Sri Lanka is compact, but its roads are slow, and most beach and heritage towns are a long way from the airport. Colombo Airport is at Katunayake, north of the capital, while Galle, Unawatuna and the surf towns are on the far south-west coast and Kandy and Sigiriya lie inland.

Roads and expressways
Traffic in Sri Lanka drives on the left. Three expressways do most of the work for airport transfers: the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway from the airport, the Outer Circular Expressway around Colombo, and the Southern Expressway to Galle, Matara and Hambantota. All are toll roads, and tolls are included in your fixed price.
Off the expressways, the coast roads are busy with buses, tuk-tuks and village traffic, and distances take longer than the map suggests. Your driver knows where to leave the expressway for each beach town.
When to go
The island has two monsoons. From mid-May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain to Colombo, Galle and the south-west coast, while the east stays drier. From December to March the north-east monsoon wets the north and east, and the south-west coast has its dry, calm season. October and November, between the two, can be wet almost everywhere.
For Galle and the south coast, December to April is the main season.

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arriving, and the rules differ by nationality, so check the official ETA site before you fly. Banks, ATMs and mobile phone counters are in the arrival lobby at Colombo Airport.
