Colombo Airport to Galle by private car
Sri Lanka’s international airport is at Katunayake, about 32 km north of Colombo, while Galle sits on the far south-west coast. A private transfer from Colombo Airport to Galle links the two on the island’s expressways: your driver meets you at Colombo Airport, loads the bags once and drives the 160 km to Galle Fort in about 2 hours 20 minutes, without going through central Colombo.
No train runs from the airport to Galle. Public transport means a bus into Colombo for the coastal train, or a bus to the Makumbura transport centre for an expressway coach, and with suitcases after a night flight neither is much fun. Plenty of international flights land at Katunayake between midnight and dawn, when a car waiting in the arrival lobby is by far the easiest way south.
The price is fixed for the whole vehicle, so couples, families and groups each pay one fare. We also drive to the beach towns along the south coast, from Hikkaduwa to Mirissa, and anywhere else in Sri Lanka.

The drive from CMB to Galle
From the terminal, your driver joins the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway (E03) a few minutes away and heads south towards the city. At Kerawalapitiya the route switches to the Outer Circular Expressway (E02), which swings around the eastern side of Colombo to Kottawa, where the Southern Expressway (E01) begins. From there it is a straight run of nearly 100 km south, inland through paddy fields, wetlands and low green hills, to the Galle interchange at Pinnaduwa. The last few kilometres follow the port access road and the coast road through Galle town, past the cricket ground to the fort’s Main Gate.
All three expressways are toll roads, and the tolls are included in your price. In normal traffic the drive takes about 2 hours 20 minutes. Allow up to 3 hours at weekday rush hours around Colombo and on holiday weekends.
The old route is the A2 Galle Road down the coast through Kalutara, Bentota and Hikkaduwa. It is lovely to look at but slow, with buses, tuk-tuks and village traffic all the way, and from the airport it can take four hours or more. If you would like to see part of the coast, your driver can leave the expressway early and finish along the shore; tell us when you book so we can include it in the quote.
The expressways are quiet at night, so late arrivals often make the quickest trips. On the final stretch through Galle and along the coast road, expect tuk-tuks, cyclists, pedestrians and the odd dog asleep on the warm tarmac after dark.

Meeting your driver at Colombo Airport
International flights use the main terminal. After immigration, baggage reclaim and customs, you walk out into the arrival lobby, where your driver waits holding a board with your name. Banks, ATMs, mobile phone counters and the airport taxi desks are in the same hall, so you can change money or buy a SIM before you meet. The car is parked a short walk from the terminal.

After immigration, baggage reclaim and customs you walk out into the arrival lobby, where your driver waits holding a board with your name. Banks, ATMs and mobile phone counters are in the same hall, so you can sort out rupees and a local SIM before you meet.
Add your flight number when you book and we track it: the pickup moves with any delay at no extra cost, and your 60 minutes of free waiting start when you actually land. Your driver’s name and phone number reach you before the trip, and you can reach us on WhatsApp at any hour. For the return, your driver collects you from your Galle hotel and waits up to 15 minutes from the agreed time.

Where we drop off in Galle and along the south coast
Galle Fort is a living town rather than a museum. Cars enter through the Main Gate and can drive the narrow grid of streets inside the ramparts, so most fort hotels are door to door, though on the tightest lanes your driver may stop a few steps away. Beyond the fort we drive to any hotel or villa on the south coast; share a map pin for villas on unmarked lanes.
Galle Fort
Boutique hotels, cafés and galleries inside the Dutch-built ramparts, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Door to door on most streets.
Unawatuna and Rumassala
A sheltered bay a short drive east of the fort, below Rumassala hill and Jungle Beach. Guesthouses and hotels line the beach road.
Thalpe, Habaraduwa and Koggala
A strip of villas and beach hotels 10 to 20 km east of Galle, with Koggala lake and the stilt fishermen’s shore close by.
Hikkaduwa
The reef and surf town about 20 km up the coast from Galle. Your driver comes in through Galle or leaves the expressway earlier, depending on traffic.
Ahangama, Weligama and Mirissa
Surf beaches and the whale-watching harbour at Mirissa, further east on the same expressway, about 2½ to 3¼ hours from the airport.

