terminal, and taxis and Uber wait there too. A booked car is worth it when you have ski or golf bags, children, a group or a hillside address away from the bus routes, and when you want someone waiting for you rather than a taxi queue on a busy winter afternoon. The price is fixed for the vehicle, so a group of six shares one fare.
We also quote rides from the airport straight to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona, Arrowtown and Wānaka. See our New Zealand transfers for more.

The drive from ZQN to Queenstown
From the terminal your driver joins State Highway 6 at Frankton, then turns onto Frankton Road (State Highway 6A), the main road into town from the airport. It follows the north shore of the Frankton Arm of Lake Wakatipu, with views across the water to the Remarkables, and enters the town centre along Stanley Street. That is the line on the diagram: about 8 km.
Frankton Road is a two-lane road lined with houses and hotels, and it is the bottleneck. On weekday mornings and late afternoons, and on ski-season afternoons when everyone drives down from the mountains at once, the 12-minute drive can take 30. There are no tolls anywhere on the route.
In town, much of the centre around The Mall is pedestrian or one-way, with few places to stop, so the driver drops you at your hotel entrance or the closest legal set-down. Hotels on Fernhill and Queenstown Hill are reached by steep, narrow streets that can be icy on winter mornings, which is one reason many visitors leave the first drive to a local driver rather than a rental car.
Queenstown Airport has a 10pm noise curfew, so the last flights land in the evening; in winter that often means a dark and frosty drive in. If you are heading straight to the ski fields instead, the roads to all three branch off near Frankton: Coronet Peak is about 30 minutes from the terminal, The Remarkables around 40, and Cardrona 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes over the Crown Range. Like the rest of New Zealand, Queenstown drives on the left.

Meeting your driver at Queenstown Airport
Queenstown Airport has one terminal. Domestic passengers collect bags from carousel one or two; international passengers clear passport control and biosecurity first. Your driver waits inside the terminal by the arrivals exit, holding a sign with your name, then walks you a minute to the car in the terminal car park, because the kerb outside is for immediate stops only.
Queenstown Airport has one compact terminal for domestic and international flights. Domestic passengers collect bags from carousel one or two; international passengers go through passport control and biosecurity checks first. Your driver waits inside the terminal by the arrivals exit with a sign showing your name, then walks you to the car in the terminal car park, a minute away, because the kerb outside is for immediate stops only.
We track your flight, so delays move the pickup at no extra cost, and the 60 minutes of free waiting start from the actual landing. If weather diverts your flight to another airport, message us on WhatsApp: a pickup elsewhere can need a new booking. For the trip back, your driver collects you from your accommodation and waits up to 15 minutes.

Where we drop off in Queenstown
We go door to door anywhere around Queenstown and the Wakatipu basin. The town centre is compact, with pedestrian lanes around The Mall and tight one-way streets, so for a few central hotels the car stops on the nearest street. Hillside chalets and apartments get door-to-door service; share a map pin if the driveway is hard to find, and tell us about steep access.
Town centre and the lakefront
Hotels around The Mall, Steamer Wharf and Marine Parade, a few minutes’ walk from the Skyline Gondola, the restaurants and the lake ferries.
Fernhill and Sunshine Bay
Hillside hotels and apartments west of the centre along Lake Esplanade and up the slopes, about 9 km and 15 minutes from the airport in clear traffic.
Frankton Road and Queenstown Hill
Lakeside hotels along the road into town and chalets on the hill above it. Tell us about steep or narrow driveways when you book.
Kelvin Heights and Jacks Point
Golf-course lodges and holiday homes across the Kawarau Falls bridge, about 8 to 9 km and 10 to 15 minutes from the terminal.
Arrowtown and Arthurs Point
The old gold-mining village of Arrowtown is about 15 km from the airport, and Arthurs Point sits on the road up to Coronet Peak.

When to book your Queenstown transfer
Queenstown has two high seasons. The ski season usually runs from mid-June to early October, with July and August the most reliable months for snow, and the airport and Frankton Road are at their busiest on winter weekends and in the school holidays. Summer, from December to February, brings long evenings, hikers, cyclists and wedding parties.
Winter mornings often bring frost and ice to the hill streets and the ski field roads. New Zealand's official driving advice is to be prepared for snow from June to August and to carry chains you know how to fit. Cardrona requires every vehicle on its mountain road to carry chains, even on clear days, and each ski area posts its road status and chain rules every morning.
The Queenstown Marathon runs on Saturday 14 November 2026, so expect busier roads around the course that weekend. Because of the 10pm curfew there are no late-night landings, but winter flights often arrive after dark; a booked car means no wait at the taxi rank in the cold.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Queenstown
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 15–30 min | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Orbus public bus | 20–35 minutes | Buses stop just outside the terminal about every 15 minutes and run to the town centre. Fares are lowest with a Bee Card, but you walk from the stop to your hotel with all your bags. |
| Taxi or Uber | 15–30 minutes | Taxi ranks and the rideshare zone are next to the terminal, and Uber is the only app service at the airport. The airport warns that waits get longer at busy times. |
| Shared shuttle | 20–45 minutes | A door-to-door shared van meets every flight and drops passengers at their accommodation in turn, so the ride usually takes longer than a private car and you wait for others. |
| Rental car | 15–30 minutes plus parking | Useful for touring the region, but parking in the town centre is scarce, and in winter you need chains and confidence on icy hill roads. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Queenstown transfer suits

Room for skis, boards and boot bags in a minivan, and a driver who can take you from the plane straight to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables or Cardrona on arrival day.
Families
Child seats fitted before you land, no wait at the taxi rank with tired children, and one price for the whole car rather than per person.
Weddings and groups
Queenstown is a popular place to marry. Minibuses take up to 16 guests, and we can meet guests arriving on different flights through the day.
Golfers
Jacks Point is ten minutes from the terminal, and the Arrowtown courses about twenty. Tell us how many golf bags you are bringing and we size the vehicle.
Plan the rest of your Queenstown stay
- Ski field roads change by the hour in winter. Check each ski area’s morning report for road status and chain rules before you head up.
- Book dinner for your first night before you fly in July, August or over Christmas, when the town centre restaurants fill early.
- Staying in Wānaka? It is about 65 km from the airport over the Crown Range, whose summit at 1,076 m is New Zealand’s highest sealed pass, or longer via Cromwell when the pass has snow.
- Milford Sound is a long day by road via Te Anau, about two hours from the airport before the Milford Road even starts. Many visitors take a coach tour or a scenic flight.
- Coming from Australia or Fiji? We also drive Sydney Airport to the CBD, Melbourne Airport to the city and Nadi Airport to Denarau.
- For your flight home, leave town about 2 hours 30 minutes before an international departure and 1 hour 30 minutes before a domestic one, a little more on ski-season afternoons.
