For most visitors, India begins at Delhi Airport, and the first big journey is to the Taj Mahal. Agra is 233 km away, about four hours by road, and the trains that cover the distance fastest leave from a station across the city rather than the airport. Traffic in India drives on the left. Many intercity routes are tolled highways and expressways, such as the six-lane Yamuna Expressway from Greater Noida to Agra, where the limit for cars is 100 km/h. Away from them, roads are shared with buses, trucks, motorbikes, auto-rickshaws and the occasional cow, and city traffic sets the pace at both ends of any trip.

That is why many visitors leave the driving to a local. Tolls, fuel and parking are included in your fixed price, and in winter fog your driver keeps to the reduced speed limits.

In the north, the main season runs from October to March, with warm, dry days. December and January bring fog in the mornings and at night, which can delay flights and slow the roads. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon arrives around July and lasts into September.

Most visitors need a visa, and many nationalities can apply online for an e-Visa through the official Indian government portal. Foreign nationals can also fill in the e-Arrival card online in the 72 hours before landing; it is arrival information, not a visa, and it speeds up immigration.