When to book your Galle transfer
The south-west coast has its dry season from December to April, with calmer seas, sunshine and the busiest hotels. Christmas and New Year fill up first, so book rooms and transfers early for those weeks.
From mid-May to September the south-west monsoon brings heavy showers to this side of the island, rougher seas and red flags on many beaches, although the rain often comes in bursts with sunny spells between. October and November, between the monsoons, can bring heavy afternoon and evening downpours. The expressways keep running in the rain, but allow a little extra time in a storm.
Every full-moon day is a Poya holiday, when the sale of alcohol is banned and some businesses close. Around the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April, many families travel home and the expressways are busier than usual.
Many international flights land overnight. A pickup at 2am puts you in Galle around dawn, in time to watch the light come up over the ramparts.
Private transfer vs other ways to reach Galle
| Option | Door to door | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 2h 20min – 3h | Straight to your door, fixed price per vehicle, driver waiting in arrivals. |
| Airport bus + expressway coach | 3½–4½ hours | A dedicated airport bus runs to the Makumbura Multimodal Centre at Kottawa, where expressway coaches leave for Galle. One change, limited luggage space, and check the timetable before a late-night arrival. |
| 187 bus + coastal train | 4½–6 hours | The 187 expressway bus runs to Colombo Fort, then the coastal line takes from about 2¼ hours to over 4 hours to Galle, depending on the train. Scenic, but often crowded, with a walk or tuk-tuk ride at each end. |
| Airport taxi counter | 2¼–3 hours | The official airport taxi service has counters in the arrival lobby and will take you to Galle. Fine if you have not booked, but you queue and arrange the trip after a long flight. |
| Uber or PickMe | 2¼–3 hours | Both apps serve the airport. Workable for light travellers, but you need mobile data the moment you land, and vans with room for families or surfboards are harder to find. |

Vehicles, prices and what's included
You pay one fixed price for the vehicle, not per seat, quoted for your date and group before you book. Tolls, fuel and parking are in the price, and so is waiting time: 60 minutes from your actual landing, or 15 minutes at a hotel or address pickup.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Couples and solo travellers |
| Executive sedan | Up to 3 passengers | 2–3 suitcases | Mercedes E-Class or similar |
| Minivan | Up to 7 passengers | 6–7 suitcases | Families and golf or ski bags |
| Minibus | 8–16 passengers | One suitcase each | Groups, weddings, events |
Exact models vary by local partner. Tell us about oversized luggage, golf bags, skis or strollers and we will size the vehicle to fit.
Not included: waiting beyond the free time, and stops or detours added on the day. Planned stops are fine: ask for them with your quote and they are priced in. Tipping is up to you.
Who the Galle transfer suits
Overnight arrivals
Flights landing between midnight and dawn are common at Katunayake. A driver waiting in the arrival lobby means no queue at the taxi counter at 3am and a sunrise arrival in Galle.
Families
One price for the vehicle, child seats on request (tell us the ages), and a minivan for up to seven people with luggage. Toilet and snack stops are never a problem.
Surfers and divers
Boards and dive bags fit in a minivan. Tell us what you are bringing and we will send a vehicle with room, whether you are heading to Hikkaduwa, Ahangama or Weligama.
Weddings and groups
Galle Fort and the south-coast villas are popular for weddings and celebrations. Minibuses carry 8 to 16 guests, and we can arrange cars for people landing on different flights.
Plan the rest of your Galle stay
- Apply for your Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) online before you fly. Rules differ by nationality, so check the official ETA site well before departure.
- Use an ATM or exchange counter in the arrival lobby. Tuk-tuks, small cafés and market stalls around Galle Fort usually expect cash in rupees.
- Walk the fort ramparts in the late afternoon, from the lighthouse at Point Utrecht Bastion round towards the clock tower. The sea views at sunset are the reason most people go.
- On Poya (full-moon) days alcohol is not sold and some bars and restaurants close. Check the date if you are planning a celebration dinner in the fort.
- For your flight home, leave Galle about 5½ hours before an international departure from Colombo, and allow more on weekday afternoons and holiday weekends.
- Touring further? We quote hotel-to-hotel legs to Kandy, Sigiriya and Ella. Coming from India, our Delhi to Agra transfer runs on the same fixed-price terms.
- Breaking the journey home with a Gulf stopover? We also meet flights in Dubai and Doha, with the same fixed price per vehicle and flight tracking.
